I would say “exploring a contradiction in a person’s testimony” to put it politely. Literally it is a long saw with a handle at both ends that moves back and forth, used by two people at once. Two people, in this case means, two opposing facts or pressures, that she (the witness) has to reconcile.

Says the CDC and most people paying attention over the past few decades. Opioid deaths in the US have spiked since the late 2000s, clocking just over 80,000 in 2021. Plus, with the proliferation of pill mills in Appalachia and generally in states with lax laws on the issue, these trends have show a clear correlation towards sales campaigns by pharmaceutical giants like Mallinckrodt and Purdue.

I know, that was an "object to form" question at least. And the witness should have said, "I don't know how to answer that." And if the attorney says, "What don't you understand?" say "How do you define 'opioid epidemic'?" Then when he gives statistics on deaths, etc., then answer whether or not you were aware of those many deaths or whatever. I mean "epidemic" is defined as the spread of an infectious disease, not people choosing to put drugs in their bodies. Factual only, no ambiguities. It's basic witness self-protection strategy in depositions. You might end up giving away the same information, but much less likely to say it in a way the other party can use it against you more effectively.
