I have a bit less than half a day in Lisbon and it is a lovely day! So let's not hang around the city. Let's get to the beach and then enjoy a walk along the coast from Cascais to Estoril.
I'm not a big city person really, so this route to Cascais with a walk by the sea sounded like just the breath of fresh air I could do with!
Departure: Lisbon - Cais do Sodré, Portugal
Destination: Cascais, Portugal
Distance: 26 km / 16 miles
Duration: 33 mins
Average speed: 47 km/h 29 mph
Cost: Adult return: €4,80 / £4.10
Date of Travel: January 2024
Operator: Comboios de Portugal (CP)
Motive power: CP Class 3250 EMU
Manufacturer: Sorefame (1959) - rebuilt 1998

Always fun to brush it off. I'm in Switzerland next week with Mark from Let's Make a trip - there is a plan to maybe drag him up a mountain for a ride out/walk back. Let's hope the weather holds for it!

I travelled this route a few times for the Expo in 1992. Back then it was usual for the doors to be open, a natural form of aircon! Great little service!

Always a bit unnerving when the doors are left open! Thanks for watching 👍

The nerd that I am especially likes the way different services are organised. Basically, if the line is A-1-2-3-B-4-5-6-C-7-8-9-D, trains going from A to B stop on all the intermediate stations, trains going to C would skip most stops between A and B, but would serve all stations between B and C, and trains to D would skip most station between A, B and C, serving all stations on the part between C and D. Trains ending in B and C would stop on a middle track with platforms on either side for easy changes onto trains going further, and in reverse, people from further down the line who needed an intermediate station. Very clever system!

Great minds think alike! I did that a couple of years ago, but I think I got back on the train one station earlier. It's always nice to get out of the city and the well-trodden tourist spots. Those wide-gauge trains feel huge inside and I didn't realise they were over 60 years old!

Well done you too then! haha, it was great to escape the bustle of the city - although I did enjoy another lovely walk from Cais de Sodre up to Santa Apolonia when I got back into Lisbon. but there were a lot more people to dodge on that walk... Thanks for watching, as ever 👍

Really enjoyed this, we go to Lisbon a lot and getting the train along to Cascais is always a highlight. If you’re ever there again I can recommend Santini ice creams, my husband was brought up in Lisbon and has been going to the same ice cream parlour in Cascais since he was a small child!

Hi. I am from Sintra which is not far from where you were. I wish you would make a video there as it's so beautiful and picturesque. Along that journey, you passed Belém, which is where the famous and delicious "pastel de nata" was born! The pastry shop is over 150 years old and you can sit at a table and have them as they come out of the oven! Still, maybe next time. 😊

Another great Lisbon video, more facts of what you see but you failed to mention the Belem Tower that we get a decent flash of just after the 25 April bridge. This is a great fortification built to protect the Tagus access, and the fun part is to find the rhinoceros.........
@JohnnyHooverTravels

Yes, there's only so much you can say in the voiceover so I decided not to mention anything about the Belem tower as the shot itself wasn't that long - but I did want to keep it in! Thanks for watching 👍

Hi Johnny. On first finding your video I thought that I had visited to Cascais before, but at 70 years old the memory is beginning to fail at times. However, when viewing the wavy pattern on the pedestrian street, I was convinced that I had visited before. A quick search of my online photos came up with 16 June 2015 and a little square called Praça 5 de Outubro in Cascais. The whole surface of the square was that wavy pattern. It tended to induce a feeling similar to seasickness after a while. I spent a short while on the nearby Praia da Ribeira where I ventured for a wee paddle. On the square itself was a statue in front of the town hall but like you, however, my time in Cascais had been limited. That looked like a lovely wee walk back along the coast towards Estoril before you caught the train back to Lisbon. A pity your time was limited as you passed some interesting spots on the train journey itself.

Thanks for sharing your memories too. So it's not just me that finds that paving design a little un-nerving then! Yes, I could have stayed longer, but I suppose that is the nature of my channel that I tend to keep moving! Thanks so much for watching and commenting, it is much appreciated 👍

Thanks, it was a lovely start to the day for sure. I suppose there are various places to eat along the way. The coffee i had near that final station at Estoril was excellent and as it was a bakery they looked to have a very wide selection of goodies too. It was full of locals, so that was a good sign! I was so surprised to hear my name mentioned, My wife didn't believe me when I told her. It was a lovely walk along the beach to the station, as you said the views are lovely, I also like the lovely cobbled streets. We have looked at getting the train to Paris then the sleeper down to Lisbon through Spain then to Cacais, as we stayed for a few days many years ago, certainly loved Lisbon and the tram ride was unreal, shame you didn't go on it. But like you say it is another excuse to visit Lisbon. Look forward to your next one & many thanks.

There are two reasons why Cais do Sodré station looks a bit "off" behind the entry hall. One is the rebuild (1960) and then collapse of the platform roofs in 1963 (killing 50 people); that prompted an improvised hall that was only replaced in the early 2000s, also to serve as an extension to the ferry terminal nearby and to facilitate the subway station below. As another bit of pedantry, the Ponte 25 de Abril was renamed after the revolution of 1974 because it was originally called the Ponte Salazar, after the long-time (but already deceased) dictator of the now upended régime.

That was a trip down memory lane. I had a childhood holiday in Cascais in 1995 and remember using that line to get trains into Lisbon and back several times. The trains look very familar. It's also good to see the locals have given up train surfing as it was rife back then. I guess the Health and Safety police have clamped down there too!
@JohnnyHooverTravels
@JohnnyHooverTravels 3 месяца назад
I'm pleased there was no train surfing too. Yes, those trains are very old and have been refurbished. Another commenter was saying they are now due for replacement. Thanks for watching 👍

Because I work on the railway in the UK I get free train travel in Portugal (as well as in many other European countries) for which you receive a paper coupon and also had problems with the ticket gates in Lisbon and Sintra. In theory you should use the disabled access gates, press the assistance button and you'll be let through. In practice you have to find someone who's able to let you through. Easier said than done! As for beaches the only one I nearly went on was in Lisbon but seeing 2 rodents scampering on the beach put me off 😢
@JohnnyHooverTravels
@JohnnyHooverTravels 3 месяца назад
nice bonus getting the free trips! I will return and visit Sintra as I've heard a lot about it. and yes, I pressed the call/assistance button at the gate but nothing at all happened. Lucky I met the cleaner.

Lovely trip, Helen and I did it last November and it was lovely weather then too. Did you walk under the Ponte de 25 Abril? It seems like the deck is entirely made of metal mesh so it makes an incredible racket with all the traffic running over it.

@JohnnyHooverTravels 3 месяца назад
Thanks Jon. no, I didn't walk the bridge as I only had half a day in the city, so this was pretty much it, apart from a nice walk from Cais de Sodre up to Santa Apolonia when I got back into Lisbon. Any other advice of what to see around Lisbon gratefully accepted to add to my list. I already want to go back to visit Sintra and Rossio station! Best wishes to you both 👍

Whilst i quite like some graffiti art. I can never go with vandalism that blocks out the windows. That seems really mindless. I would rather people just left the trains alone...
