On a second speaker there seem to be something between voice coil and magnet, that's why it does sound like this. I have experimented with a lot of soviet era speakers and most of doing like this has some stuff, mostly iron dust, between voice coil and magnet causing scratching sound with low frequencies. Nice collection, thanks for upload.

DAM the Henry sounded amazing....kinda sounded and looked like a vintage JBL...just think if that bad boy was in a cabinet....with a powerhorn tweeter !

If you put a wooden plank or box around around the front part the sound will be much fuller: a modern speaker without sounds +/- the same

The Henry one is the best, the Philips both rattle but could be fixed and they sound good.

Thanks for posting! Dont get to see many of the European speaker/horns and working too. It is very interesting to hear what historic speakers sound like. They all have amazing designs.

I'm amazed how good most of these sound in the vocal range. None of them wanted to go below about 200 Hz without distortion, but the voices were amazingly intelligible. if combined with woofers and tweeters,(using these for the midranges) they could be made to sound better than anyone would expect. It would be a lot of fun to try that. In my opinion, the free standing Henry electrodynamic speaker sounded the best of all of them, by a close margin. There was one, in a wood enclosure, that sounded "metallic" to me, so it's not one I would consider. Even the horns sounded like they could be high fidelity midranges. As midrange speakers, I would run them between 400 Hz, and about 5,000 Hz.

is the "Brown" a dynamic/moving coil or a reed/magnetic speaker? looks like a strange hybrid between a cone speaker and a horn speaker...

My mother liked that sound. Reminded her of scratchy 78's.

@ 2:50 That Philips speaker doesn't seem to rattle as much as most of the other speakers. Nice video's by the way! :-)

The Henry Magnos is a 15inch speaker, total dimensions [cm]: 39x41x22, the magnet has 8,5x16(d) cm

A tip, instead of rotating over the top (thus turning the camera up-side down, which is very confuzing to watch) then simply go around the speaker and film it from the front/from with the camera at it's correct position, it's very interesting to watch the old speakers and I'd like to see them filmed better. :) You still get a thumbs up for having such a fine collection.

Interesting, but why didn't you move the microphone on-axis for some of the speakers?

am i the only one that wants to take a pair of those beautiful Henrey Magnos speakers out on a date? vintage audio equipment really is so romantic after all.

Thanks - The original quality is always the same, music is from the same CD. But: the speakers are not all restored and repaired, they don´t sound all, as they could do.

most speakers have no cabinet and still sounded fine.

How do you use the Speakers? I have one from 1929 but the plug has 4 metal prongs it’s a ATWATER KENT F-4 Speaker.

I bet that those speakers sound more naturaly and nicer more than half of todays speakers. In that days people listened MUSIC not a vibrating air which is called dubstep or something like this

You can real tell the difference between the wound voice coil and the old needle driven cones.

Again, several speakers sound as though they are either mis-adjusted or over-driven.

fascinating amp pre mosfet pure and powerful. timewarp speakers give u a crook back in the day. MULLARD schematic as mechanical to mechanical vibrator, rollover Baethoven and then there was light.

On what impedance these speakers operate?

Are you impedance matching with these systems? These can't just be driven by a modern amp, or you get the awful sound you seem to be getting. Modern speakers use a high impedance drive on a low impedance load. These speakers are expecting the opposite, and impedance matching means a 600 (or more) ohm output impedance.

Whats the name of the music from 5:46 ?

Where are the enclosures for some of these? Many look that they've been pulled out of a cabinet or maybe from behind a wall. Bass response is poor running like this.

Yes

Many of these old speakers were made to be practical and not for reproducing music. Many of the better speakers of that era were huge horns, like RCA cinema speakers.

These speakers were definitely not designed to handle that sort of bass.

I simply love them for wild nature hi hi. They do what were supposed to - 0,75 W power pushed with middle frequencies. Unfortunately today they are loaded with bass too. It was forbidden then. But overall impression overpasses most of today's crap. Nice non fatigue treble and middle. My last construction I made with German drivers made in 1959 -tweeters too. Already some audio lovers press me to sell them but no way - I want them for me :). I will make video later. My project before (with modern drivers) You check and listen in my videos "Ultimate reality speaker system"

using the old horn-speakers .... please cut the low tones or at least do NOT boost them! They were totally not produced to render under 200Hz! I wonder also what wattage you're driving those! Most of those speakers can (only) handle 1 up to 2watt. (some up to 10 watts) Never use a speaker-chassis without at least placing them on some board or in a baffle. Sorry, but you are a "speaker-killer" and not a speaker-lover!
