The song “Yo que soy contrabandista”, which comes from Manuel García’s tonadilla El poeta calculista, enjoyed wide popularity throughout the nineteenth century and became one of the stereotypes of Spanish music in Europe during the Romantic period. Liszt used its melody in his Rondeau fantastique S 252, an early work of dazzling virtuosity that the pianist dedicated to George Sand, who wrote her story Le contrabandier after hearing it.
Manuel García: Yo que soy contrabandista, de El poeta calculista
Franz Liszt: Rondeau fantastique sur un thème espagnol ("El contrabandista") S 252
Leslie Howard, piano & Laia Falcón, soprano

Is this a simplified version of S.252?

I am not quite sure right now, but I assume that this is the original song composed by Manuel Garcia, which Liszt composed his S.252 from. Don't take me for granted, again, I'm not sure

@@CatkhosruShapurrjiFurabji I think you're right, actually. It would seem likely... though the original zarzuela seems rather obscure and I'm not sure how the sheet music would be prepared and transcribed.

@@therealrealludwigvanbeethoven, it was not a _zarzuela_ but an opera.
@therealrealludwigvanbeethoven
@@robert111k You seem to be correct; I don't remember where, but the term "zarzuela" was employed in some source to describe Garcia's work. That appellation appears to have been poorly---and incorrectly---ascribed.

Actually - instead of Valentina Lisitsa's record - there are mistakes and the tempo isn't constant. Still great work.

Tempo shouldn't be constant, he follows the score.

Try to put in account that he’s *sightreading one of the technically hardest liszt pieces in a concert* Lisitsa’s performance is a mere studio recording.
@norixsynth

Also there are mistakes because he sight-read and played it for the first time in one concert :)

@@lisztomani4c What makes you think he is sightreading it? :) This was obviously a carefully planned concert, they even prepared a performance of the original aria with a soprano. In addition, it is utterly inconcievable that Leslie Howard (or any performer) would disrespect an audience by showing up unprepared and try winging a piece like El Contrabandista. Also, he recorded this piece for the Liszt complete edition decades ago, so sight-reading is out of the question by definition. It is actually a remarkably shaky performance by the standard of an accomplised concert pianist. All the younglings in the 2017 Liszt Competition in Utrecht managed to do it more justice than Howard in this recording. He is still a genius though, just had a bad day at the office.

@@lisztomani4c you are underestimating studio recording stress ... I personally have more problems recording properly in a studio setting than I have performing live.
