The Consolations are a set of six solo piano works by Franz Liszt. The compositions take the musical style of Nocturnes with each having its own distinctive style. Each Consolation is composed in either the key of E major or D-flat major. E major is a key regularly used by Liszt for religious themes.
There exist two versions of the Consolations. The first (S.171a) was composed by Liszt between 1844 and 1849 and published in 1992 by G. Henle Verlag. The second (S.172) was composed between 1849 and 1850 and published in 1850 by Breitkopf & Härtel, containing the familiar Consolation No. 3, Lento placido, in D-flat Major.

I am a 76 year old retiree coming back to classical piano. In 1960 as a teenager I achieved a merit pass in Grade VIII of the ABRSM. Unfortunately lapsed about a year later, deciding not to pursue music as a profession.(Teaching). Five weeks ago I bought an electric piano keyboard & started up again, concentrating on scales & arppegios & have made good progress. Also slowly going through Schubert's Impromtu Op 90 No 4. Now, wanting to also start this piece, but I always had problems with rhythym, never mind polyrhythyms!!! I guess I know enough from the past to do without a teacher at this stage, but thank goodness for these tutorials on RU-vid.

Hi Stanislav. Your playing is exquisite. I play a little and love beautiful pieces, like Mendelssohn's Consolation. Chanson de Matin, some of Chopins pieces that are delicate, heart warming and soothing. Wish I lived next door to you. I live in Ireland. You have a lovely touch and a sensitivity which I just love. Thank you, your music is very much appreciated. Mervyn

I really love this piece. I see some similarities (at the octaves part) to Chopin's nocturne op 9 no 1. I read somewhere that this piece was dedicated to Chopin a year after his death. I would like to know, if you use the Sostenudo pedal for the D flat note?
