Yes. They purr when excited,annoyed and domination. Just different type. On this case he was getting a female attention since the girls were around. They also make bubbly sounds.
They don't need a giant cage as long as they have a large play area to run around in daily. I let mine run around in their playpen w/ hay and huts during the day, and at night they return to their cage.
