Liquid pigments - what are they? A "must" for terrain painters?

I was intrigued and curious of the liquid pigments from Green Stuff World. I do not regularly do "product reviews" but I want to share my first experiences with this paint beacause some of the results more than excited me - (a bit of a spoiler) - I really think this paint is a great asset when painting terrain. Also, just so that you know, I bought these paints at my local friendly game store and GSW are not sponsoring this video. It's my honest opinions.
Also if you have been following my work, this video shows my finished orc settlement!

As Jon Scott says, I've been doing this for years. Pigment powders have to be fixed and there's a liquid for that purpose. I usually mix a couple of pigment powders with say, 5+ parts of water then add a drop of binder so it gets stuck in whatever surface I apply my pigment juice. I also add a drop of floor wax to break water's surface tension so it goes straight into the recesses. Surface tension is also to be blamed for drying rings (water drop's edge is like a wall where pigments are dragged into). This juice gives a natural dusty effect, tones down highlights, brings brown into rocks' crevices etc. Pure magic. And that's what liquid pigments are. Powders with lots of water and just a tiny bit of binder. That's why they separate so easily inside the bottle. The already have stainless steel balls inside so worry not. GSW mindset is to have products that give decent results by themselves, with ease of use, where having fun while working with the product is part of the process. I believe they include some retarder in the formula, as you have plenty of time to work and move them arround before they get dry. TBH got the 3 sets but have only tried the exact same thing you did: an oxide wasteland base. The urge to buy / bike rush part was hilarious 🤓 I've had that feeling before. The see through feature as you say is a bonus too. No matter you painted the roofs turquoise and then covered up: it wasn't a waste as the blue still shows and gives the roof chromatic richness. You should try these over texture paints. Vallejo has dry rust, a deep brown red with grain on it, much like games workshop typhus corrosion. GSW also sells crackle paint like dried up mud, liquid pigments really go well over that. Dunno what else to add... Writing thru my 2nd watch. White dust is a good thing to have in the recesses of red brick walls. Remember you can add dish soap or floor wax to increase the flow. Thru airbrush they give an uniform dust coating. That's great for war theatres where ruins, ruble and wrecked cars are coated by a thin white powder. AFAIK they do not reactivate like oils or enamel, maybe rubbing alcohol over a thin airbrushed layer. Best way to remove it is waiting halfway its drying time then whipping off the excess while still wet. I think that pretty much covers my thoughts and people's doubts. As always, it's my personal experience and yours may vary depending on weather, application, product batches... Excellent video, thanks for keeping this great stuff coming 👍

Javier, thanks. From now on I should have you on speed dial whenever I screw stuff up :) It's cool that you guys have been using this technique for some time. And I'm glad GSW has put it in a bottle. In essence I really like experimenting and trying out to mix different things... but if I would spend time on that and make videos att the same time. Then I would need to be getting paid :) I think the dish soap / floor wax for increased flow was one of the best tips. That is definitely something I will take with me. Over all I just really enjoyed how these paints worked out in specific situations, mainly bases and terrain. Everything just looks natural and it was a fast process to get good results. Oh - and crackle paint. Its my dearest friend. I use it on way to many things :) Thanks for being so engaging Javier. I very much appreciate it.

That ork village is straight out of world of warcraft, brought back very old memories! The floor finishes folks are adding are pretty much cheap acrylic medium and great for terrain jobs and big projects. To break the surface tension I'd prefer a bit of flow improver, there is a good bitt of something similar included in these floorshines to make them spread easily over old polish, but I like the control of adding just as much as I want. Whenever paint beads up with surface tension and it's not a clever look you're trying - flow improver...

I'm glad you found your way over, it was a very nice thing of Dana to recommend my channel like that. These liquid pigments are a fun thing, I use them almost every time I paint. Compared to dry pigments... you don't get the same "dusty" feel... almost if you have access to an airbrush. But they very much dry with a similar grainy texture - something I can't get from anything else. For some reason I find they also work very well for dry brushing, as long as one really dry the brush of with intent.

Glad to see you did a video on these. From my messing about with them, when rusting up small things like weapons and armor, i got a better effect by not thinning them down at all. I'm not sure but I get the feeling these may act a bit like some weathering liquids that I have previously bought from a company called Flory Models. On your large tent test piece I would encourage you to see what happens if you use a dry and then slightly damp kitchen tissue... If this product is what I think, then it should reactivate and pull away the pigment. This would open up a wider range of uses such as weathering recesses and pin washing or streaking etc. I'm interested to know if this is what I think it might be
@52Miniatures
@52Miniatures 4 года назад
Hey! Well, I don't know. But I'll give it a try. Can you explain the process a bit more? First paint on the paint - then let dry? - then dry and rub a bit of with a soaked kitchen tissue?
@oinked
@oinked 4 года назад
@@52Miniatures yes, let it fully dry. Then manipulate with a tissue to pull away the remaining residue. The more damp the tissue the more residue would be cleaned away. At least, that's how the product from Flory Models works, which is essentially a pigment dust suspended in water, which when dry leaves the pigment as the water evaporates away. this seems like the same thing which would open up lots of other uses and techniques etc.
@52Miniatures

Welcome to the channel Erik. No, think of the liquid pigments like a "regular" paint, only that when they dries they have a pigment like texture. Especially when you build it up with multiple layers. Dry pigments I "fasten in place" with white spirit and in the end varnish, otherwise it will rub off when handled.

@52Miniatures
@52Miniatures 4 года назад
My main thought on the dilution was to be able to build it up in layers. And I’m always a bit of a diluter... and on the big orc settlement I wanted to make sure the zenithal was shining through and for the paint to last. On much of the rusty metal I used it undiluted. Works fine as well. It’s a bit of an experimentation game with these :)
@zamo9660
@zamo9660 4 года назад
Dilution gives you control: application as it's in the bottle can be a bit harsh as you dropping a lot of pigment in one go. If doing so I'd suggest having a second brush clean at hand so you can feather the edges with the damp brush.

do they come off easily like the normal pigments? it looks like they dont, so maybe u can work with them in a early stage of painting with not varnishing after useing pigments
@52Miniatures
@52Miniatures 4 года назад
No they stick on there like a normal acrylic paint would. What I did was basicly paint with them first on top of the zenithal prime. Something that worked out well becase the zenithal prime adds a bit of depth. Then i can paint detals or drybrush on top with normal acrylics. You wouldn't have to varnish on top if you dont like to - (I always do to protect minis from tabletop useage.)

I wonder how this thing will behave when diluted with white spirits... I grabbed these on GSW’s summer sale, but they have not arrived yet. I love the look of your video overall, I’m assuming it’s some video settings to give the footage this warm, soft, earthy look? Curious how it’s done, if you would humour me.
@52Miniatures
@52Miniatures 4 года назад
Just because I’m curious, why do you want to mix them with white spirit? I hope you like the pigments when they arrive, I’ve been using them a lot to be honest. Now I have all three sets 😬 Regarding the video, all the footage of me is graded to hell and back... so lots of “filtering going on”. Everything of the minis or actual pieces of terrain and such I don’t really edit at all. I try and just get a propper white balance and that’s it. I don’t want to be “lying” and making stuff look any more different than they actually are. I do have a rather fancy camera though. Usually a “better” camera handles colors a bit better..
@SinOfAugust
@SinOfAugust 4 года назад
52 Miniatures - Me too :) I got two expensive cameras. Used to do professional photography for antique collectors. Only static shots though, video was never my thing. Why white spirits? Looking at how your diluted mix was behaving, there was definitely water surface tension issue happening. White spirits have minimal surface tension, so it would alter behaviour of this mix quite a bit. I changed my mind though. Probably not the best idea if liquid pigment is water diluted already. Better just to add few drops of flow improver to regain control over this solution.
@52Miniatures
@52Miniatures 4 года назад
Ah yeah! I get it. Yes, I’ve been recommended a tiny amount of dishwashing liquid (not machine wash, the regular kind) or floor wax. Don’t ask me any details about the floor wax :) got no idea there... the dishwashing liquid I can definitely relate to. Airbrush flow improved should do the trick as well right?
@SinOfAugust
@SinOfAugust 4 года назад
@@52Miniatures To my knowledge, most Airbrush solutions are designed to prevent paint from drying on the needle, rather than to reduce surface tension. There may be airbrush flow improvers, but I've never seen one personally.
