Every time I see this performance I always think to myself “one of them black folks in that band told her to specifically do that dance”..she was grooving tho
I was about 3 years my mom and dad we re married at the time and just bought the house I live in to this day I remember they used to keep this song on repeat in fall of 89 and the music video used to play on black entertainment television
@@POPJack1717 If I grammatically correct your sentence may I have the honor of a BBQ invite?! ( the correct answer is “for all intents and purposes”.).
+ERICA QUEEN That is absolutely clear from 3:18 and on, anyone who says different is clueless. She was feeding off the crowd like crazy from that point on.
When the crowd started chanting, ‘Go, Lisa! Go, Lisa!’ - I actually got goosebumps. It must feel incredible to have the approval of one of the most discerning audiences in the world.
No social media either not even twerking that's what these today's young people in this so called generation don't know nothing bout this old sckool music
@@lifeofneacy3891 Imma need ya to stop listening to music stations, and apply yourself on a music app. Spotify, ITunes, something. If you think music has gone bad, you not where it's really heard
***** Loose Ends was the first UK R&B act to have a #1 R&B hit in the States with _Hangin' on a String_. The UK's R&B talent is more soulful by the decade.
Good Morning So did Mines. In fact many people in the projects and the hood blasted this song. Many people who had bar-b-ques and house parties played this song towards the end of their events.
So True...when it came out it was on every radio station and playing in every other car that drove by for over three months. It was The number 1 jam that summer😅 of 1989. Barbecues n picnics , Block parties and Clubs this was The Jam !
Throughout history, the Brits had always had a thing for soul music, most notably Northern Soul. And as evidenced here, and much like Teena Marie before her, Lisa's music then and now crosses all boundaries of pop, soul and R&B. This performance at the Apollo was legendary. The black community (and of course, the gays) embraced her groove way before the mainstream crossover audience did. Personally speaking, when I first heard this track, I myself thought she was black (I thought the same when I first heard Madonna's "Holiday). Then the music video came out and I was both stunned, enchanted and HOOKED! Lady Stansfield ruled, and still does today.
This still gives me goosebumps every single time. The Apollo crowd---tough as they are--loved, loved, loved Lisa. They loved seeing her on that stage, they love the song. And probably even more so, they love her album AFFECTION. If you haven't yet heard the album in its entirety, baby, you are missing out. That album is the BOMB!
my first day trip from kingston ny to nyc was just after the 'affection' album was released and i walked into the mcdonald's on broadway in the east village. the entire staff was black and they were playing the album over the loudspeakers and everyone was singing along and dancing to every song. my friends and i (all white) were also playing the album nonstop at the time and joined in, as we ate. it was an awesome experience that i will never forget.
I saw it when originally aired and they LOVED her!!! I don't think the audience stood up like that for too many people and when they stand up and go ham for you like that ..... you are on your way to a loyal fan base.
You could tell that the amount of love and how hype the crowd was took her by surprised a little. She could tell and in turn she gave them an A+ performance! it was a beautiful thing to watch.
it looked like she wanted to do a couple of more lines acapella at the end of the song, but the crowd went nuts and she just ended it ...what an insane connection between an artist and the audience .... and she not only sounded great, but looked cool as shit ..... no sleaze, just pure class, style, and natural beauty on display .... great also seeing Sinbad come out like "Holy shit, wtf just happened"
Hi Vinny, Lisa was fab, have you seen her sing this song with Barry White, it's the top's, I live in the North of England too, & l am white but love soul music 🎶 too, but really Vinny why use bad language? 🌿 🐦 🌸 🌿 🐦 🌸 🌿 Sending Lot's of love from Great Britain 🇬🇧
@@annemccabe1714 yes you are super sensitive ... stress yourself out over more important things than over someone typing 'holy shit' in a youtube comment
The white, Brit lady has SOUL running thru her veins! Man' I had goose bumps when the audience got to their feet and went crazy! One of the best soul acts I've seen in years!
ADRIENNE PIERCE This isn't rock, what are you talking about? This is new jack swing, a fusion genre of hip hop production and R&B singing and melodies.
Wow, Respect for Lisa Stansfield. This British Lady has some Soul and Rhythm. It seems that the British were coming so close to the American Soul. And her voice was flawless. Now it only makes me more sad that the other British Soul Lady, Miss Amy Winehouse, died way too soon.
Brits, especially from the Northern part of England around her age grew up listening to a lot of black artists and learned to sing from them. Another example, is Mick Hucknall from Simply Red. Blue eyed soul.
You say british were coming so close to american soul but brits had soul and blues way back in the 60s. The Beatles looked up to little richard, did covers of the isley brothers and would absolutely kill that shit. Then dirty mac came out and you cant tell me that didnt have soul in it. Sure it aint Aretha Franklin rnb type shit but still. Not to mention alot of their house funk dance music they have nowadays is great
This lil gay boy survived at 14 in 1989 w this song, Vision of Love, Vogue, Miss You Like Crazy, Buffalo Stance, and a few others....when we had to wait for the song to come on so we could record it off the radio...yaya those were THE days
She was momentarily shocked by the crowds enthusiasm then she fused with them... And a great performance, captured. The apollo, a tough crowd, but she nailed it.
I love you Lisa ❤️ I remember being about 6 or 7 yrs old coming home from school my mother would have this blasted on the radio cooking and cleaning.. The good old days they don't make music close to this anymore
Life is not about the color of your skin. lt's about character and the positive things that make a person unique. No one white, black or otherwise ever had more of an effect on the Apollo crowd than Lisa Stansfield on that day. Go Lisa.
A year later my last post, this is still CHILL INDUCING watching it now. And I hate to play the racecard here, but you definitely can't help but declare that this transcends race. She kicked ass no matter what color she was. They all loved her!
Apollo was all into that performance. Cuz we recognized that girl had soul. She might have been white but when you sing like that, you get Apollo respect. shit i know, i bought that cd back in the 80s on a first job budget.
This is the early days...when Lisa conquered the US market....such a thrill & hornor for her to perform at such legendary venue, the Apollo Theater. I think Lisa was quite taken by the enthusiasm from the audience, she sang another chorus at the wrong place 2:01 lol, but having had many years of singing live experiences, she quickly realized it, spun around, and caught up the melody of the backing track 2:08 , its all good!
CityRhythmPart1 Yeah, I noticed the mistake too. She was able to style it out though and even I, who knows the song really well, wondered for a moment if she was just doing a slightly different 'live' version. She's got an amazing voice and this song showcased it perfectly.
I saw that too. However, I think that the musicians went to the bridge too early and she turned to let them know, then eased into the 2nd verse. Watch her hand at 2:06. Still a great performance all around...:-)
The Apollo haven't had a reaction like that since Buddy holly and the crickets in 1957...She said that "performing at the Apollo was one of the Biggest highlights of her musical career" She also said "The crowd was so electric, you could feel the love and Energy from the stage"
I miss this world...where black and white loved each others music...house music...r&b...dance music...MADONNA...Janet....Whitney....Annie Lennox....we just loved each others GOOD music.
That crowd is one of the hardest. They love u or hate you. U MAKE IT THERE U MAKE IT ANYWHERE. LISA IS SO FULL OF SOUL . LOVE THAT ❤️ WOMAN . LOVE & PEACE. PHIL
