Yes Eduardo his best solo ever for sure he did not compose it but made it his own with this recording !

C'mon, do not forget about Barney! Great solo! This man was inspired always.

Even if Willie Smith had only recorded this single solo, he would deserve being remembered. Imo, this belongs to the 5 or 6 best alto solos ever recorded. He has been my favorite altoist since I first heard this. Nobody - except Johnny Hodges - had such a fire, such a deeply emotional playing style.

I heard this tune for the first time by the end of 1958 on the radio station Voice of America, transmitter Tanger. Since then I have been searching for the buddies featuring that tune. Unfortunately I did'nt find any information i.e. who plays the alto, the guitar, the tenor, the piano and the trumpet. Do you have more information on this issue? Thanks.

Thank you for your comment. I did not say that Mr. Hampton was the original composer of "Stardust", any artist can have compositions/arrangements on any tune. Their is a big difference. Stardust is a standard and many artist's have recorded Hoagy Carmichael's song.. Lionel Hampton is one of the many artist's who have recorded this magnificent standard "Stardust". My first introduction to live jazz. Seeing the Lional Hampton Band when bands were travelling and taking their music around. It was a high school in Moncton New Brunswick , Canada. Hamp was the ultimate performer in those days. I was about 14 or 15 years old and we had driven a hundred miles to see this great band. At that time Hamp played the music as recorded on this album. I still love this form of jazz and continue to search it out. I'm 82 now and wishing for more of this type of jazz.

well then you'd have to rephrase it. It is a rendition, not a composition. And no, artist cannot have"compositions" of any tune.

One question Talbot, I remember hearing this song in my crib, my father played it a lot it was his favorite. The version he had and I still have was on a mono 33.3 RPM record, that I made still have? I knew where all the pops skips and noise was on the record. I was also given and played 78 RPM records when I got older, and this song is over 15 minutes, most 78's only played 5-6 minutes per side, and the longest 78 record ever made was almost 8 minutes by Frank Sinatra. Are you sure you have the 78 RPM version, or do you have to turn it over? Back in the in the 70's, I bought another 33 PRM version of this , and then the CD version in 1984 or '85 when jazz & classical CD's were produced more than rock and R&B disc.

Sorry rioleo8 just picked up your post on Google/Picasa ! Quite right Star Dust is mono33 with The Man I Love on side b.I had to dig out my old collection to check which has prompted me to dust off my record player to revive a few memories !!

Thanks Talbotvanman, I have the same one I believe, thanks for checking that out, I have the same one I believe from 1947 before I was born and the remake white jacket one shown on here. I've given away most of my vinyl collection when it was replaced with a comparable CD. I hate surface noise, ticks and pops. Plus most people alive today never played a record, and what stopped some of the playing of 78's were that the needle or stylus used were bigger than that of a 33/45 and or they stopped making players with that speed. I replaced and fixed many reversible needles, and when the 33/45 side stopped playing, they flipped over to the 78 side, and worst were the people who put coins on the arm to weigh it down. I myself used sewing needles or nails when the needles broke to play 78's my parents didn't want on some 78 rpm player I was given as a child that had no speakers. You put in the needles, and it had a large headed screw to hold the needles in place. I don't think I ever saw a 16 - 2/3 rpm record though, but I've seen that speed on some players.

The composition is a Hoagy Carmichael composition, written in 1927.

Hoagy Carmichael wrote it, and thousands of people have performed it. It's part of the standard jazz language now.
