Who said poetry is the mother of lies? Plato apparently believed that poetry is the mother of lies because in his opinion poetry deals with illusion rather than reality. However, popular poetry was different in Plato’s day that in ours. In Plato’s day poetry was often performed in fanciful plays and stories that might be compared to TV sitcoms today. Plato was a philosopher and in his famous work the Republic he claimed that “there is an old quarrel between philosophy and poetry.” Not everyone agrees with Plato. For instance the great Welsh poet Dylan Thomas said: “A good poem helps to change the shape and significance of the universe, helps to extend everyone’s knowledge of himself and the world around him.” But again, Plato may have been thinking of poetry differently than we do today. He may have been thinking of fanciful tales in which “gods” and “fates” determined the destinies of human beings, rather than their rational thinking and actions. It isn’t difficult to understand why a philosopher like Plato would have preferred facts and logic to fairy tales.
