DAMMIT, Lowell, Dammit Late fall 1975, Hampton Roads area of VA, local radio DJs had already been hyping the impending LF release, even though you couldn't find their records in the store, finally local FM station DJs had their hands on it. Even though nothing could replace the ironic & climactic use of Don't Stop Believing, as far as I'm concerned, All That You Dream perfectly captured the family warmth at Holsten's and made this scene into what it is, regardless of the ominous lyrics foreshadowing the ending.

I’m new to the Sopranos, if you can believe it, so the perfection of that song in that environment has, and always will, be associated with Tony’s final minutes with his family-as his daughter walked in, his most prized soul on earth-and his life. Admittedly, I was disappointed when it turned to the classic Journey song, but understood, because it has been used in a prior show. I’m guessing DSB has significance in some way?
Oh, I also watched it 2 years ago for the first time! Needless to say, it's now my favorite series of all time. I was never a fan of DSB, but I feel for what it was, David Chase made a fantastic creative choice. "Don't Stop Believing" is alluding to the dangers of living the criminal life; you cannot go out and have a good time with your family without looking behind your shoulder. These people have more enemies than friends (who, in most cases, turn into enemies too), so all you have going on is "hope", no reassurance whatsoever. Also, yes I love fusion! I am a freelance music composer, so considering I do music for a living, I love all sorts of stuff.
Are you by chance in the LA area? I’m not, but have a friend who’s high in the music biz you may know of. He records for TV and movie soundtracks and transcribes literally anything, effortlessly. As for Soprano’s, I’ve been giving it lots of thought. I watch with fascination because the acting and script are sophisticated. Surprisingly so for a non-movie, yet a series allows you to luxuriate in nuances that a short 1.5-hr story won’t allow. Also, the crime life seems glamorous from afar; you don’t have to put up with dissatisfactory behavior you don’t like. It’s a reckless and even lazy lifestyle of whacking those who are in the way rather than the hard work of empathy, negotiation and careful language... that-even after sincere and hard work-sometimes yields no fruit due to the stubbornness of others. Characters are raw and honest-not like me who was trained to be civil and get along and not be confrontational, to a fault (although I’m getting better). It’s an extremely dysfunctional culture that erodes every area of your life and those around you, in the end. I find myself loving Tony and his family, but would they honestly have that warmth and family function in real life? A conscience weighed down by all those you’ve whacked and know you'll likely kill is not free to love well. These people have perverted conditions for all the “good” they extend; impure agendas; a bizarre code of ethics that ultimately destroys all it touches. Even when they give a gift, it’s basically stolen from someone who earned it, honestly, and is ultimately a bribe in some way to the receiver. Even though I know all this, I can’t stop watching! :0)
