The second best DT album for me. Fresh and progressive music. No pointless shredding, but every instrument played for the whole of the song. It's peculiar to start listening this album from the b-side as I've, obviously, always started it from the beginning. Dream Theater sound excellent on this one!
An overture is a piece of music for the orchestra to play at the beginning of an opera or ballet. The word comes from the French word for "opening" because it "opens" the show. Overtures usually have tunes which are going to be heard during the opera or ballet. In this way it prepares the audience for what is to come.
This is, IMO, their magnum opus. The piece by which they should be judged for the rest of time. Your comments about this being more compositional in nature are spot on, and the whole band gets many chances to shine while maintaining a strong balance throughout. Also, the subject matter and lyrics are insightful and brilliant, touching on some very sensitive and important issues relating to mental health. The way the music fits each topic as it comes up is amazing.
Finally, back to some Dream Theater! Definitely Got to do A Change of Seasons too. Best Dream Theater song. Please go back to doing ISIS as well. ISIS - Grinning Mouths. Love your reactions
Croatia is an incredible country. My wife and I visited Dubrovnik a few years ago and were amazed how beautiful and interesting it was. Loved it and would love to go back some day!
Hi Jim, to wrap Up 2019, or startup 2020. I have this 19 minutes masterpiece of request. sound of contact - mobius slip. I know you are busy but really Hope you Will do this one as end 2019 or start 2020. Leadsinger is Simon Collins, yep the son of Phil. And Simon sings and dont get chocked, he plays the drums also🤣
OMG the First time I heard this was Amazing..... Nice to see someone Tackling This Beast of an Amazing Song...... Enjoy the Ride..... Can't Wait to see your Enjoyment of this
I recommend that you check out Mike Portnoy's band Son's of Apollo. In the song Godof the Sun you can hear the influence of his many years as Dream Theater's drummer. So very good!!!
May I suggest Renaissance - The Song of Sheherezad Really good stuff from the 70s, whole orchestra in there, glorious! Basically a Piano Concerto with a singer
You definitely need to check out A Change of Seasons by Dream Theater, which is, to me, their best song next to Octavarium! Also, check out Haken! They're brilliant as well. I recommend Crystallised or Celestial Elixir.
Please, react to "The best of times" from Dream theater...! and thanks for your vidds ...is great to watch someone who enjoy doing this kind of entertainment.
@@JimNewstead I wouldn't say it's worth a video, because it is mostly very faithful to the studio version. But it is still a very good live performance.
Hi Jim! Here's the thing... I don't like Dream Theater. Never really liked them. I've been listening to their music for years hoping that maybe one day something will magically click and I'm gonna start enjoying the fruits of these guys incredible musical skills. Well, that didn't happen. I've stopped trying more than 15 years ago. However today, something has changed. I simply wanted to quickly check out your channel and relax after listening to extreme metal bands for the last few months without a break. Saw Dream Theater video smiling at me and decided to give it a try. Guess what? I loved it... for almost 10 minutes. Until I've heard the voice of one James LaBrie. Holy Hell! His tone literally makes me mad, causes twitching in my left eye and activates Tourettes syndrome that I never had. Anyway, it's good to be back here and thanks for this video. Now I know exactly why I can't stand listening to this brilliant and very talented musicians. :) Have a great Sunday Jim!
James LaBrie polarizes ... and even me as fan of the first hour I don't like the newer stuff because of his singing ... and see him live is even worth, he just doesn't hit the high notes anymore ... I love the older stuff and my personal theory is, he was better as long as Mike told him how to sing ... as seen in the making of DVD of Systematic Chaos ... another theory is, that his singing sounds more european and american singers simply sound different ... more volume... harder ... but as you learned, the music is great ... at least it was as long as Mike Portnoy was the boss - my opinion 🤘
HMMMM. interesting piece. Yes definitely interesting. I have heard a bit of this bands works. This is however my first time hearing this. It makes me happy to know that they have other music to hear. Because interesting only goes so far before boredom sets in. And that is boring...
Hello Jim, I'm curious to know what is the average age for people listening to your channel and Dream Theater in particular ? I noticed there is always more men commenting than women and I've been to DT shows, and other live shows, there's always more men. Is Heavy metal, and prog rock a man's music ? what does your tshirt says, "real men bake ? something?"
Who knows! Probably I should look at the analytics but I’m not that bothered either way. I can’t be doing with all that macho testosterone fuelled crap blokes spew most of the time. Real men bake bread👍🏼
@@JimNewstead real men listen to metal, bake bread, and bring dead boars to his family! Arrghh! Women can listen to metal and bake bread, but I' d rather pet the boar than kill him!
Jim, have you read this wiki page about this song, there's some explanations about the lyrics en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_Degrees_of_Inner_Turbulence_(song)
War inside my head is about aa bipolar woman. Having bipolar disorder myself, it's a very hard hitting song. So is solitary shell, which is about Autism...
Part II of the preparation for tomorrow : Six degrees is a good album, but as follow up to Scenes it cannot top this maybe greatest of their albums. Of the song 6 degrees I don't like all parts, that's why I don't listen to it too often ... and the Grand Finale is no grand finale compared to Finally free ... you will see one day 😆🤘
So where do I begin with this one Jim? . . . Part I I know! From the very beginning :D. Well, at this time in January of 2002, I had been working at Tower Records in Santa Monica Calif. near the famous pier. I knew it was coming out, I believe from reading music trade magazines (I did not own a computer as of yet, nor did the store have a modern computer to look-up such stuff, with images. Though the supervisor had a desktop in his office, he was a bit of an _______ ). So I got word from the reps around Christmas of 2001, it was coming in January with hopes of promotional material. Sure enough I got quite a few double-sided posters (2 I kept for myself) and made this "quicky" display for it: fav.me/ddk362a And with that I received the "Metropolis Live Scenes from a Memory" DVD and Six Degrees CD from the label rep. This became my 2nd fave album in the DT catalogue. I had been a fan since the debut of "When Dream and Day Unite" (on LP from the "Mechanic" label, which I still have), so each album to come was always exciting. The "Overture" was just that, it was a preview of everything to come. If the album "Metropolis: Scenes from a Memory Book II" (the previous album) was the Musical, then Six Degrees was the Stage Play, with its Broadway Musical embellishments. I was always amazed at how they capture certain moments that make you think of a mood or setting, like the part Jim, you picked up on at 4:45, and then Mike Portnoy plays the drum much like a drummer in a stage play at 7:00 (tap tap tap). That must come from his love of Film & Film and Musical Scores. And then eases us into the set-up, and the various tragic lives to come. As it says on the albums wiki page; "(it) explores the stories of six individuals suffering from various mental illnesses. Particularly represented are (1) bipolar and (2) post-traumatic stress disorder, (3) schizophrenia, (4) post-partum depression, (6) autism and (7) dissociative personality disorder. Furthermore, the title of the album may also allude to the fact that each song on the album could be seen as a different form of inner turbulence, with the six tracks making another reference to the six degrees, along with the apparent reference to the six degrees of separation." This was some HEAVY stuff, and I knew musically it was going to be a rollercoaster ride of emotions, but I didn't think parts of it would hit me in the gut. Our first character we're along for the ride in her ups and downs, caught up in her frantic life, and those that to catch her when she falls. With that feeling that we may be back to see where we left off in her particular story. War Veterans in particular are a soft-spot (our "Veterans Day" comes this Monday), and the character suffering through PTSD painted a movie in my head. The band was able to create very sympathetic characters through the moods of the music and lyrical content within minutes. And that's just the 2 characters so far . . . . To be continued.
I feel nothing from Illumination Theory. I think the better alternative is A Change of Seasons for a longer song. Or for their most emotional, Space Dye Vest, Disappear, Vacant, or maybe Another Day.
That is the comment i hear the most from people i introduce DT to and they don't like it. Too perfect playing come up a lot too. And i actually understand where they come from.
Bands struggling to like even though so many say they are great....Judas Priest, Rush, Megadeath and yes....DreamTheatre....but as a music fan o know it usually just takes the right time for you to be suckered in to loving a band....not loving this Jim, like you say bit Queen, then royal variety performance meets 70s TV series intro....then Queen again....then average TV end credits tune....sry bit boring...
