To be fair, the essence of kpop is Korean. Fun fact, the vocal style know as rap, particularly when combined with dance in single performance, is 100% Korean in origin. Yes, I said rap. As this style of lyric delivery originated in Korea over 1000 years ago via their traveling storytellers. Whom used dance and a rap cadence of vocals to deliver their stories. This is where the origin of kpop is, this is why they rap... not because of black culture in the US, whom only started to use rap in the last century. They popularized rap, but I'm sorry, the black community did not technically "invent" it, and neither are they the ones who "influenced" them to use it. However they were inspired by the ways in which they use it now, the nuances surrounding the art. Which of course is a good thing, when you popularize something, that literally means you ensured YOUR way of doing it is the one that becomes associated with it. People like it, so kpop was smart about it, because kpop and hiphop developed more or less along side ane another, kpop made itself more approachable to the west by being culturally appreciative and adapting, by being open to other cultures in country that is not known to do such things. I will never understand the mindset of the black community, it is a compliment, it a good thing that kpop has done. Culture is MEANT to be shared, that is the purpose of creating something that you want your people to partake in, you thing it's an aspect of existence that makes life better, and one should naturally want others to see that too and want to adopt it onto themselves. That had been the way of culture for thousands of years. So why all of a sudden is there a culture so he'll bent on self segregation to the point of even laying claim to things that were naturally developed in other countries long before they were even naturally developed in the black community (rap), or at the very least, long before a claim was made to said cultural aspect and long before said cultures ever crossed paths (such as specific types of braids) which at the very least are automatically grandfathered in, giving them the same claim to that particular aspect as well. If not completely removing the right to even lay a claim to it in regards to the general public. Specially if those other culture chooses to share it with others. (Which is exactly what they've done when it came to the braids.) My point is, appropriation is, by definition, the taking of something culturally unique and making a profit off of if without permission and without reparations. (A perfect example or appropriation is the selling of Native American Dreamcatchers by non natives.) This is in no way the same. In fact, what we have seen here is all either appreciation, or straight up wrongful claims to what is actually culturally shared aspects in the first place.
