The Trois morceaux suisses are the revisions of the three Paraphrases which formed the third book of the original Album d’un voyageur. The first piece, based on Swiss composer Ferdinand Huber's version of the cowherds’ traditional Ranz de vaches (there is simply no cognate for ‘ranz’ in English: it is the generic title of the melodies improvised by Swiss herdsmen-whether of cows, as in this piece, or of goats, as in the third-played on the alpenhorn or sung), is a series of free variations on the theme heard at the beginning. The second paraphrase, with the title Un soir dans la montagne (An Evening on the Mountain) uses a yodelling song melody by the Swiss cellist, composer and publisher Ernest Knop, and includes a dramatic storm, as alpine weather deteriorates. The third of the set, an exciting Rondeau, is based on Huber’s version of the goatherds’ Ranz de chèvres. By turns turbulent, delightful, playful and unabashedly virtuosic, it strongly concludes the set.

18:31 -- Ranz de chèvres

What I find sincerely amazing in this channel, beyond the obvious gratitude for uploading rare jewels of a genius whose most people know only a dozen popular stuff, is the abundance of thorough and accurate notes even about minor pieces, a few obscure even to experts. It'd be a benchmark for others. I mean: there are so many great channels posting unsung music but very few proffer more than couple of tiny words and sometimes even just nothing. Thus .... Double gratitude for music and history behind it.

One of the reasons I love Liszt's music is how he is able to make a straightforward progression by fourths sound otherworldly mysterious: from 7:35 we just have B-Major-B-minor going to F#-Major-F#-minor to C#-Major-C#-minor to A-flat(enharmonic G#)-Major-A-flat-minor to E-flat-Major-E-flat-minor to B-flat-Major - and only then do we get a somewhat exotic shift to D-Major. Yet the whole section sounds like as if it was some sort of crazy mediant progression. Incredible.

And this is why he was the best composer ever

This part sounds like out of context to me, like he cut it out from a different composition and pasted it there. I like Liszt's first experiments - the Un soir dans la montagne is charming - but his greatest pieces come later.

Mr. Jean Dubé's tempo for the second piece is correct, in the first edition there are metronome indications. The main theme is really lovely and atmospheric. The original version is in the 3rd book of the Album d'un voyageur called Paraphrases.

Is he playing with the William Tell theme here? Or is that just a well known Swiss motif?
