A walking tour in Lisbon along the most beautiful street Rua Augusta.
In 1755, the earth shook under Portugal and Lisbon lay in large parts in ruins. The great earthquake changed the image of the city forever, especially the lower town Baixa Pombalina. Immediately after the quake, the district was planned from scratch, and Marquês de Pombal was responsible for the reconstruction.
It is thanks to him that today you can stroll along Rua Augusta. The boulevard is a beautiful shopping street in the heart of the city and a popular starting point for sightseeing in Lisbon.
Magnificent boulevard in the heart of the city
Rua Augusta stretches for just under 550 meters between two popular landmarks. The Praça do Comércio is a large square right on the banks of the Tagus River that is crowded with street vendors, tourists and artists during the day. At the other end of the Rua is Praça de D. Pedro IV, which locals just call Rossio and is no less worth seeing.
On the Rua Augusta you can stroll quite relaxed, in 1984 it was closed to car traffic and converted into a pure pedestrian zone. Today, the boulevard is the central shopping street in Lisbon. You will meet here mainly smaller stores selling jewelry, handbags, clothes and souvenirs. In the middle of the square, cafés invite you to linger. In the Rua Augusta you can drift or watch the hustle and bustle with a coffee.
