I can understand people's reactions, but based on the comments, it seems as though a lot of people don't understand what they're doing. This is a homage to late '70s/early '80s post punk and NYC no wave, where the smooth flow and major chords of dance music are replaced by harsh transitions and cold, minor keys for a jarring effect-it's angular robot funk. Listen to Bush Tetras, Contortions, ESG, Dinosaur L, Jack Ruby, Liquid Liquid, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, and, as many people have noted, Suburban Lawns, to get an idea of where they're coming from. You might not like it, but they're actually doing a great job of accomplishing what they're trying to do.

Interesting. I just barely discovered them on Henry Rollins' show on KCRW, where he typically plays an eclectic mix of punk and what not from the '70s until now. When I heard LITHICS on his show, I automatically assumed he was playing something from the late '70s-early '80s period, simply because of the feel and arrangement. I was surprised that they were a contemporary band. Cool stuff.

It's one of my favorite bands of all time. I have all their materials, on CD, vinyl and cassette. I love those sharp and cold riffs, the technicality of the drums and the deadpan voice of the leader.

Had to hi5 on AOR. Still my favorite band ever. AOR is the only rocktype band I know of to completely strip away all cliches of rocktype music and invent something entirely original. I love lithics but you can clearly hear influence. Arab on Radar had their own stage movements, their own guitar sound: clean tone, overdriving a tweeter cabinet: clean distortion. I personally love that Lithics have been basically described as amateur and untrained in music rules...AOR, thats just a bunch of noise. The joke is both on and lost by those listeners. When playing live they consistently perform note for note or half or wrong note recreations of their recorded work. These people are great musicians. They're doing us all a favor by providing an escape from clone music..even amongst the paint by weird numbers clones in their own genre. Just go check out AOR on 31G, their release on that label vs every other band on that label. Stark.

Well, friend, I'm actually not unfamiliar with Minutemen and Fugazi. It's pretty funny how this kind of stuff gets people comparing you to such great bands as Fugazi and Talking Heads. I have a pretty close point of reference for this: playing and improvising with people who do not really know what notes belong in what scales. The only thing they can is either play a random basic chord progression (check) or rhythmically pick single notes that don't fit at all in the musical context (check). I know it's not right to look at it only from a musicianship perspective rather than like a piece of music, but it gives you a pretty strong clue that there isn't any grand plan.
