Having owned Lister Corvette BHL 121 I wish to add to its History in South Africa, I have information not published on my attempts to restore the car to its original specification. It had a "Mcgurk?" 339 hillborn short stack fuel injection Corvette motor. Cast iron casing Close ratio (2.2 first T10 gearbox). Scintilla Vertex magneto, roller lifters and alloy flywheel. I seem to remember the diff housing was magnesium. Two ratios came with car. Girling AR alloy front and BR rear calipers. No handbrake linkage I recall. Twin SU pumps . I think it had a knobbly chassis as master cylinder mounting (unused) were under the drivers seat. 0 to 8000 chronometric rev counter driven off generator. Petrol tank above differential /de Dion rear end. It came to me with a "knobbly " type body in much altered form having ,I believe, been done in UK. ( Maurice Gomm was given to me by John Ewer) its air intake and mudguards were cut away before I got the car from Eric Glasby in Rhodesia. His son Bruce still has a collection of period racing cars ! John Love told me that he did not like the handling of this car! I got a local well known alloy bodywork specialist to try to recreate the knobbly bodywork. After consideration I contacted Len Pritchard of Williams and Pritchard who confirmed making the original Costin body. The fire damaged the bodywork as none of the fire extinguish's had been serviced at Roy Hesketh race track ( this was mid 1960,s remember!) . I think it was John Harper ? who loaned his Costin to Len to copy the Costin front and rear sections. . My apologies if I named the wrong person. The new body was duly shipped to Durban ,South Africa but was seriously damaged by shifting cargo en route.. My finances could accommodate this setback. I had been to see Phillip Renault in Paris who took me to a track where Listers were racing. When I told the Lister contingent I had a Lister they laughed. That is until I quoted Chassis BHL 121. silence !! So I only had bad luck with this car (which I loved drivng on the street and Hillclimbs after the fire) I had fitted a fibreglass front end adapted. So it never remained derelict in Africa. It was always my intention to restore to Costin but the odds were against me. so it had to go back to UK to repair the damaged sections of the NEW Costin front and rear. I had tried here in South Africa with no luck. I note with Dismay that it got short shift from Doug Nye,s Book but now is a "celebrity" prototype first Costin and worth R ?????
