Also quick note. Rabbits don't really close their eyes fully when asleep. Most rabbits when they are asleep have both eyes open. In some cases, when the rabbit is really relaxed (in a flopped position [fully stretched out and lying on its belly]) its eyes are mostly, but not fully closed.

How in the wold is it wrong? My rabbit sleeps on his back all the time, legs everywhere and happy as can be. The fact the bunny LETS them move him around is a GOOD thing. It means he's well socialized and feels safe.

If your rabbit is comfortable with you doing that then that's great, means he trusts you. Most including all of mine hate it and many many rabbits do. For many it puts them in a state where they are too sacred to move. Magicians actually used to use this as a magic trick ;)

Rabbits typically sleep/nap on their front, or side if they are relaxed. Yours must feel super safe to sleep on his back.

He's totally chillax about it, and if we turn him over he's just like "oh hey, okay then." Plenty of animals sleep on their side, but like a good belly rub or don't mind being moved about. In fact I make SURE I can do it safely and calmly with my animals, for nail care and for safety reasons. Rabbits who are scared can open up your arm. They can break a hawks wing in mid-flight grab in the wild. I don't think conditioning an animal to be calm and relaxed even if you are manipulating them is at all bad for them. Much less cruel. But then, I've seen real animal cruelty. Worked in animal care long enough to know the difference between a good bit of fun and genuine harmful behaviors.

I am just going by what vets, breeders (and magicians) have told me and by my own experience.

It's a pet. Would you say the same thing about a dog or cat? If you don't handle them, they'll be unmanageable, and then what happens if they get injured or visit the vet and they NEED to be handled for health reasons? They will panic, kick and bite, and it will be very stressful for all involved, the bunny most of all.

Qnsilta Well, kelsey is right - you shouldn't trance your rabbit. The rabbit isn't hyperactive, it's got "binkies". In other words, it is very happy. Trancing may be stresful to rabbits. What I way trying to say before is that little bunnies may be actually asleep not tranced and flipping them on their back may not affect them when they sleep. Don't test it on awake ones though.

I've had and researched rabbits for 30 years now...and this bunny is NOT terrorized or in any fear. Observe closely. The respiratory rate drops, the legs relax, and when awoken, shows ZERO signs of apprehension or fear, just beaks around and explores normally. A frightened rabbit of this age will NOT trance easily; they struggle and wake on their own and then flee. Quit taking the House Rabbit Society and other internet geniuses as The Ultimate Authority, and start listening to those of us who have handled and raised THOUSANDS of the darn things!

Concise and did not pull out the cruel card like most people here have done. However, i would question that tonic immobility in rabbits is due to them being a prey species. Almost purely due to the fact that we see the same phenomena in animals who are not prey species and in some cases apex predators.

Our vet says it's OK to lay an adult rabbit on its back, it can help to calm them while you trim their nails or give them medicine. I don't do this to our rabbit because she struggles when I try, it's the struggling and kicking that can potentially injure their backs, not just simply being on their backs.

Sally Griffin It is just fine. Just do it carefully and gently, and they will learn that being on their backs is not the end of the world :). Be patient and persistent, it's worth the investment in time and energy to do.
