Hi, Kailey! Luke here. The Little House books are still my daughter’s favorite books! We have visited their homestead in Independence, Kansas, which we throughly enjoyed. We are partial to Laura in the books, but Mrs. Olsen in the show. She is a hoot!😂. Thanks for sharing!
I love these books and used to re-read them every summer when I was a kid. Other than Laura, I think my favorite character was Ma because she was so reliable and calm through everything (well...almost everything). One of the most memorable scenes for me is when the locusts are eating up all the crops and Ma looks at the chickens running around eating the locusts...and she tells the girls they won't have to buy as much chicken feed and "there's no great loss without some small gain." I've used that hopeful, optimistic saying throughout my life because of Ma.
I love it 🥰 especially Little House 🏠 On The Prairie book 📚 especially Mr. Edwards brought Mary and Laura Ingalls their Christmas 🎄 gift from Santa Claus 🎅 especially they both get their own tin cups, Christmas 🎄 candy, Heart ❤️ Cookies 🍪, warm red winter gloves, and Christmas Penny’s especially when he’s hangout with them especially when he’s brought sweet potato 🍠 for their Christmas 🎄 dinner 🥘. I have only read Little House in the Big Woods and also Farmer Boy. I have listened to them all on audio book, and those were wonderful with the singing and fiddle playing. Highly recommend! My favorite one is Farmer Boy. I love all the descriptions of farm life.
These will always be a classic. YOu take something away each time you read it and I glean more from the side characters. The Three Faces of Nellie Oleson was insightful to learn more about the Oleson family.
YAY, MR. EDWARDS! I loved him. I wish I had the $ to buy the whole set in hardcover. (Before they are no longer available or are altered, à la, "1984", for "modern audiences.") I adore both the books and the TV show. They both shaped my childhood and life. I don't think I ever got to see how the show ended! (I don't want to know.) I had actually never read the later books. A year or two ago I discovered the channel, Reading With Beverley Volfie. I don't usually even like audiobooks, but she was delightful! And, yes, the later ones were sad and not the same. I admit that caught me off guard. I knew very little of the background until I listened to that. My favorite character would have to be Pa. He's a bit different in the books and the show. But I love both versions. I love how he is so musical, and how he takes care of his family. Though with my most recent experience, as an older adult, I realize now that he was such an adventurer and often dragged his family along in situations that weren't the best. I'm guessing the real man was not quite as charming and wonderful as the fictional one. But that's usually how it goes.
I love the whole series! I've been to the homestead and museum in Missouri and this summer we're going to DeSmet and will see the Ingalls home (and museum I think?) there. I'm so excited! They had Pa's fiddle at the museum in Missouri and that was amazing.
The first time I read a Little House book was for a children’s literature course in college. It was Little House in the Big Woods. A few years later I bought the entire set, and I still have that set from the 1970’s. I reread that set a few times during the 1980’s. The pages are turning yellow with age, but the set is still in good condition. Sometime I will reread it. :)
