Dolly is still an attractive lady at 76 years young and it causes many to forget how really gorgeous she was when she was younger, in addition to being a great vocalist, musician, and song writer.

Stunning fact: Dolly wrote Jolene and I will always love you in the same night!

She was paid 40 million for a season on the network Television. I did not appreciate what an opportunity it was to experience her music at the time.

Years ago I lived in Nashville, and at the time, was dating an audiologist. She had to give Dolly a hearing test, and said Dolly was exactly the same in person, just a wonderful, sweet person. Others stars that she tested could be a real pain, but Dolly is a very special person. She is also very, very smart, as well as a great singer, entertainer, and song-writer.

For me, that talking-singing technique comes from a storytelling place. (It's interesting that you referenced Sinatra, as I've always considered him to be a musical storyteller too). It's like Dolly inhabits the character in the song for those three minutes, and uses whatever tools she needs to tell that person's story. (Sometimes -- as in the case of a song like "Me and Little Andy" --- she actually creates a specific voice that the character might have.). Here the song represents a conversation between the narrator and Jolene, and she's thus performing it in a conversational style, and it seems -- to me at least -- almost like she does this without even thinking about it. I really enjoyed your analysis, Fil.

Linda Ronstadt was one of the most gifted singers of her time, and she wanted to sing with Dolly along with Emmylou Harris. When such a talented duo asked Dolly to join them, that shows their respect. What a collaboration. Love your use of the software. Not a gimmick, a tool.

Thanks for the great analysis. Dolly Parton is one of the biggest country stars & is a great singer-songwriter & actress. She has been recording since the 60's & has composed over 3,000 songs including "I Will Always Love You", "Coat Of Many Colors", "9 to 5" etc. She has done numerous duets with Porter Wagoner, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson & many others. She also performed as a "Trio" with Emmylou Harris & Linda Ronstadt & released a few albums with them. She has a huge library of songs.

I've always thought Dolly's singing is the way it is because she sings songs she's written herself based on her life. She's a gifted storyteller both when being interviewed or in the songs she writes so she often has passages when she "talks" rather than sings. She has a very unique voice, easy to listen to. On a side note.....why would a man give any other woman a second look if he's married to Dolly? Beauty, brains, kind and generous...yet Jolene got his full attention.

I have been a lifelong fan of Dolly and got to see her 2 times live, she was amazing playing guitar , Banjo , several other instruments. She was so beautiful almost looked unreal, when she was telling her story about her coat of many colors. She is one of a kind, I love her voice and she hits alot of high notes. I'm not a big country music fan, but I have always loved Dolly's voice. I make an exception to listen to her.

I remember Dolly as a regular on The Porter Wagoner Show when I was a kid. My dad was legally blind but he could see a little. I still remember Dad kneeling on all fours with his face about six inches from the tv screen whenever Dolly came on, checking out her great pair of...lungs. He also loved Charo and Zsa Zsa Gabor. Mom was not amused.

I used to drive by her parents house in TN on my way to work, always loved her music, she's really a kind person she gives every kid who graduates Sevier county's high-school $600.00 toward college.

If you want to see a HUGE difference in a singer's talking voice and his singing voice, you should check out Jim Nabors (Gomer Pile). His speaking voice is a high-pitched, sort of dorky voice and then when he sings it's so low and so deep that it's as though it's the voice of a totally different person. I'm trying to think of a country artist with a great difference between a singing and talking voice and right off the bat, I can't think of any. Maybe that's why I like country music so much. Most of the time the singer is absolutely singing with his talking voice. They're usually telling a story so that makes total sense to me.

Dolly is such a prolific songwriter/storyteller. Her song "Coat Of Many Colors" became a movie a few years back, of which she was an executive producer. Her songs (and the movie) really tug at your heartstrings. 💙

Years ago, someone uploaded a video called Jolene at 33 RPM. I just checked to see if it is still up and it now has over 11 million views. It was Russell Crowe who publicised it on his Twitter a couple of years ago when it only had a few thousand views. Then a newspaper article writing about Russell Crowe's tweet, drew my attention to it. It is really worth a listen, to hear how the slow speed changed Dolly's voice. It sounds incredible. Dolly should officially release it in 33 RPM. It would be a big hit.

The story I've heard her tell about how this song came to be is that she was signing autographs, and and a beautiful little girl with red hair named 'Jolene' came up. She said she told her her name was beautiful, and that she would one day write a song using her name! This is the first time I've heard THIS story behind the song.

I've always much preferred Dolly's version of "I Will Always Love You" well over the later version sung by Whitney Houston. I don't know the terminology, but I find it much more musical, much more genuinely emotional, much more natural - and just prettier. As opposed to the Houston version, which sounds to my ear quite contrived and sort of gimmicky. I don't know if you would be willing to do a comparative analysis (which I would love to hear); but I would love to see your analysis of Dolly's "I Will Always Love You."

Such a Celtic melody from Dolly!

I saw Dolly in concert when she was singing/playing with Porter Wagoner in the 60's. I knew as a kid that she was special, and Porter had many sequins on his outfit. Wagoner was from a town in my area in SW Missouri.

Grew up listening to Dolly Parton on the Porter Wagoner show as my parents were big country music fans. Although I didn't care so much for country music, watching Dolly Parton perform and how she engaged with the audience was fantastic! Also seeing her in interviews with her honest, down to Earth personality was hypnotic.. Truly I have nothing but respect for such a talented and wonderful human being and I so enjoyed your analysis!

Amazing!! You analyze the vocals of all of my favorite singers, Fil! I fell in love with Dolly's singing during a road trip with a friend while I was still in high school during the summer of 1976. I went to see her in concert that fall...and I could not get any of my friends to go because they did not know who she was. It wasn't too long after that when she had her cross-over hit "Here You Come Again" and starred in the movie "9 to 5." Everyone heard of her after that. Since then, I have seen her at least a dozen times in concert. She is talented, compelling and genuine...the full package. I just love her. Thanks again for analyzing her voice, Fil!!

Fil, these analysis videos enhance our appreciation as listeners as we learn of the complexities that we may have previously overlooked. My suggestion for another such video would be Judy Henske's song, 'Buckeye Jim' off her 1964 album, "High Flyin' Bird." It is not only notable for Henske's dynamic emotionally ladened vibrato, but also for the 12 string guitar that accompanies her with three distinct voicings that dovetail her emotion while building to a crescendo before gradually leading us back to where we first began the journey. I would love to hear your take on this performance.

2 things: One time Dolly was asked in an interview if she felt bad that most people think I Will Always Love You is Whitney's song and not hers, she replied, "Are you kidding? Do you know how much money that woman's made me?" lol Miley Cyrus is her goddaughter and was on The Voice (?) and made some offhand, nasty comment about Jolene on one episode, the very next episode Miley was up singing Jolene, you just know Dolly was involved in that.

Fil, thank you for another excellent analysis of an American master. I’ve heard her tell the story of the origin of this song a number of times. The way she tells it, she confronts this woman and tells her in no uncertain terms to keep her hands off her man (which sounds just like the approach a strong woman like Dolly would take in this circumstance). What I find interesting here is, in contrast, she decided to have the woman in the story BEGGING Jolene to leave her man alone. This leaves me wondering why Dolly chose to go this way instead of having the woman in the song confront Jolene the way she did in real life. Why? My guess is she felt there was more drama in having the song’s character feel she just doesn’t have the beauty or sex appeal to compete. It creates tension in the story; a tension that remains unresolved even at the story’s end because we never find out what Jolene chose to do. This is just my guess, so I’d be interested in getting other viewers’ opinions
