[SOLD] This Little Big Boat was my #1 pick in my BoatFools Top 10 Sailboats for Sale in Maine Under $25,000. Something about this sailboat really struck me and I wanted to go see her for myself. She's a classic Chuck Paine design and was built in the UK and while just 30 feet overall, she feels like a much larger sailboat. Only 50 VICTORIA boats were made. However, her build year is a little murky as some sources say the VICTORIA wasn't built until 1986; other sources say she was designed in 1979 and first built in 1982... Go figure. She does have a sister ship, the Chuck Paine designed/Morris built, LEIGH. They are nearly identical. Only 19 of these were built (in Maine, as Morris Yachts). This VICTORIA has completed THREE trans-Atlantic crossings so to say she is seaworthy is an understatement. She can go anywhere.
Anyway, the seller/owner agreed to have me down to take a first-hand look. Having never been on a VICTORIA or a LEIGH, I was truly excited and she exceeded my expectations. The build quality was evident everywhere I looked. However, I did find two trouble spots both on the starboard topside - worthy of a qualified surveyor's attention. But not deal-breakers, IMO. The boat was listed as "fair" - and I would agree with the assessment but there is a lot to like and at $18,500 and with a little investment of time, DIY efforts, and likely a little money, you'd have yourself a boat worth twice that amount. These are highly regarded, hard to find boats. There are only two other active listings I could find, one in the UK and one in the US, one listed in the high $20ks and the other in the high $30ks.
This VICTORIA would be an ideal coastal and blue water cruiser - for a couple or a small family. She's also ideal for solo sailing and the seller/owner often did just that.
The seller's contact information is: travelingkc@gmail.com
Enjoy!

I had a Victoria 30 built for me in 1982 and sold it in 1992. Sailed it on launch from Southampton directly to the Mediterranean via Atlantic to my port Puerto de la Duquesa in Spain, near Gibraltar. Two years later sailed it to the Greek Islands and Turkey. Great boat in a stiff breeze, would stand up to any weather, but basically a slow boat. Although very pretty, the canoe stern has some drawbacks. Lack of buoyancy in a big following sea and lack of storage.

That's definitely a nice boat, but there were a couple things that i noticed during your tour. There is some significant wear around the hatchway in the main salon (9:15) and what looked like some type of tape around the perimeter of the sill. I also noticed some streaks of rust in the storage area behind the starboard settee when you moved the cushion (rusting chain plates?), which might explain the filthy bilge. Considering the teak decks, rust along the inside of the hull, and dirty bilge it is possible that the blue tarp is keeping the water out currently. As you said in the video, i think a survey would be a must on this one. The sailboat data on this model is pretty good though, definitely worth consideration.

Based on what I was told she’d been left uncovered for awhile. That plastic had just been put on. So, it was clear some water had gotten in likely through the hatch that may not have been properly closed. That rust staining in the storage may have been from the jib track, not the chainplates (which a farther forward relative to that compartment). But, a good survey would help locate the issue. Thank you for watching and for your comments!

Nice boat. Teak decking looked great, no fastener popping from what I could see. 4.58 draft so basically a shoal draft, nice. Good numbers on comfort and capsize. Little light on horsepower if it is an 8hp yanmar. Sweet boat, thanks for the tour.

Agreed on all counts. Engine did seem surprisingly small for the size of boat, but I guess it’s been adequate for 40+ years…

I'd go for a boat like that... IF it was on the West Coast. I'm not a huge fan of the mainsheet in the cockpit, but it makes it a lot easier to single hand sail. You need more subs... I figured I'd help with that. 😁

@boatfools 8 месяцев назад
Thank you, sir! Our boat has the traveler in the cockpit, just in front of the helm, and I thought I would hate it. But as you point out it is superb for solo sailing, which I often do. The Victoria’s setup is a little different but because I love this boat so much, I know I could adapt! Thanks for the comments and support!

I am in contact with both owner and yard: the engind is a 2GM Yanmar, 13hp. Also the mast viewed in the video is not the mast for this boat. I really like the boat, it needs a huge helping of TLC... we'll see... fingers crossed!

@boatfools 7 месяцев назад
Great! Well, the yard brought us to the wrong mast. Classic. How is the actual mast? She does need some TLC but it will be worth it! Are you getting a survey done? Thanks for letting me know!
@RevMishka
@RevMishka 7 месяцев назад
Well, that’s not quite the story as told to me but in any case, I haven’t seen the mast yet. I’m not local so hopefully I can get some pictures. I am arranging for a survey but because the boat is covered and winter is upon us, the surveyor has told me it will be difficult to get a complete survey done before spring, but I’m hopeful. It was 18 degrees the night before I spoke with the yard mechanic.

@@RevMishka yep - tough time of year. We had same issue and held 10% in reserve until we completed (successfully) a sea trial when the boat was launched. Hopefully the mast is there and in good shape! Who did you speak to about a survey?

Nice boat, particularly at that price. The only thing that would make the boat better would be that it was the Morris version, but you won't find a Morris Leigh for that money. The gouge on the hull would be easy to repair structurally, but making it go away cosmetically would take some skill - I hate color matching gel coat. The engine looked a bit small for that size boat. It looked like it has a full batten main, which is good. I am not a fan of walk through heads, but that is just me.

Great video! Intriguing and definitely worth a look. Did the owner mention anything about how the gouges on the side happened? Also there was mention of wiring issues in the listing, but that didn't come up in the video (maybe I missed it). Are there electrical problems/anything to add there?

No buying before a thorough inspection of the bilge inside and the hull outside; plus the rigging. I would be very wary of a boat that appears well maintained on all its east to access spots; but is filthy in places that are difficult to reach : in this situation the rigging needs a nourough inspection. Doesn't need to be pristine new but buyer must know how much he has to put on for a new rigging. Most of the time riggings (according to insurers' data standings digging on most boats should be changed every 15 years…à.

Sadly the big downside ro this biat is its poor sailing performance in winds under about 12 knots especially if loaded up with cruising gea water and provisions., A friend had one based in the Greek Ionian Islands and most of the time it was a motor boat with a mast. Eventually he sold it at a knock gown price and bought an ex charter jeanneau 35 or 36 which was acompletely different kettle a fish and sailed brilliantly .My friend always thought he wasted 3 sailing aummers with rhe Victoria. However I am aware that the boat has fans especially among the blue water community .

Wow, I have to disagree with your friend, but I haven't sailed in Greece. I'm in the PNW of the US. I have a 1984 Victoria/Leigh 30, which I purchased in March of 1998 specifically for serious cruising as a single hander. I have found her to be quite good in light airs as well as heavier air. She will easily do 5-6 knots in 8 knots of wind, I have her outfitted and loaded for offshore cruising and live aboard as well. She is on the heavy end of moderate displacement. So considering what your friend chose to replace her with the Victoria/Leigh 30 too much of a blue water boat for him. Jeanneau are not my not my preference in boats. I live on a same dock as a Jeanneau dealer and watch them being commissioned and repaired before the new owners take possession on a regular basis. They are refered to as Ikea boats here. I will try and come back and post to this video as I some additional information to add to what the presenter said. Also I had seen a comment in which the commenter stated she had poor reserve buoyancy due to the canoe stern. I disagree, the reserve buoyancy is just fine, he was correct about a loss of storage space which can be true with any canoe stern boat. The canoe stern helps the boat balance easily. For those who have an interest in the design Sail Magazine the large format version from back in the 1970's and 1980's had compiled design reviews of various boats which had appeared in the magazine over the years. There is a review written by Bob Perry of the Leigh/Victoria 30. Turns out Bob and Chuck Paine both worked for the same design house when they were starting out in their respective careers.Chuck Paine designed a number of One ton racers in his early career. Chuck was good at combining traditional lines with performance. The Leigh/ Victoria 30 is no slug! Who ever bought this boat for $18,500 got steal of a deal!

@@MW-on1ft I sailed on my friend's boat twice for 2 weeks and can confirm the poor light weather performance. My friend tended to favour the engine when boat speed dropped below 4 knots. This sadly was a very frequent occurrence Interestingly, there have been other comments elsewhere regarding poor light weather performance re the VIC 30. Having read your comments, I am wondering whether the UK boats had a heavier lay up, which adversely their performance.
