Psychedelic Baroque Jazz...still amazing after 55 years!!!

The organ is a Vox Continental. The sound of so many 60’s groups - Doors, Animals, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Dave Clark 5, Question Mark & the Mysterians, some early Beatles and Stones, others. Elvis Costello also used it in the 70’s. Hot orange case, reverse color black and white keys - totally unique appearance and sound. Psychedelic, searing, and just a bit of carnival.

Doors did this song live on the Ed Sullivan show. Producers objected to the line, girl we couldn't get much higher (suggesting drugs to producers). Doors management agreed to drop the line but Jim Morrison would have nothing of it. When they performed the song live on national TV, Morrison leaned into the camera and sang, girl we couldn't get much higher. Sullivan banned Doors from future appearances, but don't judge Sullivan too badly. He was responsible for promoting popular African American music on national TV in the 60s. A big deal back then.

Later someone said to Morrison, you'll never be on this show again. He replied something like, that's ok. I already did it. 😉 He got play on National TV.

I am glad you did this song. It was the Doors first hit song, and it was a mega hit. But glad you didn't do the hit version, which was shortened for AM radio (of the day). The hit version removed all that delicious instrumental. This was the album version and great it was, made for FM radio. Manzarek is playing the organ here. This is such a great song!

FYI- the same instrument that provides the church music sound also provides the bass line; that is Ray Manzarek, organ player, playing bass line with foot pedals.They did not in fact, have a bass player in the band, although later on they did occasionally use a session player on some album cuts, I believe.

You have a good ear… doors had a unique hybrid sound that was singular and influential. All of them were indeed jazz steeped , even morrison from a beat and Sinatra live background. They’re underrated and get knocked too much by snarky critics and snobs. They were inconsistent b/c of morrison. A true wild card who when off could be a train wrec. Plus he was over marketed as a guru sex god and was distracted in being conflicted w/ that bordering on parody. But when he was dialed in, wow, they were a juggernaut w/ really no one in their zip code of originality and eerie power. Morrison sounds like prime Sinatra on peyote.

Ray made that bass line by playing a Fender Rhodes Bass electric piano with his left hand, as he played the melody on a Vox Continental Organ with his right hand. And, by the way, this is one of my favourite songs of all time. And, if you can, please catch Jose Feliciano doings an acoustic version of this song on acoustic guitar. Its great.

THE DOORS, "LIGHT MY FIRE". This was the first hit song. Can you imagine the a.m. radio stations cut this song to a 3 minute song. They actually cut the Keyboardist Ray Manzarek, Robbie Kreuger Guitarest, and John Densmore Drummer mid song jam session. Ironically the bass line was played by Manzarek on the organ. Crazy as it is Jim Morrison had originally sing with his back to the crowd. Another example of young men who become professional in 1967...🔥

Biz, Jim Morrison was a straight up poet who wrote some amazing lyrics. Not so much this song, but as you hear more of their work you get a sense of how talented he was. Died way too young. The entire band is fire for that matter. By the way, no bass player in the band.. the person playing the organ, Ray Manzarek, is playing the bass line with foot pedals while he’s playing the organ.
@keef7224
@keef7224 2 года назад
Two things: definitely not Jim’s best poetry on this song, since he didn’t even write it. This was guitarist Robby Krieger’s song. Also, Ray didn’t play the bass lines with foot pedals (the way Geddy Lee sometime does with Rush, for example). He actually mostly played the bass lines on a Fender Rhodes piano bass keyboard with his left hand, while playing the Vox organ with his right hand. Mainly this was only done in concert, as they would more often use an actual session bass player in the studio.
@gesundheit602
@gesundheit602 2 года назад
@@keef7224 That’s why I said not so much this song. Ray did play some of the bass lines with his left hand, he also played some with foot pedals as well.

Funny listening to this again, my recollection at the time this came out (yes I was at least old enough to listen to it) was everyone talking about Jim Morrison's vocals and sexuality, but listening today (and hearing your commentary) this is a beginning and an end with Jim with a long middle of jamming solos just showing off the other musicians (like a jazz song!). Sort of reminds me of the song (structure) Blue Sky by the Allman Brothers.

The Doors were one of the greatest bands of all time. No, they didn't have a bass player. The bass lines were played (almost) exclusively by Ray Manzerik on his organ. But some songs had to be played with a bass guitar. So "John Sebastian" played the basslines on guitar. He only played live behind the curtain to avoid being recognized because "The Doors" would have thrown negative press at him at the time. He also didn't want to be mentioned on their albums. I wish you would comment on some of their rarer tracks like "Maggie McGill" or "When The Music`s Over" or "The End". The latter are a bit long but still worth listening to. Best wishes @all from hamburg (germany).
