"CHARLES FLANAGAN " Super Edgy Sports Light.
Imagine if an award winning commercial photographer took 16 of his most famous images and sat down with you to teach you the techniques, tell you the story, and share exactly how he lit up those images? THAT is precisely what Joel Grimes is going to do for you.
Today Joel brings in former Chicago Bear and current UFC fighter James Townsend and shows us how using modifiers and light positioning to create a super edgy sport light.

I love the way Joel Grimes always shows how he builds a shot, and although he has the idea in his head and what direction he want to go in he shows the shots that weren't perfect. That way we learn the all process rather that walking up to a camera taking the perfect shot from the start. Thank you, learn a lot here.

I find it very interesting that Mr.Grimes does not change his camera settings at all during the shoot. He changes the position and power output of the light only. So cool to see this.

The RaRa85 you shouldn’t need to change your camera settings in studio conditions

Joel said, "it'll increase the power, so I have to account for that." And I think you misheard the "hire" part -- Joel talked about *himself* being hired to shoot high-level athletes. That said, hiring models (whether for money or TFP) is a good way of both building your portfolio and ensuring that you can use your shots commercially -- paying clients (or family/friends) aren't always keen on signing model releases.

how did you get the end photo with background is that pre backdrop or did you take the pic yourself for this type of thing? great info by the way.

I have the same lighting setup, can't say enough good things about the Einstein Strobes especially for action stuff... surprised though that he didn't get/use the PCB Commander to adjust his lights. I find it makes the flow of the shoot better if I can adjust the power of all my lights from the camera rather then having to walk to the lights. Either way very interesting video. I always enjoy seeing how other photographers work and think.

You have a white backdrop but it looks gray...how can we do this but get a super white backdrop? Put a light on it? Are you using a pocketwizard or what remote trigger? THANKS SO MUCH!

I love your work Joel. ? Why not go with remote power solutions like PocketWizards with an AC3 to control ur zones / power ratios in manual ? I have always found it a time saver vs going to and from my lights to adjust power, and since I'm not very tall. I'm always having to bring the lights down to adjust power settings.

Wow tripod bracket. When I saw you move from portrait to landscape in 3 seconds I was like AMAZING. Is that an L bracket with 2 tripod plates?

It's a known physical issue with male African Americans that bulk up. Lots of pro weight lifters get implants to over come this issue. It's very hard for them to beef up the calf
