I am Lithuanian, today we expected this victory, because we are analyzing USA all games on this FIBA 2023 World Cup. And i am sorry to day, but this USA team is not a Dream Team as was before, but anyways USA guys awake on 3thrd quarter and began to show better game. Good luck with Italy and hope next time your NBA best players will come for next Championships and beat all Teams. But if we see historicly Lithuania won against USA 2 times and today it was 3thrd. But the best competition it was on 2004 Olimpyc games in Athens. When you had the best players and you lost against Lithuania. Good luck and greetings from Lithuania.

I am lithuanian, but I cant agree what you just said. We were expecting to lose this game, as most experts said its better to rest players and get better oppoent- Italy, not Serbia. In 2004 usa didn't had the best players, because these legends were rookies.

Yes, we did expect to lose, but no one ever talked about picking Italy over Serbia because that happened after we won. Only granmas and couch "experts" talk that 😂 but yea, coach Kazys said that he planned to equalize minutes among the team. Props to the whole coaching staff of Lithuania - massive homework done, plan drawn up, and players went nuts om executing. I couldn't believe my eyes in first quarter 😂 but I also think this is a wake up call for USA and they will smash from now on - happened before 😅

Americans have a tendancy to emphasize the "foreign, overseas" aspect of international basketball, like it's a different sport, they do not feel NBA basketball is a part of a larger community of basketball players and fans all over the world. I think it's a conscious effort of the NBA brand to appear separate, changing rules, different court size, a different culture. Some US NBA fans seem baffled that one can enjoy basketball that is outside of the NBA, as if any competition that isn't the best level doesn't matter and isn't worth supporting. The way american consume sport is also very specific to their domestic leagues, with constant attention to individual statistics, "goat" debates, lists of best players, fantasy leagues, the draft, trades.. All of this is very weird to outsiders, as "normal" basketball is similar in its organization to soccer, with local clubs, prestigious teams, and of course, national teams with their supporters. The NBA wants to be a global brand, but basketball already exists outside of it, so it will have to adapt, or try to takover FIBA and other leagues, and that won't go smoothly, the cultural difference in how we enjoy sports are too great. The recent debate clearly showed that.

So far it's very interesting underdog story. I m lithuanian and last year we had quite solid team, 2 good nba players and some really good Euroleague players, even our local team had good results. But in Eurocup we couldnt win anything. This year many refused to play due to some interesting reasons. When I saw the current roster I didin't know there these players play and many were sus of they abilities. I know usa had more talent, and in a series they would win, but today lithuanians showed a lot of heart. What's more, our baskeball news experts and all the fans believed its better to lose, as Italy shouldnt be as strong as serbia in the next round

Lithuanian coach was incredibly pleased with himself because he beat Steve Kerr. He is one that does not SIT - he jumps and shouts and worries for his players. Lithuanian coach used to coach Lithuanian kids through european and world kids championships, when some of these adult players were kids he was their coach. He knows some of the players since they were 10 years old, he loves them like he's their father. Steve Kerr never had a chance 😅

I love that Valančiūnas is getting to show off his skill in this championship. I think European players sometimes get underwhelming results in the NBA because NBA coaches dont know how to use European player skillsets. Europeans play as a TEAM, Americans like to be stars, so players always think about their own stats first, team is second.

I actually agree there are some overseas studs coming to the A this year and I’m bracing for the disappointment of them to not be used correctly. The nba has definitely become more of a show than anything hence why I enjoy overseas ball a lot more at times. It is verrrrrry team based overseas all day everyday but in the nba it depends or wait until playoffs and etc. Very good observation my friend!

America would never lose to any national team if they played by the rules of the NBA. Denver would also have trouble playing by FIBA rules. Jokic, Giannis and Doncic have repeatedly stated that it is much more difficult to score a basket in the European league than in the NBA, and none of the three won a medal at the last European Championship. Rest assured that American basketball players are trying very hard to play their best. There is no shame in losing to Lithuania, Serbia or Spain.

why would they play by the rule of a specific national league in international competition? Most other leagues have FIBA rules, it's the NBA that wants to changes some to create a different product, why should the rest of the world be imposed those changes?

Dude, kudos to you for educating your fellow Americans. Folks over there should pay more attention to Euroleague level talent. I know a lot of people in US think there is only domestic leagues in Europe, in fact there is the second best basketball league in the world, it’s EuroLeague. Americans think overseas is equal everywhere like there is no difference in talent level between EuroLeague and some second division Spanish league or China’s basketball league etc. It’s crazy to think so and there is a nice field to broaden their mind about the game. BTW Brazdeikis played in Magic and Knicks, also G league, Sirvydis in Pistons and G league, Kuzminskas in Knicks, Jokubaitis is drafted by the Knicks, DMO Motiejūnas played in Rockets, Pelicans and Spurs, J.Valančiūnas played in Toronto Raptors, Grizzlies and Pelicans :D

Lithuania players before important game watches movies like "300" (this movie is about a Spartan king leading 300 warriors against an overwhelming force of Persian invaders) Thats how players are energized and pumped up before the game :) this is no secret, we do it since 2010 world cup where we win 3rd place and bronze medals This was one game,not a serie, in both team playing only humans, you have 40 minutes to destroy your enemy. Thats how things work, hard work always beats talent. You just can not bet everything on talent. You need be focused,motivated, do hard training. Last night there wouldnt be any team in the world that could beat Lithuania, those players play as hard as any can play and they wish to win this game was bigger than any can imagine. They are underdogs, before tournament, even Lithuania media people, fans dont believed in our team. Those things motivates our players, and Lithuania are like phoenix, coming back to basketball powerhouse.

With all the respect to nba team. Euroleague team vs nba team would a very close in true basketball rules i.e. FIBA. Definitely nba has better players, but fiba game is all about the team, not the individuals.

Your take on Kerr is actually damn good. I've just finished watching the semis against Germany, and while being a european guy and kinda rooting for Germany, during last 3-4 minutes of the game I was almost yelling at Steve, cuz bro was doing anything but coaching. Let's assume you are a coach of a team, your guys are down by 6 with a bit over a minute and a half left on the clock with 2 team fouls. Every damn coach I know would yell at the players to foul and go into free throw game, but "why should we" Steve said calmly and proceeded to do no such thing, no subs, nothing. For some absurd reason the US decided to foul once and then it was almost like the concept of exchanging free throwas for extra possessions just magically disappeared from their heads. I'm more disappointed at this coaching then I'm happy for Germany.

I agree with you, i feel like its American coaches in general, where they are very passive and not controlling. European coaches, especially our Lithuanian coach who is one of the best coaches in Europe right now, always on his feet, always shouting, always playing out strategies. He literally got a technical in this game, he's vocal which allows the players to listen and shows that the coach cares. Steve Kerr is not a good coach, and overall alot of the American coaches and their staff are nowhere near close to european coaches. Hopefully this changes. I feel like Americans care alot about the name of players and not the character of players, Steve Kerr is chosen because of his name and who he coaches rather than what kind of coach he actually is. Same as players, people may say if they had this and that players they would of won, this is never a 100% possibility. (Plus keep in mind, this lithuanian team is also missing 5 of their main roster players.)

Even the refs tried to make it into a close game with some very questionable foul calls all throughout the game. It's just the team beat the group of individuals. Lithuania scored 110 with their top scorer having 15 points and 10 players in double digits.

My opinion is just preparation for the game. As most of European basketballs teams scout opponents, try to find weaknesses and use them. We can't outrun USA talents 1vs1. There is to much respect for all players, so there is scouting, risks, team helps.

The mere fact that you are a part of NBA, people thought that once you are called as NBA player, instantly people think NBA players are chosen because they are best of the best around the world, regardless of their ranking in the NBA. But reality, It’s different in internationa basketball, FIBA rules are different too, It’s more physical. I guess it’s it not their luck. And it’s gonna be more exciting for team USA to face Italy, knowing banchero chooses team than italy team to play with. 😅

The problems with USA are clear now and they will get back into the finals no doubt. First they need to do homework on who they are playing against, Steven Kerr and his crew needs to do research. Second, they need to accept its not NBA, its different basketball there. Third, poor starting five and they need to work on the defense. As a Lithuanian I'm proud we won but I think we haven't seen true USA and no doubt they will return with a vengeance for us in the finals if we can make it.

Got to consider that for many European it's much better to play 30-40 games a year in Europe and cash out a veteran minimum amount or like300k and have longevity. I was always told if you want to respect the opponent beat them with as much as you can, always put out what you can

Not sure if you can blame USA for the game, great game fot Lithuania and you should remember that playing vs European teams is like watching NBA playoffs as European teams defend like hell. 100 points vs European team is an achievement... But I love how hot Lithuania is in last few games, shootings better from 3PT than 2PT two games in a row 😅

Sorry, but thats not the point....all over the world, the WC is seen as a national competition between countries....and not teams...but it feels like most americans hide themselves behind their NBA teams, what would the nuggets be without Jokic, Murray aso...and its beyond the point, and normally no european team would win against the nuggets, but in europe, with european fans....I wouldnt be too sure!

Sad to say to you but there is no proof of that . For example if I say majority of the time we do very well in FIBA. You can look up the record and see this to be true. It seems your doing the same things as ignorant Americans your underestimating your opponent. Also your generalization of Americans being arrogant is very silly especially if you don’t know many. We found comfort attacking Reaves, everybody did. That's why he got 5 fouls. We always prepare who we attack more ,and who gonna leave more on defense. Our worst player had best season game today against Reaves. Also we were taller and won boards by a lot.

Exactly that’s why I’m upset at other people stating. “It’s just one game” like have some pride! If we’re supposed to be the best of the best with the “stars” and “potential” stars we shouldn’t lose right? Wrong coaches chemistry and much more play a part which is why I can’t be mad at Lit they balled out for real.
