When William Webb Ellis took the ball with his hands and ran through the pitch at Rugby College the movement excited the audience creating the Rugby's football which, developed alongside with standard football. This created the need to formalize both sports having associations connected to them. By this time football divided in two, association football and Rugby Football. As young men use to slang Association football started be called of assoccer and rugby rugger. When Charles Wreford-Brown of oxford was asked which style he preferred the most he simply "in joke way" said: "I actually prefer going to a game of soccer”. And Soccer became the name of the sport informally. Arriving in the United States, Rugby football was already known as football and had bigger associations compared to Football (soccer), so the soccer name began to be used by Americans more often because of Name's right, couldn't have two sportive associations with the same name, and the Rugby/American football in its beginnings were older than footballs soccer associations. I hope this clarifies the reason why Americans call it soccer, it's not their invention.

got a lot more popular over the last decade or so. It is similar in popularity to hockey in the US. Depeding on what metric you look at, one will say hockey is more popular one will say soccer is more popular. Still nowhere near the big 3 sports tho. It's in sportwear shops for the local teams. Not sure if it's generational, seems like old and young like it similarly. MLS kinda ruined the tv thing for US viewers tho. Last several years games were on TV all the time, but this season all games are online, MLS pass or Apple TV or something. Will help things internationally but going to lose some US viewers I'd guess. Tho Messi might offset that, he definitely has people talking
