When you crank it over, you need to hold down the air plunger on the carb. You can see it hop up and down when you crank the engine. Would have probably fired straight up, it gives a rich mixture for starting!

Thanks for your comment Jan. I found it a little bit tricky putting the decals on. Take your time and you will get it right. The radiator cooled d-types look great.
I just used emery cloth and then wet & dry. It does gradually go rusty again, despite me rubbing oil on it. Ideally I should clean it up, polish it and apply clear lacquer which would stop it going rusty between runs.
