This will go under the radar for being so underrated

I would 100% come back to underlords if it got an update or even a player base around the times i play

I've been playing this game ON MOBILE, it completely cook my device, but i really like it. I did 2 days game of underlord back then and when i realized im addicted to it, i stop. It's a 9/10 for me since no more update.

Dota Underlords was my first autochess game ever played and I love it so much since it came from Dota 2. I think it has a lot of potential and I hope you can reach some kind of agreement with Valve since I'm sure you're more than capable of handling this.

Not sure if you touched on this but the development of underlords stopping was very sad due to the fact that its been reported its season "2" content had been ready to ship with some sort of dungeon mode (and the underlords hitned via flavor text) but valve decided to only dump the units in 2020 and called it done.

I agree that having an Underlord ruins the fantasy that I'M the Underlord. I have roughly the same problem with Magic; Yes, there can be "more than one planeswalker" but I used to be THE planeswalker.

I started playing it when it first released. I didnt really play that consistently for 2 years and after 5months of the big patch i stopped it completely and totally forgot about it. It would actually be a blessing if you get recruited by Valve. Really looking forward to it Baumi!

I played underlords recently too, after a couple year haiatus. I pray someone from valve sees this and takes your pitch seriously. I love this game, the autochess genre in general is very fun and the market is obviously huge, especially an autochess related to dota with the existing dota audience. Underlords just somehow doesnt live up to its potential, and i think youve identified pretty much every reason why in this video. Someone with your insights, game knowledge, and experience with game design, would do an absolutely incredible job of improving underlords. I really hope they take you seriously, and dont let their ego get in the way and scoff at the thought that you could do a better job than them. As a player who enjoys this game, all i want to see is a good, fun, playable game, I really hope that valve understands this and sees the potential in you that I see to make underlords exactly such a game.

I think one thing that should take in to consideration is how players switch from pc games to mobile games, especially the players from SEA. At that time, a mobile moba, MLBB, was dominating moba games market on mobile and gained attention of hundred of millions of people, in SEA region alone. Simplicity, mobilility and less match duration gives players flexibility to choose time to play. Because of the popularity, even some SEA DOTA pros switched to the new market. And then, in 2019, Moonton released an auto battler on their own version, but didn't do well as what they're expecting. On January 2020, they choosed to shut the game down. And introduced it back as an arcade in MLBB, named Magic Chess on March 2020, unchanged. The mode was well accepted that the game feels like divided by two, and tournaments were being held everywhere in SEA. Based on the rankings, i believe total number of players in Indonesia alone was about 600.000 players. It uses battle pass and other micro transactions for board skin, commander skin, and some others to fund the game maintenance. And, seasonal patch usually ruins the players number too, some people are just not comfortable changing what they're used to do.

The original auto chess makers are probably World of Warcraft players. The meepo model was based on the kobold, idk why tf it is a mech unit but Leshrac was modeled on the Keeper of the Grove whose son mated with the earthen elemental lord to sire the centaurs. Marci is a monk because she uses martial arts and no weapons or magic and Monks in WoW do that. Brewmaster is based on Chen Stormstout the traveling pandaren monk who was an easter egg in the WC3. They didn't make shit up, they just copied. And nagas get magic resistance because maybe they were Highborne, the magic wielding elves corrupted by the pact of their queen, Azshara.

If you are the underlord, maybe a way to customise appearance and abilities (like in LOL how they select flash etc). Could still use the 4 existing underlords as base models etc for it.

Underlords do things, my favorite is enyo with stun all ult ability. This works with poisoner setuo since he gives poison stacks. Generally hes just good cc and you tunnel ur units for dps. Annessixs is morr on summoner builds. The tusk dude is tank if ur front line is weak. The fire dude is dps if ur doing heavy tank front line. They compensate for what your lacking. Imo, add underlords that fills a synergy bar. Since they do have distinct builds that can work around them. Adding more and the underlord u get is based on the 4 highest synergies you have active and their abilities pivot in that synergy. On the fantasy talk, i think its unfair that you position yourself as the underlord as often enough depictions of projection embodies the underlord. An underlord by concept is a projection of you as the underlord. Video games is all about taking control of a unit and having control over it. In rpg games you design the character you play. In dota you play a unit from a pool of heroes and thats the same core concept there you have control over this unit and can be translated or perceived this way as well. Imo, the underlord concept is just weak and not explored. Its a defining core mechanic in the auto battler genre.

Man i missed this game I used to love playing meepo and give him refresher orb If i remember correctly if you get him to 3 starts hi clones can also use items So in result each meepo uses the refresher then summon their own clone, which in result creates a loop of summoning a meepo

Hey @Baumi, I agree with you on the Underlords stuff, but I still feel very fun to be able to select a special kind of skill that permeates all the heroes and that goeas beyond what a single hero could do. I play atomic war very much and from my perspective I think It would be cool if, in a certain point of the game, we could "elect" a hero to be kind of a "captain" of the team, and then the whole team gets a special skill depending on that captain. The captain should maybe still be in the fight. Then, we could as well call a new election to change this captain, for some amount of gold, after some amount of time. Of course this would take a lot more work since the designers and developers would have to implement a different skill and flavour for each available hero when It gets the captain status. What do you think of this?

I have some opinions on the statements/topics that came up during the vid : >if the game is called dota UNDERLORDS there is a certain premise that goes along with that. The Underlord is very important to the core of this mode+design. Should it be a unit on the battlefield? That's debatable. There are not enough of these Underlords to make it feel like a random cornerstone for your team build. For example TFT has Augments as a choice instead of these underlords. (possible solution: make a lot more underlords so the choice is a skill choice or change up what picking a Underlord dose(Augments?) >more Dota lore accurate abilitys/traits is another point. If this game/mode has its own theme it might not a bad idea to change things up from the expected Dota lore. This was the first iteration next release is Dota Underlords 2.0 "classic" and you stuff everything that fits the lore in there. Dota Underlords 3.0 can follow a complete different theme. >re-roll meta needs some shake ups. its cool to have special milestones when you have a 3star XY but its a good idea to open up other viable strategy paths (high end shop, somehow buff your Underlord with units so its in 'boss' mode etc) (changing stuff is a good idea but how much resources do you have at hand to even implement/make these changes? if they abandoned the developer abandoned the mode there is a lack of work-power to make a lot of drastic changes. think of a solution for that case)

I think you'd kill it in Underlords. I like items, they make for exciting power increases. Maybe unlocking a 3 star super early to then wait and investing into a powerful item for them. Like Pudge and Heart Of Tarrasque, 46:50 you skipped over vlads earlier in the game, it's definitely one of the best items for max assassins. Bonus armour, lifesteal and damage increase in a 2 cell aura.

Personally, I think instead of making ranked itself a pay to win sort of thing, you could do something akin to Clash in league of legends. Bi-weekly or however long tournaments that you can enter based on your rank, and the winners of the tournament are awarded a bunch of ingame cosmetics or icons to show off how theyve won those tournaments. Would attract players looking to show off much like your "pay for ranked" thing, would attract many players together to all hop on at the same time weekly which can help keep a consistent playerbase and attract new players, and also is less likely to piss players off than purely "you have to pay to play ranked".

Game 1 you HAD the option of lifesteal in Vlad's haha. It's not a LOT but 10% lifetseal is better than none, especially on assassins

Compared to magic chess from mlbb, they have updates every 3 months thats how they keep players hooked to the game. Problem with underlords is they abandoned the game. No updates. Nothing. And it’s amazing all baumi ideas are there in mlbb magic chess

Idea for monetisation - battle pass for additional battle options (strange/silly/interesting modifiers to the field/units/economy). This will bring up interest of everybody. Basically you can call it an expansion idk

At 36:56, you say "why does dota do that? Yes. yes. apart from warcraft 3" and like... Dota has been a game for probably longer than Warcraft 3 was supported by Blizzard, or at least basically the length of time (don't shoot me over this, I can't find exactly when Blizzard stopped supporting WC3). Anything Dota does at this point, is a conscious choice that Valve is actively making.

NGL I don't hate the idea that battle pass lets you play ranked... that doesn't sound awful.

With the arcade monetization ban, Dota underlords would definitely seem to be something that could become the p2w game mode that valve would want Baumi to do if they even hire him to reform it. Sadly, just dont seem how dota underlords could be the big success when you have to listen to Valve's demand. (Just look at this shitty frostivus event we have now) Well, still do hope that Baumi gets to do it cause it would seem fun and a breathe of fresh air as compared to TF2.

Subscription models to me are totally fine, my issue with subs these days is that ON TOP of the subscription they still have all the toxic whale-hunting. Look at modern day World of Warcraft... It used to be you just pay the sub you play the game, and every year or 2 you buy a new expansion and play that. And then they added a store with, initially, utility services like server transfers, race changes, etc. That was fine to me, I didn't really care. Then the store got mount skins and other goodies, and over time the store just got more and more of the cool items while the stuff you earn in-game never really got the flashy things. It sucks.

With the subscription model in Underlords you could really easy fix the problem with people feeling forced to play and they are feeling bad when they cant find the time. Just let them choose what kind of subscription they want: 1. Paying for unlimited amount of ranked matches in a set time. 2. Paying for set amount of ranked matches in an unlimited time. Lets say 100 matches could cost the same as one month subscription. If someone have a lot of free time and play on average more then 3-4 matches every day, they buy normal monthly subscription... but if someone have only time for 0-2 matches per day, they could just buy 100 games for the same money and it would last them 2-4 months without any bad feeling for playing too low.

Comparing it to TFT, the underlords are nicer in some things but cleary not all. Comination wise its poor. There is lot of work to be done.

I have to say that I disagree with Baumi. Underlords don't have to go. It needs a change, yes, but they don't have to go. From my point of view choosing an underlord defines my playstyle and the fantasy is that I am roleplaying that style of "underlording". About defining my playstyle, I can choose before the game how I want to play, which can be good. As a person who's interested in game design and have done something, I unfortunately don't agree w Baumi.
