Listening to THANK U NEXT For the First Time in 2020 

Imagine is a song that Ariana wrote in reference to her failed relationship with the late Mac Miller. At once she builds an image of ease, happiness and love with lyrics such as " Staying up all night, order me pad-Tai" "Me with no makeup, you in the bathtub". In painting this image of a beautifully simple relationship, Ariana centralises around the question "Why can't you imagine that?". Ariana and Mac failed to preserve their relationship because of Mac's substance abuse, she is simply showing him the life they could have had if he had believed in and fought for it rather than giving in to his demons.

her parents had a divorce when she was like 7-8 and she had to be put in therapy because of it. she didn't really have a relationship with her dad, or so we know of, when this song came out. she recently reconnected with her dad tho and has been posting pics with him every now and then of them together and he came to a few of ariana's shows during the sweetener/thank u next tour. now when she preforms thank u next, she changes the part about her dad.

Imagine is about her imagining a world where her and Mac where still together and he was still alive

7 rings has a deeper/darker meaning. It’s all about depression and trying to cover it up and cope using retail therapy, excess, drinking, etc. She made this whole album basically drunk (talks in interviews about how she doesn’t remember the process) and the album has a lot of songs about her unhealthy coping mechanisms with pain and loss. I get annoyed when people say it’s just a flex song when it’s actually a cautionary tale.

The last track was supposed to be "Remember", but it was scrapped because she said it was too emotional for her. "Remember" was actually teased in her "breathin" music video. Also, the song "BUWYG, I'm bored" can actually be interpreted as Ariana saying to her boyfriend "break up with your girlfriend (which is Ariana) cause I'm bored", which I think is hilarious!

fun fact: almost all of these songs were made while them being tipsy/drunk, especially 7 rings😉

Btw BUWYGIB is Ariana telling her boyfriend aka Pete to break up with her so that she can focus on herself. This is more apparent in the MV because in the end she goes for a woman that looks like her over a man. That's why she picked it for a closer, this album is about focusing on herself.

The entirety of Ariana Grande's Thank U Next album is underrated. Some of my favourite tracks are bloodline, in my head, nasa, needy, and bad idea. Her vocals are killing me slowly in the inside, and I don't think that's good. Nice reaction video, Caitlin! Keep it up!

Well originally, she would’ve finished the album, with a song that got scrapped called “reMeMber”, but she wasn’t ready for the world to hear it and replaced with a “fun” one. BUWYG, I’m bored was one that she just felt to put on there for fun and to not take music always too seriously. Nonetheless, great reaction! A fun thing about this album is that the background vocals are mostly by her best friends Victoria Monét and Tayla Parx (they produced and wrote a bunch of songs for ari in general and for this album)... ari has said that it makes the songs more special cuz her friends are in it with her, not only in production and I think that's pretty sweet

my interpretation for 7 rings, which might help go beyond flexing is that she’s basically exploring her vices that have helped her get through everything that has happened to her. she’s talking about retail therapy and she’s flexing but she’s also talking about how she’s relied on her money to cope. the song was written after she had a rough night. the next morning she brought her friends to tiffany’s and they had breakfast and got drunk off of champagne and bought all of her friends diamond rings. so while yes she’s flexing there’s a lot more to 7 rings than just a flex also in terms of NASA: i think one of the most noteworthy things about it besides that amazing bouncy beat is the way that she uses space puns to talk about needing space in a relationship so like “you don’t wanna leave me but i’m trying to self discover/keep me in your orbit and you know you’ll drag me under” as an example. and the way that she dubs the vocals for that line 😍

sweetener is personally a healing album. my great-grandma died and sweetener really did help me get back where I needed to be and I just love sweetener.

Sweetener took a WHILE to grow on me. The songs u don't really vibe with a still don't really vibe with but "God is a woman" "better off" "everytime"-- pretty top tier. Also "sweetener" does have a choreographed dance for her so that's a cute moment. Thank you next I feel is her best album (even after Positions)... it just hits different in all the right and painful and beautiful places⭐

re the thank u next lyric abt her dad: i think it was bc he was in the audience that night, and it was like the first time he and her mom had been at one of her performances together. so she didn't want the line that was shady abt him to be casting a shadow on the moment at all. part of me is like : own your life, if he wanted to be written abt with kindness he would have acted better, but also i understand moving on, forgiving, not creating a scene /tension when there doesnt need to be. (in theory- not in my own life lmao)
