To be fair, the new zookeeper didn't know you. I am not saying you're lying here but if you were a member of the public, and I was a zookeeper, I would be looking out for the welfare of the animals and everyone's safety. You don't know what members of the public may be up to; they could even startle the animal which leads to havoc or injury and then the zoo keeper may be blamed and lose his job.

@@purplebird481 ; that would be one fair statement. Another one would be both sides talking to each other and finding out if that story is true. Why? Just look at the reaction of the said elephant. Wouldn't that be worth a subject in studying elephants.?

Mom is only too glad she gave birth to a healthy active playful baby.

While I am very glad that the baby is healthy, I absolutely hate seeing him and his mom in a zoo. Compare that with the Jubalani sanctuary where the ellie go out into the bush everyday, go swimming, forage to their hearts content and come back at night to a protected area. It's a world of difference.

A little sweetie that's going to grow up into an enormous bull elephant one day, who would naturally have left his herd at around 13 or 14 yrs old, where he would either have wandered around alone or joined a bachelor herd, and walked miles every day, feeding up to 20 hours a day. The thought of this little baby spending 50+ years in an 'enclosure' is utterly heartbreaking. And no, zoos are not necessary to 'protect' species, nor to do 'research' on them. Would you like to be locked up in a room for 50+ yrs so that nothing bad ever happens to you? As for research, there are Amazing research scientists these days who work in the wild with the animals. Observing them in a natural environment makes far more sense than doing so in an unnatural environment like a zoo. We don't need zoos or marine parks anymore to 'research' wild animals.

@cosmicVox13 - Wild elephants live 60-70 years of age. Captive elephants in zoos live to about 40. Your argument has no merit.
