Clete Johnson, senior fellow at CSIS and partner at WBK, joined Carolyn Brandon and Jennifer Fritzsche for the July installment of Little Nuggets of Tech and Telecom. They discussed the demand for more full-powered, licensed spectrum for 5G, the national security threat if the U.S. allows its 5G high speed mobile infrastructure to falter, and the importance of the defense industry working collaboratively with the commercial mobile industry to improve the ability for co-existence in occupied bands.
Key takeaways:
Spectrum is not a zero-sum game. U.S. spectrum policy must accommodate military spectrum needs as well as the needs of commercial, high speed mobile networks.
The United States is well behind China and other countries when it comes to making mid-band spectrum available for 5G and 6G. This presents a potential security threat to the U.S.
5G represents the always connected reality innovators have been predicting for years, making 5G and future iterations of commercial, mobile broadband a key part of expanding America’s innovation economy.
Losing out to China as the world’s most powerful and effective innovation economy poses an existential threat to America’s continued role as a global economic and military leader.
Congress must restore FCC auction authority.
For more information, take a look at CSIS’s two new recent reports; “Spectrum Allocation for a Contest with China.” & “The National Security Benefits of Reallocating Federal Spectrum for 5G.”
