For those who are interested in learning more about Little Walter, including the answers to some of the questions posted in the comments section for this video, and how the real Little Walter was different from the character portrayed in "Cadillac Records", read the award-winning biography of Little Walter, "Blues With A Feeling - The Little Walter Story". The book won the award for "Best Research in Recorded Blues and Gospel Music" from The Association for Recorded Sound Collections, and was inducted into Blues Hall of Fame as a "Classic of Blues Literature" in 2007. The book is available at Amazon.com and most major book sellers.

I own quite a few blues albums but one I never get tired of is The Best of Little Walter. He had that "something" other artists strive to achieve. His voice, his harmonica, and his songwriting are among the best of any blues artist. Playing through an amp created a whole new sound that still sounds fresh to this day. That's how I like my blues, raw and fresh. That's Little Walter!

Only one harmonica player in my opinion could touch Little Walter, that is Big Walter Horton. All due respect to Sonny Boy II ... but the two Walter's were in a league of harp all their own.

He could make a harmonica almost sound like a saxophone - what power!! And yet, a very smooth, if not polished, great voice. He really could sing, too. Another one that so many owe so much to. Way out cool to see the color footage of him and the Howlin'Wolf together!!! And all those warm appreative words from great musicians like Junior Wells... really moving.

The harmonica lends itself to being one of those instruments where it is tempting to show off or play really fast. Not Little Walter, it was always about the music and man could that guy SWING! On his uptempo stuff he always had that "bounce" that I don;t think I have ever heard from anyone else. And believe it or not, I also loved his singing too.

Hello again checker 764 I'm sure you're right but I will check my cassette copy of the interview sometime. I don't have the Living Blues mag anymore. I treasured it for years then discarded it in a fit of self-deprivation! All this stuff is interesting but I'm not sure it really matters. Walter had lots of different sounds, different amps, different mics. If you're a listener, just enjoy it and if you play harp, find your own sound! That's why Paul Butterfield used a Shure vocal mic.

@harrymills2770
@harrymills2770 3 года назад
@@ChefClary60 Yup. Knife fights. He was a hound dog when it came to the ladies, and they were always in heat when he was around. According to at least one guy who rolled with him, he definitely had a way with women, which would explain why he got into so many scrapes. He didn't die IN a bar fight. He died hours later, because he didn't get treatment for his injuries, if I remember the story, correctly. That was the really sad part. He'd've lived longer if he'd've had medical treatment. But it sounds like he got the worst of it in a brawl, and - probably not unusual for us harp players - made his way someplace lonely to lick his wounds, like he had a million times before, and didn't realize he was dying. His story sort of reminds me of Jaco Pastorius, but I see Jaco as someone who lost his way, and Little Walter as someone who fought his way up. He picked up the harp because he had the blues. He didn't pick up the blues because he played harp.

Hi checker764 and everyone else: The Walter & Louis Myers interview which was published in Living Blues quoted Walter as saying that he played through a National P.A. system using two separate channels wth two 'biscuit' mics taped together, in order to maximise the depth of tone. I haven't read all of the comments here but in case it hasn't been said: how come it's taken so long for Walter to be inducted into the Hall of Fame? Best wishes from a (U.K.) Walter fan since 1964

You may be right about Louis using the wrong word and Walter just going along rather than correcting him. There are only a few photos of Walter's gigs from the '50s, and he's definitely using a JT-30 "bullet" in all of them. But I've listened to the tape, and Louis definitely says "biscuit" in the interview. BTW, I've had several of the Astatic "biscuit" mikes, and I don't think they're horrible at all. I like the way they feel, and the original elements sound great to me.

Walter's also a great singer, (John Lee Hooker's favorite), & fine guitarist, (on some Muddy records). (Agreed: EC's overated, but it's never a shame how we learn about original artists. Many young fans discovered Freddy King & Otis Rush via EC records. His note-for-note Albert King / "Cross Cut Saw" solo on Cream's "Strange Brew", once angering me as a rip-off, I now believe was a tribute, & also the single most important factor in Albert's successful introduction to the general public.)
@harrymills2770
@harrymills2770 3 года назад
IMHO, Clapton was more OK with a (near) note-for-note masterpiece than a harp player just doing his own thing. I'm nowhere close to the same class as any of those cats, but one of my best solos, ever, was one I worked out for Crosscut. Usually, I just kinda flail away like the failed trumpet player that I am. I'm basically playing in the easiest key for trumpet (C) in my head, regardless of what harp I'm playing. The minor 3rd is "Eb" the flat 4th, flat 5th and 5th are F, Gb/F#, G and the flat 7 is Bb. Executing the bends is a little different, depending on what key you're in*, but I can always "think" in C, even though you're grabbing the A harp to play cross harp in E, for the guitars. *It's hard to bend the 1- and the 2-hole with anything lower than an 'A' harp. But you can bend the 3- and 4-holes easier for the flat 3rd and 5th. You can also bend the tippy-top of the harp easier on the blows (all other bends mentioned are draws), like that signature bend at the top of the run by Magic Dick in "Whammer Jammer." It's basically Little Walter's "Juke" lick, only way at the top of the harp, and that bend at the top is on the blow. Up high, you get an extra passing note on the run that Little Walter does (by magic) down low. But I'm re-thinking my Little Walter, trying to sort out just when he's on a chromatic and when he's on a diatonic. I can almost cop what Little Walter's doing on my diatonic, but it involves a perfect bend on the 3 hole on the way up, getting 2 notes - rapid fire - out of one hole. I think he played cross harp on a chromatic a lot more than I ever understood.
@lazur1
@lazur1 3 года назад
