This is an absolute masterpiece. Some of the most straight forward lyrics of any Yes album of the time. This song is based on "War and Peace" a book Jon Anderson was reading at the time. The build up towards war in the first section. There is a clear call to rise, join the military and action. Those who question the march to conflict are cast aside. The conflict in the second section. The tone in this section changes towards a darker as the horrors of war take hold. And when the war is over and peace returns. The beautiful and majestic "Soon". So War and peace in music. An extremely creative and remarkable sonic work to take you though the cycle of war to peace and the end part leads back into the start indicating a cycle. Hard to believe it is nearly 50 years old now. Just as relevant to today as the 70's and I suspect for hundreds of years to come. Do not worry for this song to be overwhelmed and mesmerised is a normal first reaction.

It's better to say "loosely based" on War and Peace, as it's more suited to the idea in a more general sense.

Yes's musical representation of Tolstoy's 'War and Peace' in 3 parts; The lead up to the battle, the battle itself and the aftermath. For the battle section, the guys raided a scrap metal yard to hang chunks of metal in a rack and pound the hell out of it. At the climax they pushed the whole thing over. Must have been a sight in the recording studio 😅 The third section 'Soon' is just about the most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard.

I love that story. Patrick Moraz is also playing an early version of a sampling keyboard which was a Mellotron with the original tapes replaced by custom made ones to trigger some of the sound effects. On the Yes Symphonic Live DVD in Amsterdam DVD from the early 2000's Jon Anderson also intros this song by saying it was inspired by then current news stories from the US and UK, mainly the winding down of the Vietnam War.

It really gets you pumped up and you get lost in the music. Before you know it your workout is half over. It's truly a masterpiece. Every note is just right. The musicianship is incredible. Then there's the voice of Jon Anderson and the meaning of the lyrics. It's just incredible and I hope more of the next generation discovers it.

Relayer was my introduction to Yes back in 1974/75. I thought it was mechanical, machine-like and robotic music. I struggled to describe it. `i lent a copy to my form teacher who commented on my school report that I 'had an advanced taste in music.' High praise indeed. It has remained my favourite Yes album. At the time I didn't know anything about Yes so couldn't put it into context. Hindsight shows it was a departure in many ways from their style, with jazz-rock/fusion influences and a blistering pace in places, not repeated on future albums. A one-off. It was mad, chaotic and weird, but tracks such as To Be Over recaptured the mellow almost folky style of Yes. That is perhaps my favourite of all Yes songs. This album has a very special place in my heart and personal history. Great to see you enjoying it.

Another thing to keep in mind is after this album, Yes took quite a long break for the members to release solo albums. Steve Howe - Beginnings (1975) Chris Squier - Fish Out of Water (1975) Alan White - Ramshackled (1976) Patrick Moraz - The Story of I (1976) Jon Anderson - Olias of Sunhillow (1976) Yes doesn't release a new album until Going For the One in 1977, which Wakeman returns for.

Second time of hearing your thoughts Jim, didn't leave a comment before, to hear this live is something that stays with you. Funny story :- Jon and Rick did a tour together, just the two of them and it was wonderful, a man in the audience who had been drinking kept calling out that he wanted "Gates of Delleriam, Rick had had enough and said to this idiot, "I have a piano Jon has his cuitar, do you see drums a bassist, do everyone a favour and sod off ". A huge cheer went up, in the break two very large men who appeared not to have necks took him away.

That "I feel like I've known this music forever" thing -- you're not alone. Yes' gift during this period was to create and develop themes that were either rooted in classical music, or on the other end of the scale melodies so naive they could be considered childlike. IMO that's what they learned from Paul McCartney and the Beatles: stick with relatively simple melodic ideas but make sure they are bulletproof and memorable. So when it's stripped down, Yes music often only SEEMS complex, but the underlying themes and ideas are almost childlike in their directness. The complexity usually comes in with the instrumental fireworks from Howe, Squire and the keyboards.

The guitar work reminds me why Steve was nominated as guitar player of the year so many in Guitar Player Magazine. His playing still makes my heart rate increase. The amazing thing is the COULD PLAY ALL THIS LIVE WITH NOTHING PRE RECORDED. You know if you were there. I'm lucky to be alive while such majestic music was being recorded. Funny you described YES in that way. Since the first time listened to a YES album in 1972, I've always thought of it as The Band Chris Squire Put Together to display his bass-playing & compositional inspirations. I think THE most essential factor in the band's success was the other band mates all realizing that they needed build the band's sound around Chris' Industrial-Melodic bass inspirations. With Bruford on board, the result was The Best "Rhythm Section" in the history of Progressive Rock. While I liked the Trevor Rabin version of YES ( _especially_ *I'm Running* ), I have to admit I wasn't as enthralled by what YES produced after Big Generator because it seemed Chris was trying to be more of a conventional bass player instead of making their songs his own. I'm sure I would have liked the Early YES without Chris' contributions, but his command of their early sound was *_special._* Complexity, compositional artistry, and _that _*_bass._* :) (Billy Sherwood is an excellent replacement for Chris, but I have to say that what I've heard from their latest album suffers from Billy & Steve NOT making the Bass The Dominant sound in the band. One man's opinion...)

I _really liked_ the "lead up" portion of this masterpiece, featuring a lot of melody, but also foreshadowing the repeated breaks they develop later on in the section (perhaps my favorite) where the soldiers head off to battle, full of noble aspirations and the early clashes with the enemy, but elan is maintained...up to the time when all hell breaks loose & there's nothing but the ugliness of battle. I've always found the "battle" section a bit overwrought on the effects, but I know they had to play "chaos" in order to set up the 1st of the 3 big "release" moments of the epic, each one of them done brilliantly. A very special composition...

What to say Jim, what to say. As you now know this is war, the conniving politicians, the battle, the aftermath. This music is special to me, not only because it's wonderful prog, but because my family got caught up in both world wars. Lost 3 uncles in the 1st, my grandfather lost his toes (frostbite) then got caught in a "friendly fire" rolling barrage. He survived, but was never mentally the same. He could not stand for snow or loud noises (the screaming came back too quick in his head). Then my father and mother both had bloody encounters (HE and flesh do not mix) in WW2. Put a pint into my dad and the war stories came tumbling out, from the silly to the terrifying to horrifying. So I finished this well-known piece almost in tears, lost in their stories and the experience. It means so much and is so real. Could FK have composed this? PS I think side 2 is better... love Sound Caser

(thankfully with a very hopeful ending). - for the sound effects in the war scene, they got sheet metal parts from the junkyard (I've read) - on their current tour, YES play the complete Relayer album, among others

In every Yes fan’s top 10 lie Close To The Edge, Gates of Delirium and Awaken. After that the lists diffuse. To me this track is their most poignant and avant-garde. I never grow tired of listening to it. The third part was released as a single called Soon. It loses an incredible amount without the rest of the song to set it up. That said, Soon Is probably one of the most beautiful pieces ever composed.

When this was written and recorded, the Vietnam War was still raging and even when it ended, it left massive scars on the psyches of young people on both sides of the Atlantic. So although it may have been inspired by War and Peace, I always considered it to be about Vietnam.

According to Jon Anderson, The Gates of Delirium, was a kind of aggressive reaction on his part to the criticism of Tales From Topographic Oceans, which many critics, even Rick Wakeman, felt was too pretentious and overblown. Also Jon said he was at the time very influenced by the intense jazzrock of Mahavishnu Orchestra, which was expressed on the track Sound Chaser. Patrick Moraz who wrote the intro to that track, was perfect for the sound of Relayer. Rick Wakeman, on the other hand, said he was pleased hearing Relayer as it showcased a direction he would'nt have gone himself. Both he and Keith Emerson were very impressed with the playing of Moraz, though they later said he mimicked some of their playing, which is a bit unfair as Moraz has his own unique style. There is an excellent (probably the best) live version of The Gates of Delirium on the Yesshows live album from Cobo Hall, Detroit 1976, with Moraz. Also the live footage from the Queens Park Rangers, London 1975, show them performing Gates of Delirium (though the sound was not that good, due to a loose cable on the first set).

@@simonal1989 The Symphonic Live version is great for a visual of the band, but the arrangement pales in comparison to the YesShows version. The energy and majesty of the YesShows version simply cannot be touched. Original lineup performing it in their youth while it was still new, and they are full of confidence. Original keyboard sounds, and Steve just goes off.
@simonal1989

@@markjacobsen8335 The production and mixing on Yesshows is a little out of whack and needed more finesse, which causes the music to suffer. The orchestra on Symphonic Live adds that little boost in certain phrases that couldn't be reproduced in 1976, really providing the oomph. Symphonic Live proves that you don't need to play thousands of notes, little is more. It's a superior recording.

I also have listened to Yes properly this summer. I found positively surprising that their music isn't as peculiar as I remembered. Maybe my taste has evolved. I also started to really admire the bass work of Chris Squire. On the other hand, though there is some masterpieces, I haven't found them as uniquely amazing as the true fans, but that's just my experience. For me the early Genesis is the thing in that sense. That being said, I want to make clear, that I do really enjoy Yes' music. Tormato and Drama are perhaps my favourite albums.

The higher tech-like effect is a combination of Patrick Moraz' keyboards and Steve Howe's then brand new guitar synthesizer. To add: the clattering sounds came from a fully stocked actual restaurant kitchen utensil rack Alan White brought into the studio. The last we heard of that was when he knocked it over by accident (the loudest and final clatter) and they decided to keep it in as is.

I was 16 when this was released and, as with Tales of Topographic Oceans, I was not prepared to listen to soooo much noise and pomposity. I could barely get through Close to the Edge at 14 so these were way over my head at the time. 20 years later, however, after listening to and enjoying jazz rock fusion bands like Mahavishnu , Return to Forever and Weather Report, I re-listened to both Tales and Relayer and still didn't appreciate Tales but had a new-found respect for Relayer. Good album and the favorite of many Yes fans (after Close to the Edge).

I've always felt that this album comes of as a rush job to me. The fact that they did not work in a real studio- but a trailer or something- did not help matters much. But Moraz shines on the two side 2 songs. Squire is brilliant on Soundchaser. The cover is my favorite Roger Dean painting.

I know you have read Tolstoy's "War & Peace." This is Yes's Take on that epic book and it's story.....Happy going into battle which you describe as "the eye of the storm" which is what war is like....then the war is over and everyone one both sides of that war or any war......must begin again. Yeah....This is why Yes wrote music to the story of War & Peace......However my take on it ....is that I think Yes wrote it to talk about "War" period or Storms in our lives as humans going through Life's journey.....and "soon" The Sun will lead us to a reason to Begin Again then time fresh and new without the turmoil of the Wars or Storms in our new existence. Yes always put a spiritual twist on things......for them....Love is the answer to all our problems and struggles to evolve to Celestial Beings. And they really express this philosophy on their album, "Going For The One." I am glad you enjoyed this album. Like many guys have expressed it make you want to cry.....because it is soooooooooooooooooooooooooo Excellent!!!!

At the end some people are rejoicing but it's bittersweet as victory is.
