Portal OST is like the definition of ambience. You don't notice it the whole game and after listening to the soundtrack you realized how funky it actually is.
I can definitely see the change of pace with both soundtracks. Portal 1 had this clinical and uneasy ambience that makes the player feel utterly alone It definitely matches with what was going on in the lore with the Black Mesa incident happening simultaneously and what was to come in Half-Life 2. Portal 2 changes absolutely everything with replacing the fear of being alone to the fear of getting smashed by a big mashy spike plate.
Portal 1 has chell in a place she does not understand, scared of everything. Portal 2 chell has seen it before, and Is ready to take on the fight again.
@@rustybeskar4664 it could also be because of the fact that there's more fast paced stuff, so the music is different to keep the adrenaline up. If you notice tho, everything makes music. The laser nodes and receiver, the light bridges and the companion cube.
Portal 1 is ghostly, something is always off but you’re not sure if you can put your finger on what’s off, or maybe you do and you’re just too scared to admit what’s off. Portal 2 is being in a place that’s familiar, old, broken in, but also literally broken. Things aren’t the same as they used to be, and you wonder if they ever could be. In other words, a VOCABULARY IS FUN TO USE and I’m pretty much just saying nonense
"Just a heads-up: That coffee we gave you earlier had fluorescent calcium in it so we can track the neuronal activity in your brain. There's a slight chance the calcium could harden and vitrify your frontal lobe. Anyway, don't stress yourself thinking about it. I'm serious. Visualizing the scenario while under stress actually triggers the reaction." - Cave Johnson
I love how the only acceptable way to describe Triple Laser Phase is with the Triple Laser test chamber itself. I think there's something wrong with it though.
@@Valveiscool. idk why this comment is funny, i dont make good jokes! i got another comment from a song from deltarune that got 792 likes! and even a heart, its so popular its been going on for a year! 55 replys, i dont make good jokes!
I feel like the original Portal gives off a more 'alone' and 'dead' feeling to it. While Portal 2 gives off a more 'robotic' and 'high-tech' feel to it.
how could you miss what is singlehandedly one of the most iconic and beautiful masterpieces of music composition, machiavellian bach (frakenturrets and excursion funnel too) 😭😭😭
HL2 OST: Mission Impossible-esque music, guns go pewpew against mean alien police Portal OST: Ooh ooh WaA wAa and other spooky science noises oooh portals
Most of the portal 1 ost makes me think of the comforting futuristic liminal feeling Portal 1’s atmosphere has. Portal 2’s ost is a little more varied for me.
its always interesting to me how the opinions on liminal stuff is always divided with people who find it comforting and people (me) who find it absolutely terrifying
this video made me realize that the different instruments used in each part of the OST represent what aperture looked like during that section of the game. (more acoustic sounding instruments during the beginning and when in lower/old aperture, and more synth heavy songs when in upper/new aperture. surprised i never picked up on that earlier tbh)
i love how 99% ofportal 1 is melancholic etc and then portal 2 is a mix of melancholy , high energy , silly , and basically every emotion under the sun
one makes me feel uneasy and another makes me feel adrenaline. and they might make you feel different things, which is okay! BUT i hope we can all agree that both ost's are absolute BANGERS 💪💪
Check the whole soundtrack carefully there's a lot of motifs wearlier than expected and some popping out for really short times later Actual masterpiece
A good place to start is "The Courtesy Call", it has most of the motifs in portal 2 from Wheatley's 3 themes, Portal 2's theme (the last part of the song), the aperture jingle (start), and the "Vistas" theme
honestly i rarely notice the music in these types of games but in portal (especially 2) you can really see the impact it has on the whole experience. my moment was during the part where he kills you when i paused and immediately wrnt looking for the soundtrack
I don't know if I'll ever have a video game experience as truly magical as playing portal 2 for the first time, age 12, on my crappy laptop that could barely run it. No game since has captivated me quite as much.
Honestly, after playing Half Life Alyx several times, and now relistening to the Portal 2 soundtrack, I can definitely tell that they're both composed by the same guy.
Fun Fact: All the songs made for Portal and Portal 2 are made by Aperture Science machines itself. You can see this on the Artist section of everysong as "Aperture Science Phychoacoustic Laboratories". Actually, this make you think this game it's like a Opera, but for more details, search more about it. ;)
honestly the OST is part of my reasoning for Portal 2 being the best game of all time. even without the game you can tell the story beats through the music also Love as a Construct and Hard Sunshine make me cry
Stop what are you doing 9999999 The Future starts with you There she is You know her? 15 acres of broken glass I saw a deer today I'm Different I made it all up Comedy= Tragedy + Time You will be perfect An accent beyond Turret Redemption life Bring your daughter to work day Don't do it I AM NOT A MORON You are not part of the control group TEST The Part where he kills you Bombs for throwing at you Your Precious Moon
as a person who has every albums on the music player and is familiar with all of these, this is crazily accurate (bro missed FrankenTurrets, Machiavellian Bach, Excursion Funnel🤓🤓🤓)
I was just listening to the portal 1 ambience and now i want to replay both games again. I havent touched portal since august 2020 and portal 2 since it turned 10 years old (18th april 2021). I was suprised when i saw that this video came out 2 months ago because the portal community has been very quiet for a long time now. I just wish that we could experience old valve again...
