My great grandfather... I dearly wish I could have met him... one day it will be my turn to wear the big headdress, and when it comes, I hope to make him proud
Good to see this clip again. Chief Dan George was my husband's grandmother's cousin. He was from the Squamish Nation out of Vancouver, Canada. My husband was always proud of Chief Dan George.
"Thank You for my victories and for my defeats...Thank You for my vision, and the blindness in which I saw further. You make all things and direct them in their ways - Oh Grandfather..."
I am the one that posted this video clip. My grandmother and I use to watch this movie together until she passed. We are Alabama Choctaw. This was our favorite part of the movie. When Cheif Dan George says "The only trouble with snake women is they copulate with horses, which makes them strange to me. She say's she doesn't. That's why I call her "Doesn't Like Horses". But, of course, she's lying. " Stop the stupid shit or I will take it down. Enjoy life, and laugh. I miss my Grandma.
I grew up with this movie. People never talk about it. I was deeply moved by the plight and spirit of the Natives. Civilization needs healing, and this scene heals.
It’s a beautiful scene that made me cry with sadness and then again with happiness. Little Big Man doesn’t get much airtime which is a shame and I’m not sure why. Chief Dan George was such a great soul and spokesperson for American Indians.
Chief Dan George reminds me very much of my grandfather. I like to watch films from the past as they always bring great memories back. Thanks for posting 👍🏻
I originally saw this in the theater in its first release (yikes - am I really that old??), and always remembered that scene, one of my favs. I also like when he's tarred and feathered by his own sister, and the numerous "Little Big Man, my heart soars like a hawk. Do you want to eat?" Thanks for posting this.
I was just thinking that ... the long pauses, holding on without cutting away. Gives us time to take in the meaning of the scene through the actors' expressions. But the film itself is anything but 'slow', with so many adventures and characters.
That is the way of the native side of my family. When it's your time, you challenge death to come out & fight. Every day was a good day to die. My wife is in the hospital fighting him now. I pray she wins,so I don't have to finish this life alone. I named her little dove, cause she only alights for a moment...always a smile on her face. Such a beautifull spirit should not be lost to this world.
"The only trouble with snake women is they copulate with horses, which makes them strange to me. She says she doesn't. That's why I call her 'Doesn't Like Horses'. But, of course, she's lying." hahah! this movie is too classic to be true. i love it.
Agreed. Great film from start to finish! So hard to pick a favorite scene. A sure sign that you are watching something special. I can never turn it off if / when I stumble upon it. They really don't make 'em like this anymore : ( "I'm going to die now - unless death wants to fight!" - Classic! : )
I also love the seen he does in Josy Wales.Clint Eastwood says _when I go to likein someone they aren't around long.Dan Goerge_ I notice when you go to disliking someone they aren't around long either.
Along with Atticus Finch's speech from " To Kill A Mockingbird", in court, and the closing scene from "Dances With Wolves" when Wind-In-His-Hair (Rodney A Grant) says goodbye to John Dunbar, and Ruth's death scene in "Fried Green Tomatoes"; and the Gettysburg Battleground scene from "Remember The Titans", this is on my all time best movie moments list. Chief Dan George stole this movie. Geat movie!! (Richard Mulligan as Custer was brilliant, too.)
The name "Snake-woman" is from the sign for Comanche (which is what this wife is). The reference about copulating with horses is an old Plains Indian joke because the Comanches were among the first to embrace horses and all that they could bring. The tribe was widely regarded for the level of horsemanship displayed by both men and women. Old-lodge-skins had himself a pretty serious woman for a wife. Read the book. It is a good work of historical fiction. Lots of little details on Plains life.
The accumulation of the scenes played by actors - and then woven into a story is fiction but the facts and the history they're based off of are very true. Every scene in this movie could have happened in reality throughout history in different events across north america. So- fictional story based off real life events throughout history is the real way to describe this movie
i know right?! this movie has been a go-to favorite for my family for as long as i can remember. i'd certainly say the dialogues between old lodge skins and jack are what i look forward to most of all. they are just perfection. and this theory-of- a-snake-woman moment especially never fails to amuse. so glad to hear you feel the same! i'll definitely check out the other scene. much love.
Omg,, thanks id forgotten,, I guy crap for relating to this story,, my step dad,, was all it's fake BS,, Dustin Hoffman,, haaa,, That's how or honor it's stolen,, humiliation,, I ain't wear it, no more,, alone, we look wild crazed,, what person would not be crazed and wild puked from their family,, we Arrrr crazed and driven mad
Hannibal Woodward I like what you said. The clip has given the thought of climbing the mountain I have here. Dance, Prayer and Bless those who exists here in this world.
North Douglas there is an old saying, our convictions are the mountain tops from witch we scream in our youth, and the caves in which we hide in during old age.
I dont know why this movie doesnt get more air play and cred, its really a masterpiece. Is the storyteller one of the biggest liars ever in the old west, or did he live the most amazing experiences? The story of the war and genocide against the plains indians is well documented here. Chief Dan George I believe won a best supporting oscar, or was at least nominated. "Am I still in this World? Geeez. I was afraid of that".
He looks just like my great grandmother i know I have there spirit running through my veins INDIANS don't like to give up and when the going gets tough for me I just think of them and keep it moving....
Truly a great scene from a great movie - I especially love the bit that you quoted here : ) I suspect that you're already familiar, but look up this scene when you have a minute: Little Big Man - "You Go Down There" - priceless exchange in this scene
The only problem with snake women is that they copulate with horses! which makes them strange to me. She says she doesn't but that's why I call her doesn't like horses! But of course she lying! LMAO! What a great movie!
Salvation for the Native to america's is and was already present. Approval or reconciliation with the modern civilization is not required for us to receive eternity in Heaven.
his snake-woman wife is comanche, the men and even woman are known to be very good with horses, mastering them, its more of poking fun of how close they are to their horses, they didnt actually do sexual things with their horses
Those look like real Migisi feathers. Wonder where the movie people got the staff from? It be would interesting to know the script writer for Chief Dan George's lines. Cool lines and George owned those lines. Great movie and it really shines the light on the duplicity of White people.
Chief Dan George was the only Oscar nominee? Not the movie, Dustin Hoffman, Richard Mulligan, or anyone else. What in the world? Was it too controversial for the Academy members in 1970?
