Very impressive Gyro unit from a large ship, the gyrosphere is located inside a large water and real liquid Mercury container, inside the sphere i found two gyro units, motors are AC 3 phase using a capacitor 0.33uF to make them work at one phase, no idea about frequency or voltage or current or RPM, Anyone know ?
I think the Gyrosphere inside this unit is called :
Sperry Marine Navigat X MK1 Gyrosphere (Mercury)
My other Gyro video, Ferranti Horizon Plane Gyroscope avionics

I use auto generated subs, i am sorry there are a few spelling errors,
maybe one day they can do it better..

(Thanks to all my Sponsors / Traders / Swappers / Sellers / Buyers, without your support and constant flow of cool items in/out, none of this would be possible)

Interesting stuff, and in our times a bit worrying that the mercury was not stated on the chassis ;-)

I think there is an outer case for this, I just only got what we see in this video, that should have some sort of Contain Mercury sticker, but that can be painted over, the ship maintenance book should have the info and the people who recycle ship parts will also know about this. The dude who gave this one to me, did not say the word Mercury only something about contains water or other unknown fluid, so be care full about that, is how i recall it :-)

This gyro sphere was originally designed by the Anschutz company in the early 1900's. The company is still in business. I listed their site but I believe it was blocked. There is even a patent on this device. BTW the original version was a sphere about twice the diameter of the version you show.

it is a youtube thing, links are not allowed in comments, but you can put search words that will create a perfect hit, or you can remove some of the things that makes a link, we users will know what to add, to make it a use full link again :-)

Heat, you did not have to destroy dang the thing. Heat to open, geez

I think you are right, but the special pointy screw in the bearing end was also glued in, so no way to unscrew it, I had to drill that one out too, it could have saved me a few drops of blood :-) heating epoxy all the way and pulling and wriggle it, to get it loose, sounds also like a bad idea, hot epoxy fumes not good either.

Looks like 115VAC 400Hz will run it. Housing normally is filled with alcohol, ethanol denatured with some oil and a bittering agent, so that it provides damping, and the miscible oil provides lubrication to the bearing surfaces, but likely somebody replaced it with water during service.

demineralized water most likely, and they lost the mercury somehow. if it is really 115V 400Hz both my motors have the same defect, since they spin so slow, I wanted to see much more action in the high rpm, anyone know if the sphere with the motors contain some sort of gas type ? pressure ? or vacuum ? when i opened mine i got a really weird smell from it..

@@TeardownOZ2CPU Then if 115VAC is not working try 200VAC, the smell is from being sealed, and the hot varnish compounds, mixed with the off gas from the epoxy, being blended with boiled off light lubricant. Likely those bearings inside are also well worn, which is common on high hour units. Gas fill as there is no valve for purge, it would have been at best flushed with dry nitrogen before sealing, nothing more.

@@SeanBZA thanks, i am maybe a little bit over sceptic when it comes to unknown smells specially when it was chemical sort.. something just did not feel right when appling AC power, turning the volume up did not have the wanted effect, so i expect the frequency is way off, i also tried to vary the freq to aim for more speed, maybe that could tell me if i go in the right direction, no luck so far, who can we ask for motor spec ? why is the a keept secret ?

@@TeardownOZ2CPU These derived from military avionics, so the 400 or 440Hz is a common thing, and them running badly probably comes from the internal bearings being very badly worn, as they are run dry, with perhaps a dust of graphite or molybdenum sulphide powder there, or even ceramic balls on steel races and shaft.

@@SeanBZA if i push the rotor gently round, it keeps spinning for a long time, so i feel the bearings are not to blame for my lack of speed, i must be delivering the wrong type of energy.. and that confuses me.. how hard can it be :-) i will keep this and bring it back to the lab, the day i get more info on the motors..
