At 65, whenever I feel "I'm getting old", I remind myself what a privilege it has been to follow Messi's entire career. Too young to see England win the World Cup (I was 7 but my Dad was a rugby fan so I knew nothing about it!), but at 11 witnessed (all on TV of course) the glorious Brazilian team of 1970 beat Italy 4-1 in the final and Argentina win in 1978. Then of course all the pain of following England all these years , to the sensational Argentina victory in 2022 with Messi lifting the trophy. The whole debate about who is the GOAT has become tribal and meaningless especially when making comparisons over decades, but speaking personally, Messi for me is the one.
