Definitely not good lol. I am a trumpet player. his intonation is pretty bad but hes also just a kid and probably way better than me considering this was 7 years ago.
We've been dumbed down to think making loud obnoxious sounds on an instrument makes you good. Basic notes, basic sounds. It doesn't matter if he's 8 and started when he was 6. Two years is a lot of time to improve on a trumpet. He still plays like he just started
Hey Dick weed, Keep in mind he doesn't have the muscles in our mouths or the diaphragm like he does ours are more developed than his are chances is that all you still play like you did when you guys started you forgot to mention he also has a somewhat decent tone, and he plays out, unlike some of you who probably hide behind the people who actually can play, i swear trumpet players have an ego the ocean couldn't fill..
hey did you know first of all, its really hard to go up in front of a croud, and its not basic, i play the trombone, and still as an eleven year old, i am not as good, and i think you should respect him, Can't you see he has leart it all by heart, and it is IN his heart, just all i ask you to do is respect others, even if you do not care for them
what's the difference on playing with a pocket trumpet vs a full size one? I've only ever played the full size trumpet. Is there a difference in difficulty? In regards to when this kid was playing a full size because that is my area of expertise, he sounds like a year 3 kid who's just picked up the trumpet and learned all of 3 songs. This song sounds suspiciously similar in difficulty to Shepherd's Hey, which sounds impressive but is really not that difficult to learn. (also playing two trumpets at the same time - what is that harmony)
listening to this, as a current 8th grader, this sucks. I know, I know, its mean and he's young, but the adults gave him too much credit. literally 7/8's of that song was a low c. that's the first note you learn the highest note was a High C or D his embouchure was literal shit, it was like brian hoyer in the 2015-2016 AFC wild card.
Lol I just started playing cuz I'm going into Gr. 6 And I could probably play that. I know all the the notes That he played and HE was playing form two years and ive been playing for not even a week. Like a lot of kids coulda probably do that and or better.
You can't exactly just say "no" to him. For the sake of peasant vision and not damaging the kid's self esteem. Sure, he sounds crap, but would you be prepared to tell him he sounds like ass in front of a land of convicts?
Making a kid clown around in that ridiculous outfit is nothing short of child abuse. Let the kid play his damn horn with dignity and earn his celebrity as the musician he is, not some damn Jon-Benet Ramsey monstrosity.
Imposed precociousness is indeed a form of child abuse. Making a child an addict to celebrity and media attention will make him an addict to other truly worst things just to get that same rush of being the center of things when the limelight is gone…and it will be gone, for the public is fickle and always hungry for the "next act".
Eh, I'm not hating on the kid. That being said, I play trumpet myself and I will testify that he is average for a kid his age with two years of experience. He isn't awful, but he wasn't nearly as good as the judges were saying he was. For him to be a "trumpet prodigy," I would expect something more along the lines of "Andante et Allegro" after 2-3 years, not the piece he played.
I mean he's cute and all but he isn't a good trumpet player. He has a long way to go. But I know he's just a kid. I have no positive response but I won't give any negative response. Tip to whoever is teaching him and his parents. Being able to play 8 instruments means less time to focus on one, its really bad. I doubt he is A good musician should know how to play 1 instrument. If you ever want to play among the pros. Unless of course you are a percussionist and such. But you know what I mean.
Multi-instrumentalism is not a bad thing if there is talent for such. There is no rule stating that playing more than one instrument means you aren't good. To play professionally, I agree, but to be an excellent, well-versed musician, I disagree.
S.M.P. Newstead Your right. Sorry that was a lot of typos. I was writing "I doubt he is ... ect." But i didn't erase all of it. Also your right, to be a good musician doesn't mean you have to know only 1 instrument I meant to type " A musician should focus on 1 instrument if you ever wanna be among the Pros." like Harry James.
What's up with the trumpet change in the middle and all the dancing, he could've played a lot better if he didnt destroy his embochure with all that crap.
I'm not telling that I could do better (Even tho I could) I'm just telling that if he was sit down playing it would've sounded a lot better, but the judges barely know what music is.
+American For Life I'm not trying to say I'm better than the kid. If the judges think that they can pass that performance up as "talent", then they clearly need to re-evaluate their jobs. Tough love.
I can't believe how many people in this comments section are hating. Jeese, this kid isn't bad at ALL. I saw nothing wrong with his performance. I mean, this kid plays better than most MIDDLE school bands. As a matter of fact, he's actually a little better than my middle schools ADVANCED band. I mean, even if he wasn't good, I still gotta give him respect. I mean, when you have a trumpet or another valved brass instrument, you have to remember to oil your valves, dry your mouthpiece, grease and empty your slides, not to hit the mouthpiece in (sometimes it gets stuck when you hit it in), never forget where your case is, and with all instruments you sometimes have to remember to practice every day and never loose your practice book. And also, like he said, he plays EIGHT instruments!! *EIGHT* !!!! I only play 2 instruments (technically I can play 4 but the other 2 I don't practice) and I'm already sometimes loosing my practice book and accidentally hitting the mouthpiece into my instrument!! I mean, I highly doubt he play all off his instruments 30 minutes a day. It's gotta be hard to play 8 instruments and sound really good at all of them (unless you've been playing for over a decade). Plus, he's probably only bad at the trumpet, yet he plays good on all his other instruments.
This is crap playing. And to all you people saying to cut him slack because he is young and plays 8 instruments wtf? Just because he can play 8 instruments doesn't mean he is good at them. The judges shouldn't have even let him get that far.
not good at trumpet at all i only heard basic notes and i wont be nice just because he is young on my first day practicing i reached those simple crappy notes
For all you people who are hating on this eight year old child you need a new set of ears because that was good some people in my band class can't play as good as this child did if you read this comment boby Harrison keep moving along and ignore the haters
+Von Steiner actually wasn't even that bad, yea he still messed up quite a bit, but it's just cause he kept dancing around, hard to keep a good embouchure when constantly moving around like that.
honestly, I get it. he's a kid, and it's nice that he's playing on this show. but it's actually really simple to play two trumpets. people who think that's cool have never seen it before. he's also extremely out of tune and keeps moving, so it ruins his air flow. as much as I hate to hate on this kid, I've seen much better people at his age, who have been playing for less time.
I'd have much rather heard him play trumpet without all the dancing and the hype that were detrimental to his embouchure, accuracy, tonal quality and fluency. Let the kid play without Hollywood showboating and he'll be very good. Keep this up and he'll eventually quit in disgust.
Ok guys I need to tell you a trumpet story. So when I was in beginning band, I first started the flute. I didn't like it. Later I tried the trumpet and was OK. Before my chair tests and real things started, I accidently dropped a mouthpiece cleaner inside my trumpet. This one: ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/319Y9qPh2oL._SY300_.jpg Except like 2 inches bigger, and the part where you hold it is much thicker. I dropped this inside, and imagine what it did to my sound. I sounded flat, I sounded bad, but I thought that it was just me. I thought that the mouthpiece cleaner didn't do anything to my sound. So, I tried. I tried. I became 3rd chair almost always in band, but I still sounded ABNORMALLY flat when I played C or higher or ABNORMALLY SHARP when I played G or less. I believed I sucked. I made it into the Symphonic band of BDJH starting off as one of the top 3 players in the section. This ended badly.I was The first 2nd chair and second 4th chair. Then TUNING was a problem. I sounded bad and was out of tune, I became 6th or 7th chair, and thought I sucked. I got embarrased a lot and soon didn't care about band for like 6 months. Then, I told my friend about the thing sutck in my trumpet. Later, he told the teacher against my will, she took it out yesterday, and now I am an amazing player. Like my friend said, it's like running with a giant backpack and then taking it off. My teacher was like omfg.. cause i couldve told her this last year and made it into the honors band and became 1st chair. Now I don't know if I should quit band or not because I ALREADY chose to quit it, but now that I realized I was an amazing player the whole time I could stay. I still feel stupid. I could have been in HONORS FUCKING BAND, but I made it into symphonic band and still was pretty good. On Monday i'm going back and I need to let al my skills free.
Literally all the comments are "well I could do this" or "I'm better" he's eight and for an eight year old that's talent. For an adult that would be terrible, but since he is a kid, that is talent. Haters are so ignorant😂👌🏻
Well, I mean he is 8. HIs parents/teacher should not have let him play both trumpets as the intonation will never be pleasing to the ears (just based on the anatomy of the trumpets). Dancing is hard enough for some people and this kid was able to regulate his breathing (that's cardio he's doing, guys) and play. Don't attack his sound quality. He probably sounds a lot better sitting down.
Lance Pate Well then you have a great talent. However, 1. I know people fourteen+ that did not sound good in six months and actually quit the trumpet. 2. This kid started when he was six. SIX! I started when I was three and, after eleven years, can currently play at a somewhat professional jazz level. 3. In six months, you should be able to play at a concert level. I doubt this kid got good in two years. This show happens over a series of months, and the time prior to that is spent preparing for the show, which can take a while. And it's not like he sounds bad (especially considering he was shaking his hips.)
+Jeheiel Smith Guess the neck did look too long to be most guitars. Keep on it, man, bass is a great theory instrument, I guarantee it will improve your soloing on every other instrument.
I have been playing trumpet for 3 years and if this kid could be on one of these shows then I could win one of these shows. I can play like 2 octaves above him with much better sound quality. Like he is good for his age and the fact he has only been playing for 2 years but come on this kid a lot of special treatment.
I think if he wasn't trying to gyrate like Elvis Presley, he wouldn't have had as many rough notes, and who on earth would dress a boy into a neon pink "fluffy" shirt like that? I wouldn't put something like that on a girl, much less a boy. He has some talent but needs refinement. It would be interesting to hear him when he's in high school if he still plays. And why does anyone play a soprano trumpet? It's cute but it looks like a toy. Not impressed.
I know he isn't that good now, but he's 8. Most of the people hating are 15 or 16. Imagine how good he could be if he practiced for another 8 years. I've been playing for 4 and a half years now and I'm getting decent. This kid could be a legend when he reaches my age.
Yall seriously need to chill. Because with Moving and playing obviously MEMORIZED music for his age? This is Pretty good. I've seen worse. I'm a trumpet player myself. So I know the struggle. Learn a scale before you judge. Please ✋
Taylor Maynard I’m an All State musician. This is nothing compared to what marching bands have kids memorize, and don’t get me started on the solo repertoire that exists out there.
Obelisk The Tormentor you put one of the mouthpiece on the side of your mouth and the and the other mouthpiece on the other side. Trust me though, it does not sound good. Like, at all.
Obelisk The Tormentor I believe he was playing a trumpet and a cornet at the same time, or at least I think that is a cornet, cornets typically have 4 valves.
Declan Bartlett Piccolo trumpets can have four valves or three rotaries. The fourth valve add a fourth so you can play lower than a three valve trumpet which is a below staff F#.
in musical schools people starts at five or six, at least those who are amed to become professionals like "the greatest entreteiners" and at the age of eight they play mush better. I played trumpet for may years, and I can say that he is bad, also he is just a joker-mockery
Lillian Bleano, if you are 8 or younger I will take your comment into consideration. If you are older than it is dismissed. I think he did a wonderful job, I too can play better than him. However I am older. He is also playing on international television. I'm sure I would not play very well if I knew millions of people would watch, try to think about that. I think he is a wonderful young trumpet player, and has miles of potential.
This performance was so lacking musically because they made him focus on his stupid dance and double instrument gimmick that just made it worse. No fancy theatrics, maybe a flashy entrance/exit but I speak from a decent amount of experience playing trumpet- nobody should be forced to parade around in that attire, shake their hips like that, and play trumpet well, it doesn't work. Marching band practices 8-12 hours daily (depending on what high school band or if it's drum corps) and manage to move and play at the same time with a specific style, having him run around the stage and dance while playing is just stupid.
Look, its very hard to play trumpet, i know because I am in band. SO stop saying he is bad and think you can do better. its not just you push a button down you have to high your lips and blow very hard. Stop making this kid like he worked for nothing with his $1500 trumpet. PS I bet you dont know what the parts of the trumpet are!
FairerOwlGaming The cost of his instrument is irrelevant. Part of the reason that the actual sound is not that good is not because the trumpet is hard to play, but because he is focusing on things like pointing, winking, and shaking his hips and shoulders before he's actually developed a good tone and accurate articulation. To play the trumpet isn't hard; to play it well is (as is the case for pretty much any instrument). Currently, this kid can do the former but not the latter, but that's ok, no-one is pretending that he's the next . "An amateur practices until they can play it right, a professional practices until they never play it wrong".
I haven't even been playing for a year and my new band teacher gave me first alto sax with all of the song's melodies. Some songs have alto sax solos. There are three other altos in my band.
