In US news and current events today, a lion has been reunited with his human ‘mother’ in an attempt to save his deteriorating health.
Jupiter the lion was rescued from the circus as a newborn after his mother, who had been abused, gave birth. He was sent to a Colombian rescue for abused animals where he befriended the owner, Ana Julia Torres. In 2011, a video of them embracing went viral on the internet as their unlikely bond touched the hearts of people online. But in 2017, environmental agencies announced they would remove almost 200 animals from Torres’ shelter.
The agencies claimed Torres didn’t have the proper resources or documentation to care for many of the animals. And in 2019, Juptier was relocated to the Los Caimanes zoo. On February 20, Torres reportedly visited Jupiter at his new home only to find he had lost hundreds of pounds. Torres told reporters that she didn’t recognize the lion and that Jupiters’ condition has lead to liver and kidney damage.
The public joined in Torres’ worry after a video circulated of Jupiter looking malnourished & despondent. The Colombian Minister of Defence announced Jupiter would be moved back to Cali near Torres. On February 27, the 20-year-old lion was transferred back to California. The city is working to bring back his health.

This is what happens when you allow governments and their agencies to dictate what individuals can and can't do on their private property. It wasn't that she couldnt care for the animals, it was that she made those "Animal protection organizations" look bad. Think about it. This woman is doing what the government and animal agencies fail to do, yet the government will ask for taxes to "protect animals" and those other agencies will ask for "donations" yet the problem isnt solved. Exact thing happen in California where a man made tiny homes for the homeless and then the state took them away from the homeless.

This is such A great loss a huge sadness. He could have lived A long & healthy & happy life had they left him with his mama. Why didn’t they return him as soon as they noticed he wasn’t eating properly and was mourning the loss of his human mama. It’s not rocket science right ppl. You see him deteriorating quickly you step up and have him closely looked at. Although it was as plain as the nose on our faces what the problem was. Loneliness. Heartbroken , Sadness. He’s also rubbing his cheeks up on parts of the bars closest to her. That is how felines show affection to others because their cheeks have a special scent glad that allows them to identify you as a part of the pride. Eyesight is poor during the day so this helps them to identify each member of their pride successfully.

Those people should be accountable for what they did. It was so heart breaking to see the lion very skinny and couldnt even move to eat..I couldnt help but watch the first part again when the lion tried to embrace her..couldnt stop crying.

@@dianewilkins6269 when you build a true trusting and living bond no harm Will come your way unless it's by accident Had a wild cat come into my life for a few years and then move but kept tabs on her. After a time went back and was able to get her and she wasn't to happy about the cage. But it was only a to hour or so ride and a few hours she was free. At the end of her life after all most 20 years you wouldn't evel have believe she was once wild She found a loving home bult on trust over time.

I just saw an article stating that poor Jupiter has passed away. His Mum was visiting him again in the morning and the Vets were happy he was responding to his medicines and then later on she got a call and they told that he had sadly passed away. At least he responded to her and knew he was loved. Poor Jupiter.

It's amazing how animals remember when a person saves their life. You see it with lions, apes, dogs, cats etc. Someone rescues them and takes care of them...they will always remember that person and show their appreciation for what they did for them.

Let me get this straight. This lady took care of the lion with love, food, and shelter for 19 years. Then the government comes and takes him away, and within a year the lion is almost straved to death, on his death bed, and without the previous own stepping in the animal would have surely died. Now because of the government this majestic animal has kidney and liver problems. When will the world realize that we need less government in our world and more people like this lady. This is what happens when government thinks that they know best and how others should be treated. They should be a shamed of their sevles. And I hope people will start standing up to these people, and get them out of our lives.

I don't blame the government, which promptly acted to save the animal once his situation was known, but the scientific advisers and the zoo that accepted him in the first place. This is an extremely old male lion -- at 19, he's roughly speaking the equivalent of 90 in human terms -- and the advising scientists should have insisted that he not be moved into a zoo.

@@emp9413 I agree, I believe they took him out of the cage when they knew people were coming to either visit or get the lion. I also believe that they both did not feed the animal properly with proper nutrients as well as neglecting to feed the animal all together. That zoo completely abused that animal and should be boycotted completely and ALL animals should be taken away from that zoo permanently. This should not have happen to Jupiter. If they never took Jupiter away in the first place, the lion would still be alive and healthy. And even if and I say IF that animal got cancer while with his real mom, Jupiter would still have many years of joyous years of life...

I am just too disgusted with the so-called "responsible" people regarding this matter. On the first onset of Jupiter's deteriorating health, has anyone care that if that continues he might die in few weeks or months. He lost a lot of weight and he even developed health issues already. I am deeply disappointed with those people. I am so sorry Jupiter for that. I hope you will have a better life with your mom now. I hope no one will have some crazy ideas to transfer him to any place again.

Hosntly. The wildlife here in florida instead of putting money to handle certain invaisve species instead mad it illiagle so now people who cant qualify for a permit ( an educational facility permit) cant keep their animals and have to get them euthanized. What dose this do to stop the wild populations? Nothing, in fact some will get worse from people releasing their pets so they arent killed, and the fact that these invasive species here were collected for the pet trade. They are now illeagle to own in the state so now no one would be cautching them and they will grow. These wildlife agencies make some of the dumbest decisions involving animals

You don't seem to have all the facts. The lion was taken because he was sick and needed specialized treatment. His deterioration was due to liver cancer and anaemia which caused his death back in March.

Lions are social cats. They rely on their pride for their identity, support, love, and food. Torres was his pride...they took away his support and love making him unable to eat what they gave him. My heart broke seeing him lay there emaciated. May God give her the continued funding and a full recovery for her feline friend!
