That bassist is absolutely gettin' it this entire song. It's a crime against all that is civil that you only catch glimpses of him in the shadows but such is the fate of playing bass
The greatest outtro guitar solo by Steve Lukather was untouchable as a piece of improvised tonelicious lickery - I claim it to be the greatest guitar solo of that decade - and there were so many - But Steve stole the stage for all time with his solo … and I will fight any man, woman or child who says differently.
I attended his 1984 Tour concert in Little Rock, AR. Big difference! He was dressed to the 10's and had a runway over the crowd and a beautiful woman waiting at the end. They danced on the runway! What a concert!
Cats in the 80's knew MJ, Prince, Madonna, but how come you not put one of the most prolific writer, musician.....in music history along with them. Lionel was the shiznit!!!
The 80s where such a great song to relax too who else agree this guy is a legend people had jobs knew were they stand in life and also we had great music with a better sense of how great life was before this virus
I just saw Lionel at the Wynn -Las Vegas & he opened with this song. His concert is the best I’ve seen! From ballads to Commodores hits to pyrotechnics, this iconic songwriter is the whole package ❤️🎶.
As much as I admire Carlos Rios as guitarist (Gino Vanelli "Brother to Brother" & Chick Corea Elektric Band "Cool Weasel Boogie") that solo Luke did as a warm up (unsuspecting) was a one in a million. Ironically Carlos was rythym guitarist on this very cut
We cover a song, in church, called Excess Love, by Mercy Chinwo. At the beginning, our guitar player plays a "Carlos Rios-style" rhythm guitar lick, similar to the one Rios played on the Running With the Night record.
I heard that Steve was just playing some lead, messing around in the studio and just warming up. When he finished he told them "Okay, I'm ready to try the guitar solo." and Lionel (or someone in the studio) said "It's done already. We recorded your warm up". Not those exact words, but close.
He had been checking the harmonies around and just had been trying a solo over the keys of the song. And then he told them that he had been ready for the take. Then they told him, that it has been recorded on the tape and it's done.
When I bought my first pick up truck in 1985 this was me and all of my friends theme song when we running the streets at night and we called ourselves the mini truckers because we all had mini trucks
When I was very young, I would watch this on VHS all the time. The 1st 4 music videos would be ALL NIGHT LONG, RUNNING WITH THE NIGHT, HELLO & PENNY LOVER. Followed up by 2 concert performances, RUNNING WITH THE NIGHT(this) & ALL NIGHT LONG.
For all those getting it wrong, or asking the question without allowing a reply - yes Steve Lukather is responsible for the amazing guitar solo for this song. LR asked him to do a solo. Luke went into the studio, warming up or "noodling about" as he says, and he said "Ok, I think I got it". And they said "That's it, thanks, we got it". So a "zero take wonder" on this one! lol
Cathy Bedwell....I don't think anybodys getting it wrong about who the original guitarist was, and I don't understand what you mean when you say they won't allow you to reply?
@@HypePerformanceGroup Hey dudes..What do ya think Lionel can pack Steve Lukather with him on every tour?? Only Steve could pull off that solo and he's got his own band and projects.
Who's on drums? The beginning fill is awesome? I'll take a guess and say Gerry Brown (Stanley Clarke's drummer!), who's known for twirling sticks and keeping a great groove!
Bart Smith Basically the license of the time this came out ran out for the HD remakes of recently, so if they wanted to put it in the newer versions like on PS4 they would have to get the rights for the song again, for a remaster I don't think it was worth the trouble, same thing happened to MJ - Billie Jean sadly :(
Great song but what makes the studio version of this song stand out is the fantastic guitar solo .... Jeeez this live version is such a fikkin let down ... Come on Lionel where did that guitarist come from ????
English Countryside I think what Quinnysings is saying is "where did that guitarist, as in the one in this live performance, come from" In other words, "sort it out Lionel! you really should've got Steve up for this one!"
I TOTLALLY AGREE!!! THE SONG IS GREAT BUT THE GUITAR SOLO IS WHAT REALLY MAKES THE SONG!!!! DOES ANYONE KNOW WHO THE ORIGINAL GUITARIST ON THIS SONG WAS?????????????????????????
Great live performance, but the main reason I clicked on this video was to hear the guitar solo. I was hoping for the guitarist to "wail", but he never really did any high notes. Kind of a let down, but otherwise, an enjoyable performance.
I agree, awful attempt! Mind you no one could do it as good as Luke! I read that Luke did the studio cut in 2 takes, once to get the feel, second one was a goer for the album!
