Lisa is Homeless in Venice Beach, California. Rats Run Into the Bushes During This Interview.

While walking around handing out socks to new homeless friends, I started to talk to a woman who was sitting on the sidewalk. Her name is Lisa, and she is homeless in Venice Beach, California. I don't exactly remember the conversation, but at one point Lisa says to me all excited "we were on Dateline together." HOLY WOW she was right!
A few months prior, Dateline NBC produced a show about homelessness in Los Angeles. I may be a little biased because Dateline featured Invisible People, but I think Dateline produced one of the best shows on the topic I have ever seen. You can watch the full City of Angeles episode here: www.nbcnews.co...
I think the world of Lisa. After we first met, we connected a little bit before this interview. While walking down Venice Beach Boardwalk, almost every vendor and homeless person said hello to her. She is a kind and loving person. Liked by many. Lisa is also the type of individual I envision when I think of Venice Beach culture.
Venice Beach is one of the most wonderful and unique places I have ever visited. Being an old hippie myself, I find the bohemian lifestyle romantic. People are drawn to Venice for many different reasons these days but many are drawn by the lure of a carefree life and freedoms to express themselves as individuals. Venice Beach is known for healers, mystics, psychics, artists, and musicians.
Lisa is a gifted natural health professional, a healer! She has a master's degree in Acupuncture/Ancient Asian Medicine and is a Certified Bach Flower Therapist. You can find her blog here: theflowerchildb...
Lisa also doesn't want to be homeless. The good news is Lisa is connected to support services that are helping her get off the streets. I cannot imagine the pain and suffering Lisa has experienced living on the streets of Los Angeles. In the middle of this interview, if you watch close enough, you'll see rats running in and out of the bushes. NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO SLEEP ON A SIDEWALK NEXT TO RATS!

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as RU-vid, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

To everyone that’s commenting that Lisa may have mental challenges - WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENS TO PEOPLE LIVING ON THE STREETS HOMELESS? The longer someone is outside, the more their mental state deteriorates! STOP FOR A SECOND AND THINK ABOUT WHAT THIS WOMAN HAS HAD TO DO TO SURVIVE! A woman living on the streets face a huge risk of being abused! It’s a miracle she is still kind and loving! Having to live in her shoes, I’m not sure any of us would be so nice after years on the streets! Oh, and don’t forget, the longer someone is outside and the more their mental state deteriorates, THE MORE TAXPAYERS PAY for the cost of support services. If you want to know who is nuts or crazy or whacked - it’s us for allowing people to sleep outside. It’s us for not working to end the affordable housing crisis. It’s us for paying huge taxpayer money to maintain homelessness.

I absolutely agree with Mark affordable housing is cheaper than temporarily housing people. If the federal government would build some affordable housing. It would save the taxpayers mega bucks. I just watched a video about a homeless camp in New Jersey. That's was a point they were making. Building affordable housing or housing people is much cheaper in the long run. I bet if the majority of taxpayers were actually aware of the difference in cost. That they would demand affordable housing for the homeless.

Homelessness is EVERYWHERE. I'm from the south and I've seen it more and more amongst my generation (I'm a millennial) and the elderly. It's no laughing matter. Be careful how you treat people because you could be one paycheck, or catastrophe away from losing EVERYTHING. I'm just blessed to eat and sleep everyday. Please count your blessings. Thanks for the coverage on this on-going problem.

Nonsense. These people deserve every bit of contempt they attract. Born into endless opportunity and safety in the First World, and they do this. Save your compassion for clean living and hard working Third Worlders who have no choice. Further, no responsible and decent First Worlder is one pay cheque away from homelessness.

@@DP-jy2ge assuming you are employed (or self-employed), I hope you don't EVER receive a "pink" slip, or lose business in your line of work. NO ONE is exempt from it. Not even the well-to-do folks. Even so, I hope you are in good health as well. Health care cost are rising, and many folks have some jobs just for the coverage. My hope for any "hard-working" person is that they are physically-able to work and provide for themselves (and loved ones). I was homeless at one time, so I know how it feels. Regardless of how you feel about homelessness, my point is just be grateful for what you do have because it could be you in one of these videos. That's all. No matter your walk of life. Have a blessed day.

I lived in West Hollywood from 2009-2011. Back then, I had a three bedroom house in the hills near Sunset Plaza that was $2700/month. It was a 70s style house and very dated in every sense of the word, but it was in an ideal area for my work and I had my sister and creative partner living there as well. A year ago, I looked the house up to see what the rent was like now, because I’d been hearing from many how LA had really gone downhill since I’d moved. To be honest, it was scary even when I had lived there. Never saw so much crime, arrests in public and mentally ill people on the streets, in my life, until I’d lived there. When I saw today’s rent there, I almost fell off my chair. That very same house, which hasn’t been updated since, now costs a staggering $5k/month. But such inflation is not just destroying people in LA, it’s also happening here in NYC, where I am now. If it wasn’t for my husband, I’d been homeless by now. Before I moved to LA, I had an apartment that rented for $2100/month. That place is also going for $4k/month now. Who can afford $4-$5k/month just for a decent roof over their head? It’s not just in NYC or LA either.. in the suburbs and decent house starts there. I rented a place for $2k/month and it was a shoebox of a bungalow that was falling apart, in every sense of the word. To the point where my foot went through the floor because it was so bad. Then add on things like health insurance, car insurance, and so on. And we wonder why there’s so much homelessness? Congratulations once again Mark on yet another extremely empathic interview with this lovely young lady on her 51st birthday in Venice Beach ... I love the way you aren’t impatient about squeezing absolutely categorically relevant information out of all of the people you interview; you are patient & recognise their need to tell their stories in their own ways & if they lose track of where they were going along the way because there are so many conflicting elements & often traumatic experiences tied up in their story package, you just gently sympathise with them & encourage them along to the conclusion of their story no matter how confusing it may appear to be at times. These are all very real, lovelypepe who have taken some really hard knocks in their lives and your kindness & patience with them is highly commendable and makes your program a real joy to watch. I am from coastal Australia with a population of 70,000 people in a radius of just on 100 miles so I don’t get to see this kind of homelessness like you have in the USA, I am a 70yo aged pensioner ... we are lucky enough to receive $944 AUD per fortnight as well as gas, electricity, fuel & rail & bus subsidies from the government and also an Aged Care managed subsidy of $1,350 per month to be spent on services & facilities which make it easier for us to remain in our own homes like cleaners, gardeners, personal care nurses for showering & administering medications, supplying remote controlled hospital beds, raised toilet seas, shower seats, home emergency alarm necklaces & nutritional meals cooked 3 times daily if you want them ... and community bus trips twice monthly to various lovely nurseries & coffee houses in our area or to the movies. I now bless my lucky stars that my parents migrated to Australia from the Uk in 1955 when they did in fact have the option to take their 3 young children to the US back then. I pray for all of your homeless & pray that your exposê’s ultimately hit a raw spot with your Government & they will do something concrete to get all of these wonderful people off the streets. Kind regards ... JilB🐝✨🧓🏻✨

maria lozo It does not. If the system created homelessness, we'd all be homeless. People do it to themselves ... 100%. The only exceptions being teens aging out of foster care (though even they can find work and share with friends, if they're clean and decent). And tax dolkars should NEVER go to housing for these wastrels. Not when our public education and public hospitals need money. Not ever, in fact. It's outrageously immoral to spend money on people who have chosen to be irresponsible addicts.

G-d bless you and i love you too Lisa!!! I have a whole lot of compassion for homeless people! This is why, as i always have food in my car, i always give it out to the homeless. If i am able to, i sit down and talk with them about anything in an attempt to drive out the loneliness they experience along with the horribly rude people which pass by them sometimes yelling and spitting. That's awesome that you found housing for yourself within the near future!!! However, i would greatly about getting on a greyhound bus and relocating to another state where cost of living and pay is much better. As you said, California is so overloaded with homeless people that the odds of anything really getting much better is slim. At least in the state of Arizona, there are a lot of low-paying jobs available. Also, throughout the state of Arizona, Proposition 206 keeps a minimum wage of $11/hr ($12/hr in january, 2012) which goes quite a bit further than it does in California due to the AZ economy. It also allows for mandatory sick & vacation days within Proposition 206. So please about relocating!!! G-d be with you!!! Jeffrey Taylor

I'm Disabled, a Veteran, and have been homeless for two years. I'm not a drug addict, just lost my housing two years ago when the Apartment Complex I was living at was sold to a buyer in Toronto, who promptly notified the tenants living with Section 8 or VASH assistance was given the option to move out or pay full market value rent. I found while looking for a place to move to, that most low income housing was eliminated in this same fashion by greedy investors. I bought an old van on payments and was forced to start living in it. I did so for a year and was offered a tiny fiberglass trailer on payments. I found that the person I bought it from had mislead me on a clear title, and have had difficulty getting it registered and legal to tow. I have been stranded at a Recreation Area, above Kingman Arizona for seven months now trying to get repairs done to my van. It is no longer safe to drive, and definitely not suitable to tow my trailer. It has been a living hell, upto 128 degrees at times this summer, now dealing with freezing cold at night and heavy winds. Every time I try to get some repairs made, something comes up. I bought a used generator which failed in a couple weeks, had to buy another one, then my emotional support dog Archie was badly bitten and required veterinary care, my air conditioning compressor failed in my Van, I cut my knuckle to the bone and ligaments on some glass discarding some trash which resulted in an Emergency Room Visit. I have been trying to get help, and have not much success. I was accepted for Rapid Rehousing through the Catholic Charities, but have searched all over Mohave County but found I cannot afford an apartment on my disability income. I am now in a panic as I was notified by the Catholic Charities Caseworker handling my information, had their computer stolen and now my personal information has been compromised. I am on a waiting list for Section 8, basically started over. I did not choose to be in this homeless situation, and have been doing my best to deal with everything I have experienced the past 2 years. I had to literally give everything I owned away when I lost my apartment EVERYTHING!, I did try and keep my many tools, but those to were lost by a "friend" who was going but keep them until I get settled, but would never respond to my calls or texts. I am absolutely sick of my life. I don't live anymore, I merely exist, and it's not much of an existence. I have not showered in nearly 8 months, and haven't bathed in over two years since losing my apartment. I have reached out to every VA organization or service center for help, but am ineligible. I served 6 years in The Air National Guard, and was honorably discharged, but still don't meet the requirements as I was on active duty for well over a year with Avionics Technical School, and was activated during Desert Storm, but could not deploy with my unit, as I was a 3 level technician straight out of school. I have no family for support, no friends, only a few people I have met while being homeless. I have had a fellow vet brings some water bottles and food items several months back, but I don't see how I can ever get out of my situation as my limited income doesn't suffice.

St. Joseph's is a Catholic charity org. I am proudly Catholic. If I may say, the Catholic Church has the largest and the most number of charity organizations under its wing that are feeding, sheltering , counselling and ministering to all who needs help over the world.

That’s partly because they are the richest church organization in the world. They have the most money to help.

What a lovely woman, I hope she stays safe and gets housed soon. I’d love to see a follow up when she gets a home. Best wishes from Ireland 🇮🇪
