What a complete treat to have as my guest on this week’s episode of LDYK the national trinket and renowned homosexual Mr Julian Clary. It’s 40 years since we first met and during half a lifetime we have collaborated on innumerable bits of camp old nonsense.
Julian has a lot to talk about - a whole raft of projects suddenly being realised after months of waiting in Covid limbo.
Julian is currently touring with Matthew Kelly in Ronald Harwood’s “The Dresser”. When we spoke he was appearing in Bath and tomorrow (28th September) he opens at the Theatre Royal Brighton. Julian thinks this theatre’s faded grandeur is perfect for a play about a grand old actor (“Sir”) and his dresser Norman touring Shakespeare in 1942.
14th November sees the premiere at London’s Unicorn Theatre of a musical version of Julian’s first children’s book, “The Bolds”, about a family of hyenas disguised as human beings in Teddington (where Julian actually grew up!) At workshops Julian found himself blubbing at the sound of his words being brought to life by actors.
Then from 4th December Julian returns to the cast of “Pantoland” at the London Palladium - this time with Donny Osmond! The show lasted only six performances last Christmas before the pandemic shut all the UK’s theatres. Enjoy an exclusive preview of some of Julian’s banter with Donny.
Julian’s fans are also eagerly anticipating the second volume of his autobiography, published by Quercus on 14th October. Called “The Lick of Love”, the story’s not just about what Julian’s been up to since volume one (“A Young Man’s Passage”) finished on that infamous night at the British Comedy Awards. It’s also about his four dogs. The most famous was the multi-talented Fanny the Wonderdog, who was followed by Valerie, Albert and Gigi.
