As an avid 'war' metal enjoyer since the 90's, I love 100 of those bands and can identify songs. There's an entire community solely dedicated to that distinctive sound. I rarely listen to anything else aside from some old school death metal and noise.

Collection isn’t super big but have been steadily growing it, buying tapes, CDs, and LPs. Mostly own random releases by bands but I’ve been trying to back track and pick up all the classic shit I like before delving into owning some more of the extreme music. J Dawg saying there’s no riffs, grooves or sing along moments is a load of crap. Some of the best most catchy moments I’ve ever heard of all time have been on records by Blasphemy, Revenge/Conqueror and Beherit. It is intense and fast true and noisy, but there’s always moments which slow down and the song structure is there. I will admit maybe it is a little saturated but new bands suck as Anti Christ Seige machine and Gorgon Vomit are keeping it refreshing.

Im an album guy. I hardly find any band where I love every album they put out. Maybe Bolt Thrower and a few others. I also feel like their is only about 10 bands per any metal sub genra that a really worth listening too consistently. Especially with niche stuff like gore grind.

Some bands that come to mind that I like every single album by that have more than 6 albums are Immolation, Incantation, Autopsy, Asphyx, Dismember, Vader, Deceased, Bolt Thrower, Nunslaughter, Sodom, and Destroyer 666. Other than that I can't think of any other bands that have more than 6 albums or a massive discography where I like everything by them so I have a total of 11 bands where I like everything by them. There are other bands such as Archgoat, who are my favorite Black Metal band, and Marduk (my other favorite) where I like everything that I have heard from them but didn't include because in Archgoat's case or bands in their caliber they only have 5 full length albums out, a couple of EP's, some splits, and a demo so they are just shy of 6 albums but nevertheless the fact they haven't fucked anything up so far is impressive as most bands don't even have 5 good albums along with the other releases they did which are all killer. In Marduk's case and bands in their caliber I haven't gotten around to listening to every single album they put out. I stopped after their Rom album. Their second album with Mortis. But the fact that all the albums that I did hear were all great, which is 10 albums, along with their demo is pretty impressive as most bands don't even have 10 good albums.

As far as the classic stuff goes, maybe Testament

Dismember, Marduk, Mercyful Fate, King Diamond, Death, Hypocrisy, Nevermore, Mortician, Edge of Sanity, Darkthrone, Belphegor, Sodom, Devourment, Autopsy, Exhumed, and Revenge are all bands I can think of off the top of my head where I like every single thing they've done in one way or another. In terms of Death Metal, Dismember has NEVER put out anything even remotely disappointing since Like An Everflowing Stream. I know a lot of people don't like Massive Killing Capacity, and those people are wrong.

you nailed most metal fans, they care more about the "vibe" of the sound and the image of the band and another factor you left out, how rare they are. i've seen metal heads jerk off the most god fucking awful death and thrash metal bands that just have the most boring riffs and songs because 1. they are from the 80s 2. they sound raw and have a shitty production etc and 3. they are relatively obscure. how good and memorable the songs and riffs are is like last on the fucking list, for someone who puts that FIRST it's so fucking weird to me lol. other genres of music don't have that cause they don't have subcultures and image and shit. tons of metal heads just care more about knowing the most rare bands than listening to stuff that genuinely stands out and is good. some obscure bands of course rip apart every one else, but then so do some of the most popular ones.
