‘Everything Stays’ is actually part 2 to the Steven Universe song ‘Fade Away’. Rebecca wrote them from both the child’s perspective and the toys perspective.
Hey Mathew, fun fact: That nostalgic feeling is called anemoia! it's nostalgia for something you've never experienced! I get the feeling every time I listen to Soldier Poet King by the Oh Hellos
Fun fact, Everything Stays was inspired by Rebecca Sugar's first existential crisis as a child, when she found one of her lost* toys in her back yard, right where she left it, but it had changed slightly from being out in the elements for so long. This is also what inspired the creation of Spinel from Steven Universe.
@@beyondviolet many songs you sing to kids or get kids to sing are fucked up lol, like It's Raining It's Pouring which is about a man who bumps his head at night only to go back to sleep and die
Marcelino wasn’t breaking up with pb there, she was actually just singing a song she sung to like to defeat this monster when she had the break up. She was just singing the song again to defeat the monster once more, but obviously it comes across badly
Yes, for the context she felt like she needed to sing songs that were less soft because her and pb are together in present day (they got back together, confirmed for sure in the series finale) and so she didnt feel like her songs were angsty enough to send the monster back like she did before, which is where most of the video takes place. It's a flashback to when she sang the song the first time. It's also why at the beginning when it's their present day selves bubblegum looks so uncomfortable re-hearing the song.
Love this!! I also recommend "I'm Just Your Problem", "Slow Dance With You", and "Time Adventure" (specifically the Rebecca Sugar performance) from Adventure Time!
I don't know how I didn't realize Marshall was voiced by Childish Gambino until like, maybe a year ago. I guess it kinda make sense I was a fan of his comedy special on Netflix and some of his music, cause I was exposed to his talent as a kid without even knowing. That's so cool!
Actually, being harsh is the point of that breakup song. The breakup happened hundreds of years ago She had a childhood trauma that made her want to drive people away on her own terms, before they pushed her away. So just before the song, PB calls her “monster trash” during a fight. Hurt, Marcy goes hardcore edgy to hurt PB even worse. She wanted to act like she was in control, and end things like she’s happy to be rid of PB. In the special, Obsidian, the two are back together, and Marcy is worrying that she’s going soft. Because she’s happy and isn’t carrying that anger anymore. Why she’s singing the song again in front of everyone, is complicated. If you’re interested, you can watch Obsidian as a stand-alone, it doesn’t require too much understanding of the series.
"Weird nostalgia and longing for something I've never experienced" I feel this every time I listen to Soldier, Poet, King. Someone mentioned what that feeling was called but I don't remember. But even with a word to call it, it's still kind of hard to describe to someone who hasn't felt it themselves.
When it comes to Woke Up, both of them were in the wrong. Marceline didn't care about the people there and bubblegum called her "monster trash" so marceline started singing Woke Up
Context behind the full version of Daddy Why Did You Eat My Fries is apparently that all the songs for Adventure Time were initially full length songs but they were cut down as needed for each episode.
"Part of me loves that this is just what humans chose to do" Couldn't say it better myself. When the world isn't actively trying to set itself on fire the various art it produces truly is something special Any interest in watching the rest of the show now? XD
I'm glad you went back to revisit the show a bit. Not going to lie, I'm tired right now and Everything Stays and Come Along With Me had me super teary eyed. I love this show, I have a lot of good memories with it and am so happy they put that much effort into producing it. ❤️
When it got to everything stays, I just started crying. My mom and I have always had a similar relationship. I have listened to that song millions of times and yet I've only cried over it once (today)
Even if it's just in your own time, "time adventure" is such a sweet and sad song. The version where Rebecca Sugar sings it at some kind of convention is so sweet and sad with Jake the dogs voice actor holding back the tears.
Ironically Come Along with Me made me feel the opposite, it made me feel like a chapter of my life just ended. I had a really long cry and just took a moment to enjoy all that Adventure Time had given me. It felt so beautiful to me that the Music hole was the one singing the ending song all along, just seemed so fitting lol, and the fact that the whole show ends by making the ending song diegetic felt like the best way to bring everything back around. Man I'm getting all sentimental lol, I'm so happy to have been able to experience this show growing up
I've never watched Adventure Time, but I love Steven Universe so I'm familiar with the "trivia" about Rebecca Sugar and AT. I love the story behind Everything Stays. It was a real event, and also is the inspiration behind Drift Away from the Steven Universe movie. The story goes Sugar found a teddy bear they had forgotten in the backyard. The back was dirty and sun bleached, but the front that was facing down looked unchanged.
As for those fries. I had a similar food situation just the other way around. My relationship with my father is highly ambivalent. But one day I realized that he really loves me and he cares about me because ... he regularly buys such ... canned rice and fish pate. When I was younger, I ate it all the time. But for years somehow I have not liked this food. And yet a can or 2 is always in the fridge. One day he pointed out to me that I don't eat it at all. So I told him that he doesn't eat it either. And he replied, "I never liked it, I only buy it for you." I replied that I prefer "canned mackerel fish salad". I went to my room and I literally cried. It's kind of a small thing. But it hit me like a hammer.
Pretty much all of adventure times music is amazing even the joke songs. Marceline definitely gets the best collection of songs, which makes sense. But hers are also more heartbreaking lol She lived through a majority of the apocalypse alone, was already feared for being half demon, and then later in her teens got turned into a vampire? I mean, come on.
every time I hear "everything stays" I BURST into tears. it hits especially hard after rewatching the show all the way through. also "time adventure" and "remember you". GOD Rebecca sugar knows how to make me cry
Everything stays reminds me of the toxic relationship with my mom The past failed mother figures I had The complicated relationship with my father The loss of several friends and sibling figures My little brother whom lives with my toxic mother and I’m not allowed to hold him anymore The fact I may never see my sister or nephew ever again As well as the death of my great grandma and my grandma. Grandpa is the only one I truly have now but sometimes even he says stuff that truly breaks my heart….. I only have online friends now as well as a love interest and maybe ONE real life friend but I can’t see him often. We talk a lot tho. And his mom feels like she could be a potential mother figure to me but…I don’t know if I should trust her yet.
For some small context on the break up song: It was actually a flashback prior to when they were dating before, and Marceline and PB were arguing which is why Marceline was being unreasonably harsh in the song (。•ㅅ•。)
So in the Woke Up video, its showing a flashback to when they broke up. But don't worry I didn't understand it at first either, so your good. Also I love that your reacting to songs that I absolutely love, from a show that remains one of the biggest parts of my childhood. Thanks!
The song "Everything stays" was writen by Rebecca sugar im pretty sure, shes the creator of Steven Universe!. The character Spinel on Steven Universe was based on an event back in her childhood, and that song is about that same event. So that song and Spinel are conected in a way. Rebecca realized things can change even when shes not around, and she srote a song and then made a character based on it.
The final song in video was the ending song in the series, but you never heard it from beginning til the end. But in this, last episode it play all the way from the beginning till the end and when it’s ends it simply show us, how two of new characters(don’t remember names) rise the Finn’s sword. It was a final of about 12 yrs show. Many ppl grow up with the Finn and now, after it ends all what we have is that nostalgic feeling. Adventure time end was what i never wanted, but it was what I needed.
Ooooo pls check out more adventure time songs! I really love "Time Adventure" and "Slow Dance With Me" and "When I Don't Remember You (I Remember You)"
the context for the marcy and pb breakup song is that it was the song marceline sung when they broke up the first time before the show was set (which is why in like the first couple seasons they have that weird tension) . in the current time they are together and very happy but marceline had to sing the song again in an attempt to stop this monster as it was the song she used the last time :)
I recommend you react to Black Friday by Starkid. Its kind of the "sequel" to The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals, but it definetly leaves some confusion with the ending, (the comments will explain the Hatchetfield Universe). But other than the complex parts, it has some incredibly beautiful vocal delivery and a great plot. There's also a lot of TGWDLM references, and a lot of foreshadowing in the songs.
It feels so stupid that the fry song was the one that made me cry. I also have an awful dad and I’m reminded of that almost every time I interact with him and I feel like the song captures that experience pretty well.
Everything stays is actually based off of a toy that Rebecca sugar lost as a child that became slightly discovered from the sun but the other side was still the same. That was also the inspiration for spinel character from steven universe
I very much loved how this show grappled emotion easily enough for youth 🤍 I'd like to recommend seeing red handled denials new song "Father Said" if you'd at all like to get into a metal song that has a lot to it 🤍 the singer is my absolute hero, she too vocally powerful for this planet 🥰 Love ya, stay safe 🤍
If you haven’t seen the series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, I highly recommend you check it out, even if it’s just some of the song clips. It’s a fun musical comedy series with lots of homages to theater and pop songs. You could check out the opening themes but some of my personal favorites are “Settle for me”, “Research Me Obsessively”, and “The Moment is Me”
I was there for the final live airing of adventure time, it was so fun to watch, but it was sad. The show I followed for years was finally ending, I was so sad. The music, art and characters were gorgeous. Best show ever in my book
Oh man, you need to watch/listen to the music from Over the Garden Wall! It’s beautiful and is also meant to elicit this nostalgic feelings. It’s not the same style, but instead it’s all about old cartoons and makes a lot of parallels to mortality and changes in life.
I wish you had listened to Time Adventure as well. That song often gets me some weird kind of emotional. Not quite the in series version but a cover really does it for me, because I like the vocals better. But the lyrics are just so heartfelt.
Btw when it was the "Woke up" song, it wasn't a break up more on a song about them ending their friendship, that was a long time ago before they were together
YESSS IVE BEEN WAITING SO LONG FOR U TO REACT TO ADVENTURE TIME SONGS!! also if u plan on listing to more adventure time songs u need to listen to “time adventure”!
You should react to soundtrack of Kipo and the age of wonderbeast. They went REALLY hard with their music. Especially the ones that were seen sang on screen- "Heroes on fire" and "What we have is you".
The song everything stays was based on something that happened in Rebecca as a child when she left a toy bunny in the yard when she turned it it was faded .
I've heard you mention in a video before that you like when artists have big words and flowy lyrics strung together in raps, and I think you'd enjoy some of the Stupendium's music
The context of The 6:08 song is that in The past they slayd a dragon with Music and The song they used was a distrack and now The dragon broke Luse again so they playd The same song but bublegun gum and marsalaen are togethers again so umm… yeah 😬
Hello!! If you were planning on doing another one of these with adventure time, I’d recommend Francis forever and slow dance as they’re both marcaline songs and area my personal favorites :)
I would love more Poppy reactions. She released an album that is more punk and grunge instead of heavy metal back in September. I recommend Flux (the title track), Lessen the Damage, So Mean, and Never Find My Place.
You should totally listen to some more songs, Rebecca Sugar's songs are always gorgeous. Time Adventure is beautiful and almost haunting (Rebecca's live version). Slow Dance with you has some interesting underlying vibes
Is there anyone else besides me that has cried over the come along with me ending when it shows the future I just get the shivers and it makes me tear up for some reason and everything stays that song makes me cry everytime I listened to it
I used to love Adventure Time growing up, so this is really nostalgic for me! I'd love it if you'd react to the band Avenged Sevenfold, their music may be a bit different from what you've reacted to (at least from what I've seen). They do rock/heavy metal songs and it would be so cool to see your reaction!
You -should- _need_ to watch the The Schuyler Sister (Hamilton) performed by Joshua Colley. Its a gender swapped version and the kids who play the sisters KILLED it
Nostalgia just hit me like a truck because I remember every time I went to my grandma's house I hoped that Adventure Time was on and when it was It did not matter what time it was I was gonna watch it until it was over
