Lionel Prewar 226E
Disassembly, Repair, and Assembly
When I received the engine, there was an internal short and the engine wouldn’t run. I took it apart to troubleshoot, clean, and repair the engine. Now it’s running like new!
Want to know how to take the 226E apart for service? This is your video!

Great episode! Thanks for detailing all the steps in case we as viewers want to fix our own! I’ve had good success with postwar. It looks like much of this especially running gear resembles the 1666. I had to replace all of it off EBay on a 1 owner 1666 that lost the rods etc. I always learn something new on here!
@dagryffynhobby
@dagryffynhobby 2 года назад
Thank you! Many engines, both pre and postwar, even MPC era, are very similar. There are usually variations but they are mostly the same which makes fixing them much easier. The 1666 is a great engine too. It was made both pre and postwar, so it’s a similar age as the 226e. Very solid engines.

Great video!! I remember seeing a 226e on a table for sale during the Dulles Train Show last year, I unfortunately didn’t secure it. The 226e is an engine I’ve longed to own, but someday I’ll get one. A good alternative for the 226e is also the 225e. It’s a great engine that also uses the same tender(2235w or 2224w) as the 226e(2226w) just with a 4 wheeled chassis. In short, the 225e is essentially the 226e’s little brother.
@dagryffynhobby
@dagryffynhobby Месяц назад
Thanks. The 225 is a fabulous engine too. I’ve had a few, I currently have two in parts that I need to kit back together. The 226 is just such a classic, so many engines came from that boiler casting

As I watch you rather.expertly, disassemble and reassemble these fine pieces of the toy makers art (they were after all toys), I wonder how many 224's, 225's, and 226's rolled out of Lionel, and how many still exist! Those of us privileged to have them, I think have a special responsibility to preserve them!

Outstanding Dave! If I ever get my hands on a 226E, or even a plain 226 I'll know just what to do. And I had NO idea there was a weight in the boiler shell! No wonder that 226E I handled a few years ago was so heavy! It should be a great puller! Thanks again!

Thanks! It’s a great engine and the basis for many to come after it. It is definitely a heavy engine and pulls and runs very well. I kept adding cars last night until I got wheel slip, somewhere around 32 cars. Not bad at all!

Great video, Dave. You are so lucky to have the 226E. Other than the scale Hudson, it was Lionel's best prewar steamer. It was also the basis for the postwar Berkshire. Thanks again for sharing. I also appreciated the way you ran your soldering iron over the shrink tubing.

Dave I've been waiting for this video! That is my favorite locomotive that I own. Its in a class by itself. Yours looks really nice. Looks like you fixed the issues with it. E units runs great. Great idea to use shrink tube to stop the exposed wire from shorting. Wow it really looks great on your layout. The firebox glow looks so cool, especially when you run it in the dark. Im so glad you got one. Well worth the money. Now its time for your 225e and the 226e to run side by side on the mainlines!

If the E-unit keeps going into neutral my experience has shown that the E-unit is not at falt. The problem is with the collector continuity. The solution is to replace the collector to eliminate any possible break in continuity. Alternately the E-unit can be connected to the tender whistle relay using the tender collectors as an additional source of power.
@dagryffynhobby
@dagryffynhobby 2 года назад
The e unit is in fact fine. Cleaning the rollers fixed the issue. I’ve been running it without issue. I did set up a different engine to use the tenders pickup rollers also and it worked really well and even ran better. I’ve been tempted to do it to all my engines.

I have to admit that the 2224W looks a lot better than the tender it came with when you purchased it. Thanks for the shrink tube tips instead of completely rewiring it. That will be helpful in my projects. Wish there was more run time in the video, but I have a feeling that we'll be seeing more of this engine in the future. I see more prewar rolling stock purchases in your future. Hope we aren't fighting over them at the Allentown show this weekend. lol. Great video as always.

Oh, there will be more runtime! The tender is from my 225e. Since the one that came with this one needs help, I may re-letter it. I promise not to fight you over any cars, I’ll probably only have $20 in my pocket anyway! Lol.
