Man Severin was lucky. I had a fall involving a similar amount of tomahawking, or so I've been told. Unfortunately mine ended up having to be airlifted off the mountain to a local hospital and then helicoptered again to a bigger hospital. I was out cold for both helicopter trips, and the following 2 weeks. When I woke up from my mandatory nap I'd lost most of my memories, and had to re-learn a lot of coordination - I couldn't even walk down stairs without looking like a giant toddler for about 3-4 months. I'm mostly alright now, but I am definitely more stupid and less coordinated than I used to be. A lot of memories never returned, but you don't know what you don't know, so that's not so bad I guess. I was in the backcountry as well, and the terrain was very steep, but wasn't nearly as steep as here, so all I'm saying is that your brother was super super lucky! I'm glad, because when I saw him tomahawking my stomach did a flip! Keep safe guys.

@@vinny5638 Thanks Vinny, real nice of you to say. :) Unfortunately, whilst I am ok for the most part, I'm not really me any more, or at least not the version I was before the accident. This is why I believe Severin was super super lucky. I can still ski and snowboard, although I lost some ability a lot of muscle memory was retained, although I don't think I'll ever be able to run down stairs as quickly as I used to - I just can't make my legs move fast enough. I also lost a lot of fine motor control, so I don't enjoy gaming as much anymore because I struggle with the fine co-ordination as well as keeping track of many things at once. This is just the tip of it, there actually aren't many things I enjoy as much anymore and I struggle with depression a lot. I don't form many daily memories any more, and probably 80% of the time someone says to me "Hey man, remember when we..." I don't remember it at all. Thankfully it wasn't as bad as it could have been, the doctors said if I weren't wearing a MIPS helmet, I might not have woken up at all. Despite it being a top of the range helmet and it had no marks on it, my brain was bleeding and pressure had to be released. In the end I had a less serious version of Michael Schumacher injury (TBI), so it definitely could have been much much worse! Anyway, enough of me being depressing, that is just why I believe how lucky he was, because I know first hand how much worse it could have been!

Even though your brother took that bale I think it was pretty impressive that he hit that shit with that kind of charge. Mad respect, and all of you got a good run or two in and got to go home safe so really that was a wonderful day. Plus the snow looks like wonderful conditions. Waiting for the snow to fall here in BC, so far we are having way to warm and dry of a season. Hopefully we get some good snow soon! Thank you for the inspiration and general quality of your videos, truly art pieces. Cheers, Some unimportant guy from Canada. Ps. if you ever are in BC and want a boat ride up the coast and someone to hold a camera, I would be so keen.

Nikolai, you know not to base your entire decision from one snowpit. Obviously you're a pro and you know what you're doing. I think it's important that people understand that a snowpit that shows stability in that one area, does not mean you are going to find the same results higher in elevation or different aspect
@Nikolai_Schirmer
@Nikolai_Schirmer Год назад
Yes, you’re right of course. Good observation. That pit just confirmed our understanding of the snowpack as a whole based on our ovservations weeks prior. And yes, we continuously checked the snow as we climbed higher. As we always do

I'm happy to see the line selection being skied on this footage - it indicates someone who considers the risk assessment of what they are doing. Maybe Im not the only one noticing that there are a few moments that leave me wondering about this video / story. 1. How come somebody would ski above his level in this way to "push it" in a trrrain that is potentially fatal (slam on a rock ...) 2. Would I notive that my misjudgement almost cost me my life? 3. Why would I take the oblolete rist of ruining a ski, by sending it down a rocky face? 4. How could I get to the conclusion that this incident should be labeld " my longest fall" as if to underline my derision for a near-death? Hopfully luck will be on your side for long, you seem to need it desperatly. Henry
