He has to go down as one of the top voices of all time! I have watched some live stuff and heard he is nearly indistinguishable live too. I will find out in a little over a month! Can't think of another album giving me goose bumps as much as this one.

This album is really beautiful. Reminds me very much of Lightbulb Sun/In Absentia era Porcupine Tree: metal adjacent, classy progressive rock.

This album is one to listen more often. It really grabs you more and more! Don't know if you had the change to see them live? If not, please do! They are absolutely great! Riverside is headlining the Prognosis festival in London April 22/23

I saw in Dublin last year and for me they are even better live specially in the right room with accustics. they are coming to Belfast in May and definitely I am going again.

I agree with your thoughts about "The Place Where I Belong." Not only is it musically beautiful and complex, but Mariutz's personal yet relatable lyrics speak to what many of are feeling about the modern world. I just shared this song with a student who was feeling overwhelmed with trying to meet other people's expectations, and she felt it helped her get a different perspective.

I've heard some people say that the second track there is too long. I feel like it was about right. It built nicely to the bar is too high section lyrically and then a nice build in the music. One of their best I would say. This is not a backward step. I would say they lacked dynamics at times in the past but this actually has a nice mix of heavy, melodic and variations in the linstruments. Dare I say there is a little bit of Lunatic soul coming through at times. It hasn't blown me away completely but repeated listens is making a connection and I like what they are saying lyrically.

Riverside regularly get compared with Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree, but this album reminds me more of Deep Purple. I am still trying to get into the album. Love Fear... took me a few listens but ended up in my top 3. Wasteland, however, did not grow on me. Really miss the input of Piotr on guitar. His tone and feel were vital to the band.

All the great songs make us self reflect. First listen I thought the vocal delivery on The Place Where I belong was a bit odd, especially for Riverside. It's just different and that maybe what critics are referring to. However, after multiple listens the narrative vocal lines on this track are clear and just right for this song.

Good evening Jim, Bring it on. First song: a big bit Dream Theatery. I love the contrast between the bits. The last heavy bit should have been longer. Second song: a very light dreamy and vulnerable start of the song, love it. The second part with the organ is ok, no more no less. The third part is much better. The ending is very good. The lyrics are great. I’m not interested in what people think of me. I’m not here just to please them.

Hi Jim, getting this record took me back to when a Genesis or Floyd LP was released. Coppers tin, Christmas cash, settee,Mum, bus, record shop, bus, school if still time,4 hours of heaven. A lot different now but the anticipation was just the same. Meanwhile, some of my favourite records I disliked to start with (Duke, 6 plays ish and now love it. FEAR by Marillion 2 years! Now it’s a good one). I like this album and like you say lots of detail to enjoy. Hasnt what’s his name got a fantastic voice. Seems even better on this album. Enjoy!

Amen to your comment on The Place where I belong reminding you of Porcupine Tree. I absolutely agree. The first album I listened to was STupid Dream which is still possibly my overall fave P Tree album followed by their next album Lightbulb Sun. This is the era of Porcupine Tree where I am reminded of them. I also loved the remaining albums of P Tree that followed but some of the heavier Toolesque tracks like .3, Strip the Soul etc were skippers for me. Its like Pineapple Thief too. I loved the early Pineapple Thief, especially the lush acoustic softer songs, but the current P Thief with Gavin is a bore-fest overall.

While the Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree references are surely there, I wouldn't be surprised if someone told me that Roine Stolt and Jonas Reingold of The Flower Kings were guests in "The Place Where I Belong". Everything after the acoustic section sounds sooooooo Flower Kings-ish to me, especially the 2nd guitar solo. Somehow the guys still make it all work and sound like Riverside.

No particular speciality, I haven't baked for a while, but it's my training and profession - product development for baked products: yeasted, cake, biscuit, pastry - I'm lapsed now though!

tbh, I was concerned after hearing the 'single' - too 1980's pop for my taste, but the rest of the album is of high quality so concerns away. It is the best album of the year so far but as it's just the 24th Jan, I'd be disappointed if this was still top 10 by year's end. A number 12 or thereabouts, I reckon.
