That sounds more dangerous than just skating. Skating confidently, calmly, and quickly would be better (you'd get across the ice faster). Failing that, a starfish position would distribute your weight across a greater surface area of ice, therefore reducing the chance it'll break.

re: if you lose 3 fingers you need an anecdote - i lost the tips of 3... and he's right. when people ask, my story is "lost em noodling catfish in the bayou" because no one wants to hear the true version. its graphic and "too real"
