Bought it on eBay. Made in the USA, in the 40's, by Lionel Corporation and used during the WWII years.
The J-38 type of CW/Morse keys were used by all branches of the US military. Were manufactured as part of the the war effort by a few specialized US companies. They manufactured them almost identical and sometimes it is hard to recognize the factory that produced that particular model.
Some of the companies were:
American Radio Hardware (ARH), Lionel Corporation, Telegraph Apparatus Corporation (TAC) and there were two more of unknown manufacture: One made entirely of brass including its frame and, the last one, made entirely of white metal including the frame.
They look all the same and parts are interchangeable between different manufacturers.
Very small differences that could give away the possible manufacturer are known.
The most easily type of J-38 CW keys to identify is the one made by the Lionel Corporation.
-Lionel had round corners in the Bakelite base of their keys. All others were sharp square.
-Lionel had a different angled knurling pattern on their lock nuts. All others had a normal straight vertical knurling pattern on their lock nuts.
-Lionel had the company name "Lionel Corporation" cast in between the trunnion supports. All others didn't have a company name written anywhere.
-Lionel painted their frames black. All others didn't paint them.
-Lionel had the Lionel logo cast in the bottom of the Bakelite base. All others didn't have any marks.
-Lionel installed position pins on all wire posts (rear and inner posts), to stop this posts from turning or getting loose during usage. All others had them only on the rear posts, the ones that are used for training. Lionel located their inner posts position pins in order to form a 45 degree angle.
All this extra features makes Lionel keys easy to spot and to be recognized.
Of all J-38s, Lionel seems to be the more common ones. They are recognized as being the ones with the best quality and attention to detail of all J-38s made.
After 70 years, thousands are still in use today in the hands of fellow Ham Radio CW Operators.
Lionel Corporation no longer produces this keys but the Company is well known and are still in operation. They manufacture Electric Toy Scale Train sets.Their toy products had set the standard in the USA for decades.
Got my Lionel J-38 CW key on eBay but it was incomplete (otherwise I could have not afforded it). Was missing the most important screw: The gap adjusting screw and it's corresponding lock nut.
The special fine threading is no longer common. You can find the Tap and Die (ordering from the USA) to make this threads but the special external knurling on the lock nut, was a different thing.
Jack Burks, K4CNW, a fellow member of the Straight Key Century Club, came to the rescue and, knowing that it was an impossible to find the obsolete screw in my country, looked around, found the parts and sent them to me. My key is again complete with all its parts and all are original from Lionel. Thank You Jack!
Hope you guys may like the video.
73's de Rob.

Roberto, This is the best J-38 video on RU-vid. Thanks for taking time to show and explain the details of this famous key. 73 John/W5CYF

Great Job. I have a no-name J-38, probably ARH with a Signal Corps stamp on the plastic base. The contacts are narrow(~1/16") and have a black coating on the circumference. I wonder if they are silver since the contact surfaces are white. My dad bought this for me at a thrift shop in the early '60s for $1.00! Unfortunately a lot of the various military keys in your collection are getting harder to find and a lot more expensive. Several years ago I bought three different Nye-Viking Speed-X keys. Glad I did since they are no longer in full production. I enjoy your videos, they are very informative.

Excellent. I just picked up a J-38 at a hamfest this summer and I wish I had it 40 years ago when I got started in ham radio! I used a Radio Shack "look-alike" straight key that worked fine for years but the J-38 sure feels better.

Hi, thanks for your words. I took it completely apart and cleaned it with soap and water. The key came in good condition, was dirty though. It was missing the most important screw, the one that sets the gap. Another ham heard I was looking for it and he sent it to me, Jack Burks, K4CNW. I am very grateful. You are doing good in Spanish: Dios le bendiga a usted tambien. Un abrazo. Rob.

Roberto ur english is excellent, ur key is in vry gd condition, the j38 comes with the large type contacts like yours and others came with a pencil lead thick contact.also some of the movable arms from some contracters had rough edges, i like the lionel the best although the ones made by j.h. bunnel co. were mostly copper and very nice.then later the japanese came out with the jj38.have fun. vry nice video.Tony

I just found an old, ugly, filthy J-47 key used by the Army Signal Corps. It is a J-37 key mounted on a Bakelite base. It took five hours of cleaning to get it to look good. I lubricated it to keep the bearings working smooth. I attached it to another formerly discarded piece of radio equipment, a Ranger RCI-2950. The old Ranger RCI-2950 had a 1992 date. It was completely nonfunctional also. I used parts from old televisions and radios to repair it. I got a contact on the Ranger early December 2014 using sideband mode. Now I am ready to make my first CW contact on my vintage straight key. I put the key together this morning and it is fully functional. I bought 18 metres of RG-8M from a thrift store. I cut a 1/4 wavelength of threaded rod for the ten metre band. The old radio now transmits approximately 55 watts PEP SSB, 12 Watts AM RMS, 12 watts FM, 20 watts CWL. I have not had any contacts on AM nor FM because those parts of the 10 metre band are out of my license class. Only dummy load tests for AM and FM have taken place because of my license limitations. I can still use CW with my limited license! The first CWL contact awaits! To think, I came within two hours of letting my license grace period expire when I found the junk Ranger. I will never be able to afford good equipment but I am having a great time repairing my old junk and getting on the air. --... ... -- -.. . -. ----. -. .. . --.

+Indrid Cold comment. Hope you were able to finish repairing your rig and I am happy to know you are having fun doing these repairs. I too can not afford new equipment so...All my rigs are like that... rescued from destruction and in poor condition but restored with lots of care tender love. You can see them in my QRZ page. They now work like just out from factory and look very nice too with original colors restored, etc. Congratulations!

Mr.Roberto, thanks for this excellent video. If I may ask, what did you use to clean the J-38? Radio looks very interesting and I am going to slowly buy some equipment and try it. Mi Espanol no es bueno, pero, Dios bendiga usted su famila?? Hope that is correct?

I just bought one of these at a yard sale. It came on a nice, vintage, wood base and the whole thing is intact and everything is where is should be. How much are these telegraphs usually worth? I'm knowledgeable on these things.

Roberto excellent video! Congrats! My son is doing a projet for Social Studies about Samuel Morse. I remembered I had picked up a morse key at a garage sale years ago.I went into my shop and found I hada a Lionel J-38! With all the correct markings! Mine came mounted on a board with a Bell System's buzzer. We are planning on connecting a 9v battery to power the buzzer. The key will be mounted on a wooden box with buzzer&battery hidden inside the box. Thanks again!

I know was years ago and I responded but not via reply :-( but mistakenly hit the new comment button and responded to you creating a new comment instead of replying directly to you. Sorry about that!

what is the silver box the key is connected to?

That is a CW Practice Oscillator used to do the demo so you could hear the CW being sent without really transmitting. This particular practice oscillator is homebrew. You can buy ready made on eBay: Just look for Morse Code practice oscillator.
