Tawharanui Regional Park is an open sanctuary set on Tawharanui Peninsula. Home to rare endemic New Zealand birds, it's free to visit and it's a stunning, remote location up north of Auckland. Beautiful white sand beaches lined with Pohutukawa trees, rolling farmland filled with grazing sheep, great native forests too - it's truly a nature lover's paradise.
There are a number of different walks and tracks, we did the ecology trail which takes roughly 1.5 hours but we spent a fair bit longer trying to spot as many rare birds as we could.

There's no shops or bins at Tawharanui, so be sure to take any rubbish away with you. The closest towns to get some food and supplies are Warkworth and Matakana.
Our tasty fish and chip takeaways were from Seafood 'N' Eat It in Warkworth. Reasonably priced and conveniently a short walk from the riverside.
