Immerse yourself in idyllic rural African village life. Experience the majesty of the surrounding forest and rivers and meet an array of glorious creatures and characters living in harmony with each other. But when a stranger arrives from a faraway land, bringing with him change and new ideas, it threatens the villagers’ way of life and tests the strength of family, their loyalty to each other and their heritage. Seeing the effects of the stranger’s arrival on her village, a young girl is faced with a difficult decision. Will she find her voice and use it to stand up for what she believes in?
Set against the backdrop of African colonisation this piece uses engaging physical theatre, original comic book style, mesmerising song and powerful storytelling, ‘Listen’ is a show about empowering the youth and encouraging them to listen to their hearts, pay attention to the world around them and use the power of their own voice to stand up for what they believe is right, honourable and for the betterment of society.
Written and Directed by Nhnlanhla Mkhwanazi, featuring Amanda Valela, Stuart Palmer, Mncedisi Ncedani and Sisipho Gxagxa, this textless play has been created with the intention of touring to local primary and secondary schools as well as international festivals. It carries a powerful message for people of all ages.
